More mixed fortunes for the bowls
Posted in Bowls, Sport on Friday July 16, 2010| Leave a Comment »
PARWICH BOWLS CLUB – Week commencing 12 July 2010.
Mixed fortunes again this week. One win one loss.
Tuesday League – Away – Hathersage.
On occasions you have to confess that playing bowls when it is heaving it down with rain and blowing a gale is not necessarily the best pastime. This was such an occasion. It was not pleasant!!
We had lost to Hathersage at home earlier in the season and we were not looking forward to the reverse fixture. We should not have worried. We won by 80 to 62, which was, all bar one point, the exact opposite of the loss we suffered at home.
Next match – Home – Whitwirth Park – 20 July – 6.30
Thursday League – Home – Lafarge Cement Hope.
Even though we lost we gave a reasonable account of ourselves. Lafarge are a lot higher in the league than us and a much bigger club.
We won one out of the three doubles games and shared the singles three games each. However the games Lafarge won were won by a greater margin and the final score was 112 to 131.
Next match –Away – Matlock Park – 22 July. 1.30 ish.
You are still allowed to come along to the green. It is better than going to the dentist! And it does not cost a thing.
We are having a club tournament on Sunday called a ‘Square Robin’ come and have a look. We will be on the green at around 10.30 am.

PARWICH BOWLS CLUB – Week commencing 5 July 2010.
Mixed fortunes this week. One win and one loss, although we did play well in both games.
Tuesday League – Home – Chatsworth.
We managed to win two of the games, but lost two as well. Our points tally however was just a bit better than the opposition. The final result was 69 to 52.
It is ironic that last week in this league we had our lowest score, but still went up a place in the table! The teams around us had even poorer scores than we did.
Let’s see how we fair this week.
Next match – Away – Hathersage – 13 July – 6.30
Thursday League – Away – Bakewell.
This is a really strange green. Very long and thin. In Crown Green bowls you can send your ‘woods’ in any direction. Up and down or corner to corner, the choice is yours. At Bakewell however because the green is so narrow it is almost like playing ‘Flatgreen’ bowls, you have to play up and down.
Anyway, suffice it to say we were beaten quite comprehensively. We won one out of three in the doubles and two out of six in the singles, making the total score 137 to Bakewell and 111 to us. It could have been worse!
Next match –Home – Lafarge Hope works – 15 July. 1.30 ish.

Panoramic Five 2010

Organiser Graham Johnson has sent us the following:
Following the success and acclaim in local running circles of last year’s inaugural event, we are again organising the Parwich Panoramic Five running evening on Tuesday 3rd August 2010. The format will be exactly as last year with 3 junior races starting at 6:30pm and the senior 5.3 mile event taking place at 7:15pm. As those of you who helped out last year are aware, the course requires a large number of marshalls and first aid help.
We are hoping that the excellent team who did such a great job to make last year’s event such a great evening will again pitch in. If you helped out last year (either marshalling or first aid) and are not available on that evening, please can you let me know (Graham Johnson on 344).
Let’s hope for kinder weather this year and a big entry.

Week commencing 28 June 2010.
Two wins last week, two losses this. Expectations certainly not rising!
Tuesday League – Away – Matlock Golf Club.
Having beaten the top of the league team last week, we came down to earth with a bang this week, losing to the team second bottom. This was our lowest score this season. In truth we did not deserve to lose so heavily.
As it was we only won one game out of four and lost 66 to 48. Some consolation that we managed to restrict the winners to a fairly low score.
Certainly after this we will be very fortunate to remain in our fifth from bottom position in the league.
Next match – Home – Chatsworth – 6 July – 6.30
Thursday League – Home – Chatsworth.
Chatsworth are a few places higher in the league than we are and today’s result unfortunately showed why.
Although we won the doubles games 3 to 2 their aggregate score was greater than ours. We shared the singles games 3 games all and our aggregate scores were equal.
The overall score finished up at 120 to 125. 120 is not a bad score considering we lost, so hopefully we will stay mid table.
Next match – Away – Bakewell – 8 July. 1.30 ish.

Sunday afternoon’s fun and games!
Posted in 2010, Posts of Note, Sport, Wakes on Monday June 28, 2010| Leave a Comment »
Tension mounted on Sunday afternoon, as two teams warmed up, ready to face each other for the duel of the year. Much training had been undertaken, which was obvious when you saw the teams in action: peak fitness and grim determination. The atmosphere was electric, play was fair and the promise each person showed in training was realised: an outstanding performance. They lasted the course; no fouling, ‘well none that the referee saw’; and the result was just. Parwich lost the volleyball to the Campers but won the tug of war. Heads can be held high, pride is maintained – keep those flags flying.

