What the papers say

In today’s (25th June 2008) Ashbbourne News Telegraph are the following our readers might find of interest:

P.6 A great page feature on Sunday’s Children’s Show (even though I say it myself).  Seriously with four photos, a big thank you to the paper for including the results in full.  Everyone including the children worked really hard, so it is good to get the recognition.
P.7 The 13th World Toe Wrestling Championship is to take place at the Bentley Brook Inn on Friday (6pm to 9pm).  TV coverage and celebrities!  However make sure you are not too hung over to enjoy Wakes Saturday.
P.9 Councillor Ray Caswell is to step down from Ashbourne Town Council because of ill health.  Many will know Mr Caswell.  We would like to take this opportunity to send Mr Caswell our best wishes, and look forward to his continued excellent representation of our ward (Dovedale Ward) on the County Council.  (more…)

Thank you to Parwich & District Horticultural Society for sending us the following:

Everyone will agree that this year’s event has been a great success. The weather was a welcome improvement on last year. This year 17 gardens were open. The Horticultural Society appreciates all the hard work involved in preparing your gardens and tidying up afterwards, in addition to the time taken on the day; so a very big thank you to all who opened their gardens. Also well done Dot; the day ran smoothly, as always.  This is one of those great days in the year, like Wakes, when one is so glad to be part of such a marvelous community.  (more…)

News 34: 13 June 2008

Dear Parents,
Thank you for your generosity. School has benefited from Parwich Community’s big heart!

Your donations to ‘Bags2School’ were incredible the entrance hall was covered by collection time on Tuesday. The PTA Cake Stall was well attended despite the disappointing weather. Thanks also to two individuals who donated plants and a fax/copier to school – thanks go to Mr Whitfield at Leatherbritches Nursery and Mr Rodgers of Ashover.

Golden Table
(Not available online)

Photographs
Please ensure all photograph money is returned by Monday 23rd June.

Year 6 parents – parents have suggested purchasing the Year 6 photo on disc, please see Mrs Barker if you are interested.

New School Logo Final Reminder
All the entries are displayed in the middle classroom; they’ll be there until Monday 16th June. Everyone is invited to view the logos and choose their favourite with a discreet tally system. The winning design will be announced in assembly on Friday 20th June.

PTA Coffee Morning / Tombola Reminder
A big thank you to everyone who supported the coffee morning, where we raised £76.20.

Can you please send any items suitable for an adult or child tombola into school ready for the PTA stall during Wakes. Please leave items in the school entrance – thank you.

KS2 Spelling Bee Fundraiser / Coffee Morning
On the morning of Thursday 19th June KS2 children will be taking part in a Spelling Bee which parents will be invited to watch and support. Entry into the competition will be £1 per child. If children wish to enter they will need to pay their £1 on Monday 16th June. They will then be separated into spelling ability groups and heats will take place on Tuesday morning. The children who are successful in heats will take part in the final on Thursday. Alongside this competition we will be selling hot drinks, cakes and biscuits. We would appreciate any donations of cakes and biscuits for this event.

KS1 Sponsored Spell
The children in Mrs Black’s class will be doing a Sponsored Spell for the benefit of the school funds on Friday 20 June. The children will be bringing a sponsor form home to be returned on Friday 20 June (spelling test day). Children can be sponsored for each correct word or letter, or by donating a fixed amount.

Hockey Club

In order for children to get the best out of their after school hockey club we have decided to change the finishing time to 4.45pm. This gives us time to return to school from the playing fields. Please contact Miss Chatfield if this causes you any problems.

KS2 Trip to Chatsworth

Don’t forget to return permission slips and your voluntary contributions by Thursday 19 June. This trip has been partly funded by the Parwich Horticultural Society to whom we are extremely grateful.

Future School Visits
Rising costs of fuel mean that coach company prices have risen significantly in recent months which inevitably mean higher priced visits. School does not make a profit on any school visits and actually on our more recent trips we have made a loss, being a small school our budget is not tailored to withstand these types of deficits. In future should ‘voluntary contributions’ not cover the cost of the visit the visit will have to be cancelled.

Best wishes

Gnomes.