Week commencing 21 June 2010.
Two wins this week. One very good one win and one not so good, if you can call a win not bad. Are our expectations rising?
Tuesday League – Home – Buxton Park.
You who follow these riveting bowls reports will be aware that we played Buxton last week and got soundly beaten. The start of the second half of the season meant that they came to us. We managed to reverse the position and won 80 to 74. At Buxton we were beaten 81 to 59 so although we did not recoup all of our loss we got close. We dropped one place in the league following last weeks match, let us hope we can move back up again.
Next match – Away – Matlock Golf Club – 29 June – 6.30
Thursday League – Away – Wirksworth.
This is a very large green probably the biggest in the league and it is very demanding. We won the doubles games 2 to 1, and shared the six singles games three each. Although we won overall 110 to 102 our points tally could have done to have been better.
Next match – Home – Chatsworths – 1 July. 1.30 ish.

Week commencing 14 June 2010.
Oh dear. Two away matches, two defeats. At least the sun was shining both days!
Tuesday League – Away – Buxton Park.
As mentioned last week it was just as well we had had a good win. Buxton are top of our league and their green is very ‘tricky’ indeed. Last week we won and our opponents got 59 points. This week the scores were reversed. We lost 59 to 81. The score was not as bad as we had anticipated though. We are half way through the season (can’t believe it) so the fixtures are reversed. Let us hope we can get a few points back at home next week.
Next match – Home – Buxton Park B – 22 June 6.30
Thursday League – Away – Tideswell.
Again this is a really lovely venue and although we lost it was a gorgeous sunny day. We lost the doubles games 2 to 1, but won the singles 4 to 2. This gave a aggregate score of 132 to 121. At the start of play we were fifth in the league so hopefully with this reasonable away score we will stay in that position. All will be revealed in the fullness of time.
Next match – Away – Wirksworth – 24 June. 1.30 ish.
The friendly against Ellastone was marred by the rain, but the food was great! No matches this weekend as it is all hands to the pump for ‘Open Gardens’. It’s still not too late for baking scones for the cream teas!

Best win of the Season
Posted in Bowls, Sport on Friday June 11, 2010| Leave a Comment »
PARWICH BOWLS CLUB – Week commencing 7 June 2010.
We came so close to winning both of our matches this week. However, we did have the best result in one league.
Tuesday League – Home – Bakewell.
- Our best win of the year so far. Everybody played really well and following on from last week we missed getting a maximum score by one point.
- We won by 83 to 59.
Hopefully when the league results for all teams are in we may move up a place in the league. Our next match is against the team who are top of the league, so perhaps it’s just as well we have had a couple of good wins.
Next match – Away – Buxton Park B – 15 June 6.30
Thursday League – Home – Matlock Golf Club.
- We only have 14 regular players and today we managed to put out a team where 12 people all played a game. This meant that 6 people played in the doubles and 6 in the singles.
- It was a very close match indeed and we lost by the closest of margins 118 to 119.
- The Golf Club were one point behind us in the league and although our points totals will now be the same they have a better points ‘against’ tally so they will overtake us in the league.
Next match – Away – Tideswell – 17 June. 1.30 ish.
We are all going to have a friendly game at Ellastone Bowls Club on Sunday. These matches are really enjoyable, and the tea provided is usually very tasty!

Mixed Fortunes in Bowls matches

PARWICH BOWLS CLUB – Week commencing 31 May 2010.
Two away matches this week, which resulted in mixed fortunes for us. One win and one loss. The venues however were really good.
Tuesday League – Away – to Whitworth Park A.
The Council have improved Whitworth Park greatly and the timber sculptures are very well done.
Our best win this year in the ‘Tuesday league’, we only dropped 5 points from the maximum 84.
We won three games to one, which gave us a match score of 79 to 62. Although we got the most points in a match so far this year we still remain close to the bottom.
Next match – Home – Bakewell – 8 June 6.30
Thursday League – Away – Hathersage A.
Because of illness and holiday commitments we were very short of players this week. Even though we lost the afternoon was exceptional. The green overlooks the swimming pool and the vista of the hills beyond was gorgeous.
The result, however, was not. We could only muster 104 points to 139.
Next match – Home – Matlock Golf Club – 10 June. 1.30 ish.