If you go down to the woods today you will see – gnomes – and lots of them.

Jane Harris’ garden has long been a source of attraction for gnomophiles. It has a reputation far and wide as Derbyshire’s Premier Collection of Garden Gnomes. They come in all shapes and sizes, and are known to multiply when no-one is looking.

The Collection is of particular interest to those of a whimsical and youthful nature, and visitors to the wonderful village of Parwich are often drawn to this collection.

This year Jane is extending a warm invitation to those who visit it to show their appreciation by making a donation to – hurrah, hurrah – PROJECT PARWICH.

Thanks, Jane!

The 1st Derbyshire Dales Cyberscouts held its second meeting of the year in sunshine on Saturday 3rd May, using the 6th Form Block of Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School as its Headquarters. Tim Polkinghorne, Group Scout Leader, opened the meeting with the traditional recital of the Scout Promise and then each section were off and away!

Four children from Parwich are members; two in Beavers, one in Cubs and one in Scouts.

The Cubs and Scouts section (ages 8-10 and 10-14 respectively) made a sharp exit to Wetton, complete with backpacks jammed full of lunches, compasses, maps and cold drinks! Their mission was to navigate their way to Thor’s Cave (and back!) on foot which they achieved in an impressive time and with some interesting diversions! Fortunately, they also remembered to bring John Queening, County Commissioner, back with them as well as their Leaders, whilst also teaching them a few things about orienteering with a compass!

The theme for the Beaver section meeting (ages 6-8 ) was health and fitness, with each member bringing with them a healthy packed lunch which they had helped to make … not a chocolate in sight (well, except in the Leader’s lunch box!). Also attending as an honorary member for the day was Spencer the school bear.

The Beavers were lucky to experience a kickboxing session with Sabri who runs classes in the Ashbourne area. Not only did they learn they could kick higher than they believed, the Beavers also learnt a great deal about positive attitude and respect for self and others.

After tasting lots of unusual fruits over lunch and burning off some excess energy on the grass, the Beavers were ‘subjected’ to blindfolded food tasting – the most fun part of the day according to their Leaders! Some of the foods tasted were met with very interesting reactions, especially the gooseberries and cold baked beans. Hats off to all the Beavers for getting stuck in and tasting everything put in front of them.

Beavers warming up for Kickboxing

Tim Polkinghorne and his team would like to thank Nigel’s Butchers in Dig Street for providing the Leaders’ lunches. Thanks also go to Sabri for the kickboxing experience – he is currently offering a 30 day free kickboxing trial in the Ashbourne area for adults or children and can be contacted on 07824 428843.

The next Cyberscout meeting will be held on Saturday 14th June. Cyberscouts meet nine Saturdays a year 10am – 3pm and fees for attendance are £10 per meeting. If you are interested in joining Cyberscouts either as a leader/helper, would like to reserve a place as a young person in a section or would like to sponsor the Group, please contact tim@reachnirvana.co.uk or 01335 348444. More information regarding each sections’ programme can be found at www.cyberscouts.me.uk.

Thank you to Di Turnbull for sending in this post.

What a great time we had planting up the border outside the hard play area.

Cloe, Courtney, Josh and Dan helped to put down the stone around the access paths and seating area a few months ago and were keen to help with the design and planting of this area too. And what a help they were – fantastic! We planted through the weed-suppressing membrane, adding fresh compost and fertilizer, covering the plants again with the bark chippings. Keen to learn, their enthusiasm never wavered in the three hours it took to make the area look attractive. Josh did, however, remind us of the importance of being finished by 6.20pm, for ‘Doctor Who’!

They all said that they were going to ask others to take care not to walk on the area and to keep it looking good. A sense of ownership? – I think so.

Over the last 4 days I have given you clues and even partial pictures, so can you now identify the well dressing that I helped to create?

Can you also spot this well dressing, created by the children. What is this a picture of (and I don’t mean the finger on the left handside)?

Remember the well dressings open today with the Ascension Day service and blessing of the wells at 11am.

Last term’s tote money was used by the infant class to buy toys and games to support their topics and Golden Time. Many thanks to all who participated in raising this money for the school.