PARWICH BOWLS CLUB
Week commencing 24 May 2010.
Is it tempting providence to say we are back to winning ways? – probably!. Anyway we won both our matches, even though we only had the bare minimum of players.
Tuesday League – Home – to Ashwood Park B.
Ashwood are a very good team and are a lot higher in the league than us. We won three games to their one giving us a match result of 76 to 53.
We were fourth from bottom of the league and even after this really good score still remain in that position.
Next match – Away- Whitworth Park A – 1 June 6.30
Thursday League – Home – Whitworth Park A.
Excellent game all round, everybody played really well.
Although we lost the doubles games 2 to 1 the scores were close 52 to us and 54 to the opposition. However, the singles again ‘did it for us’. We won five games to one.
The overall score was 135 to 102.
Let’s hope we can do as well in our next match.
Next match – Away – Hatherage A – 3 June. 1.30 ish.
It’s a Bank Holiday weekend and because of people on holiday the Monday night session will probably not take place,

Anyone interested in getting involved with the club do come along to the Club Evening on Mondays at Parson’s Croft:
Parwich Bowls Club – Week commencing 17 May 2010.
Not a very good week for us. No wins, but we did not lose one of the matches either.
Tuesday League – Away – to Bradwell B.
It is really nice to play at Bradwell. The venue is lovely.
We managed to win two games and so of course did Bradwell. Neither of us lost indeed the result was a draw – 61 points each. Quite unusual in crown green bowls.
We were fourth from bottom of the league and still remain in that position, although the teams below us are getting closer!
Next match – Home- Ashwood Park B – 25 May. 6.30
Thursday League – Away – Chatsworth B.
Not so good this match. We lost the match 119 to 102.
Because of other results we have dropped from fourth to fifth place in the league.
Next match – Home – Whitworth Park A – 27 May. 1.30 ish.
We are entering the holiday season for Club Members and it is often very tight as to whether we can get a team together. Keep your fingers crossed.
We will be down on the green around 6.30 ish on Monday night.

Week commencing 10 May 2010.
After the euphoria of last weeks ‘double victories’, mixed fortunes this week. We had a win and loss.
Tuesday League – Away – to Baslow. Baslow are a good team and are considerably higher in the League than we are. We did however win one game, but lost the other three. The overall match result was 69 to 56 to Baslow.
We were fourth from bottom of the league and still remain in that position.
Next match – Away- Bradwell B – 18 May. 6.30
Thursday League – Home- Baslow B
A similar story to last week. We did not do very well in the Doubles games, losing two games to one. However we again had a great turnaround in the Singles games winning four games to two. The result was therefore a really good win by 120 to 112. With any luck we will stay fourth from top of the League.
Next match – Away – Chatsworth B – 20 May. 1.30 ish.
It was really good to see someone on holiday in the Village use the green. Although a ‘flat green’ bowler he soon started to get to grips with some of our game. He was most complimentary about the facilities.
We will be down on the green around 6.30 ish on Monday night – we welcome newcomers.

A PARWICH.ORG reader mentioned that it was good to see so many village children out on their bikes.
However they expressed concern that both motorists and cyclists need to look out for each other especially at the blind bends and junctions in the village. Please take care.
Do let us know if there is any interest in the Police running a cycle safety session in the village.
Co-incidently a press release came from the Peak Park today on some free cycling events, the first being on Bike Maintenance at the Ashbourne Cycle Hire Centre this Saturday. (more…)
Bowls Club Double Win

PARWICH BOWLS CLUB – Week commencing 3 May 2010.
This week what can I say? What a team. The walking, nay, staggering wounded have done the impossible. Well we did win both our games this week, which for us is awesome! Believe it of not the opposition did actually turn up as well. Anyway being the modest sort of outfit we are the wonderfully, marvellous details are as follows.
Tuesday League – Home to Matlock Bath.
Our first win in this league. We won three games to one. The match score was 75 to 67. Not a particularly convincing result, but mighty oaks from tiny acorns grow.
We were fourth from bottom of the league. This win keeps us where we are I think. Still better than dropping down a place.
Next match – Away- Baslow 11 May. 6.30
Thursday League – Home- Matlock Park.
It looked after the doubles games we were in for a bit of a hiding. We lost two games to one. The points for the opposition were considerable whilst ours were not very good at all.
Anyway a fabulous turnaround in the singles took place and we won five out of the six games. Bearing in mind the maximum points you can get in the singles is 90 (6 X 15), we got 85 to the oppositions 46.
Combining the doubles and singles scores we won by 123 to 97.
What a result.
Next match – Home – Baslow B 13 May. 1.30 ish.
We are entertaining a team from Ellastone on Sunday in a friendly. We will be down on the green around 2.00pm. Why not come down and have a look.

Week commencing 26 April 2010.
It is not in a bowlers nature to complain! However, we are not having much luck – either on or off the green. We only have the bare minimum of players and quite a few have been, and still are, either ill or suffering from back, knee, and other orthopaedic problems. So please – if you can walk or even crawl, you would be a most welcome addition to the Club. Anyway, enough whinging and excuses; we did not do very well this week!
Tuesday League – Away to Whitworth Park.
Still no wins after four matches. We only won one game to Whitworth’s three. The resulting points tally was 72-55. That puts us about fourth from bottom. The only way is up?
Next match: Home to Matlock Park, 6th May, 6.30 ish. Please come and support us.
Thursday League – Away to Lafarge, Hope.
Although we again did not win, the ride up to Hope and Castleton is worth it. A nice lunch and then a game of bowls can’t really be bad, even if we lose.
At the time of playing the match, believe it or not, we were third in the league. Although not winning, we have had a good aggregate score. Unfortunately this week we lost all three doubles games. We redeemed ourselves a little by winning the singles games 4-2. However the total scores finished up 135-110 to Lafarge.
Next match: Home to Matlock Park, 6th May. 1.30 ish.
We are having our first internal Club competition this Sunday at 2.00 pm.
Again, although it’s a Bank Holiday, we will be on the Green on Monday at around 6.30. Everyone is most welcome.

Bowls Club: first win of the Season
Posted in Bowls, Sport on Friday April 23, 2010| Leave a Comment »
Week commencing 19 April 2010.
Mixed fortunes this week, but at least we broke our duck in terms of wins in one league.
Tuesday League – Home to Hathersage.
We have yet to win in this league and although we won two games and Hathersage won two, the points totals meant that overall we lost 62 to 81.
Perhaps we can try and console ourselves by thinking we have been playing the best teams so far! Hope springs eternal.
Next match – Away – Whitworth Park – 27 April.
Thursday League – Home to Bakewell.
Not only did we break our duck in terms of wins, but a new member played for the team for the first time. Perhaps he brought us luck. Bakewell are top of the league. Although we lost the Doubles games 2-1, we won the Singles games 5-1. Combining the points for all the games we won by 138 to 123. A great result.
Next match – Away – Lafage, Hope – 29 April.
Come and join us for a practise next Monday night 6.30pm ish.

Parwich Bowls Club – last week’s results
Posted in Bowls, Sport on Monday April 19, 2010| Leave a Comment »
Week commencing 12 April 2010
As mentioned last week both our matches were away to Chatsworth and even if we don’t play very well and lose we still enjoy some lovely venues for our games.
Anyway, although we enjoyed ourselves at Chatsworth we unfortunately lost both the matches. The Tuesday evening team won two games and lost two, but on points count back we lost the match 73 to 60. In bowls matches ‘points mean prizes’
Similarly the Thursday team narrowly lost 135 to 131. A really good effort.
Even though we have yet to win a match we are not bottom of the leagues we play in. In the Tuesday league there are 12 teams. At the moment we are fourth from bottom.
The Thursday league has the same number of teams and we are fifth from the top.
As the saying goes it’s not the winning, but the taking part that counts. If we had some more players we may be able to do even better.
Speaking of which it was really nice to see a new face on the green on Monday night. It would be even nicer if we saw some more. Don’t forget, Mondays 6.30pm for an hour or so. You’ll love it.

Parwich Crown Green Bowling Club – 2010 Season
Posted in Bowls, Sport on Friday April 9, 2010| Leave a Comment »
The first matches of the new season took place this week at Parsons Croft with not very auspicious results.
The club plays in two leagues – The Matlock and District Tuesday League and the Matlock and District Thursday Friendly League. As those of you who went to University will note we play on a Tuesday and Thursday on a home and away basis. The season for both leagues end in early September.
Tuesday league. – Matches usually start at 6.30 pm.
Home to Matlock Golf Club.
It was a very close match. Each team is made up of 8 members and 4 ‘doubles’ matches are played. First pair to 21 wins the match. Parwich won two matches and lost two matches. The overall result was a win for the Golf Club 70 points to 69.
The next match is away to Chatsworth.
Thursday league. – Start time 1.45 pm.
Home to Wirksworth.
These matches consist of three games of doubles – first to 21 and six games of singles – first to 15.
We nearly had to concede games, as the minimum number of players required is 6. We just made the required number of players.
Although we lost the match overall, considering our scarcity of numbers, we did reasonably well. We won the doubles games by 60 points to 50, but lost the singles games by 84 points to 62. Giving an overall result of a win for Wirksworth 134 points to 122.
The next match is away coincidentally to Chatsworth.
We are having practice meets down at Parsons Croft on Monday evening at 6.30 pm until 7.30 – 8.00 pm. Why not come down and have a go. We could certainly use new members and players.
