Suttons Seeds Catalogues available

SuttonsDon’t forget that members of the Parwich & District Horticultural Society can order discounted seeds and other items from the Suttons Catalogue, through the Society. The catalogue has a good range of flower and vegetable seeds, gardening equipment, onion sets, seed potatoes, small plug plants, etc.  The amount of discount varies for different items, being the most for seeds.

The Society membership (now due, so drop it off with Ben Bennett) is only £2 and you quickly make that back on even small orders.  The Society also usually gains a small commission on the collective bulk order.

Dot will drop copies off for people who ordered last year, but if you didn’t order then but want to take advantage of the discount this year contact Dot on tel 345.  You must then give your order to Dot by early January.

A tree for a small garden

pine tree

Thank you to Mani from Germany for this photo af a pine tree.  Note: this tree is around 40 years old, and has been in gardens as far apart as the Outer Hebrides and London, with its last 12 years here in Parwich.  Let’s hope it spends its next 40 years here as well.

Interest in allotments

There has been a little interest in our last two posts on the idea of allotments

Parwich & District Horticultural Society discussed the idea at their last committee meeting and offered to co-ordinate any interest and possible garden sites. The easiest option would be to try to bring together those wanting space to grew vegetables with those who had land.  This might be part of a garden that is larger than needed or a re-introduction of the idea of a ‘pingle’ (a corner of a field used to grow vegetables).  Though requiring more long term planning, if there was sufficient demand the best option would be to seek a larger plot for more formal allotments.

If you are interested in having access to land for growing vegetables in Parwich or have land suitable for this, contact parwich@hotmail.co.uk and we will pass the information on to the Horticultural Society.

Prize winning Dahlias and ChrysanthemumsIt is with great sadness that Parwich and District Horticultural Society have made the decision to not hold their annual show this year. At a committee meeting held last week there was much discussion regarding alternative venues, due to the rebuild of the Memorial Hall, and possible changing the format of the show.

However, it was decided that it would be better to `have a year off` rather than run a sub standard show.

Local vegetablesWith the new Memorial Hall due to be ready for next year’s show we hope that all exhibitors will help us to make use of the new facilities by ensuring that the Main Show in 2010 will be bigger and better than before.

Don’t forget about next week’s trip; the Hanging Basket competition currently taking entries; or the Bob Matthews Quiz that will take place on the evening of Thursday 8th October at the Sycamore Inn.

Parwich Open Gardens

The sun broke through the clouds and shone down on Parwich Open Gardens this year. Despite the closed road on the B5056,  several hundred people visited the gardens this Sunday, making the event a huge success. Thank you to everyone who entered the horticultural show and well done to those who won prizes!

Members of the Horticultural Society manned the plant sale which generated much interest amongst the visitors.

Cream teas were provided thanks to the hard work of the backroom staff and thanks to those who baked scones and helped prepare for the ‘hungry hoards’.

Visitors please note that the B5056 is closed just north of the Bentley Brook Inn, where it forks from the A515.

If you are coming from the north, then you can still access Parwich from the B5056.

If approaching from the south, you should stay on the A515 for another 4 miles or so, and then take the turning through Alsop-en-le-Dale.

Hoodlums in Parwich Garden

PEACOCKS

peacockSince Saturday my garden is being trashed and my poultry terrorised by the hoodlum antics of a pair of Peafowl. The worst part about it is that they seem to be thoroughly enjoying themselves here and are showing no signs of moving on.

Will the owner please come to claim them as soon as possible.

It’s the time of year where many of us  start thinking about summer bedding plants, baskets and containers…

Leatherbritches Nursery, owned and run by our own Bill Whitfield (affectionately known to some as “Big Bill”), is definitely worth a visit.

There is a large selection of summer bedding plants to enable you to make your own fantastic displays and for those with less time there is a range of pre-planted baskets and containers that you can put straight out in the garden. Instant effects with none of the hassle!

As well as the summer bedding plants, there are herbaceous perennials / shrubs and alpines etc.

If you’re not a flower person, there is an excellent range of vegetable plants.

The nursery is opposite the Bentley Brook pub and is open 7 days a week from 9.30 to 5.30.

Bill offers free delivery to the village and a discount for locals / villagers.

You can contact the nursery on 07713 743295 or for out of hours enquiries contact Bill on 390571.

A few weeks ago, parwich.org published some photographs of the glorious daffodils in Dorothy L’s woodland garden. Alas, the daffs have gone over now and the onerous task of dead-heading is well under way.

We have good news however. Dorothy’s woodland garden is looking more spectacular than ever. The bluebells are flowering and make a breathtaking scene. DSC_8658 - Phase One Capture 4 Adjusted_1195x800

Thanks again to Dorothy for allowing us to enjoy her garden through these pictures. Click on ‘Continue Reading’ for a floral feast!

The colours, scents and natural bird life can best be appreciated on a quiet weekday.

SPRING PLANT FAIR at Culland Hall

Near Brailsford – just off the A52.

SUNDAY, 26 APRIL, 11 am to 4 pm

Unusual Plants for sale from many leading specialist nurseries and R.H.S. Exhibitors

The Gardens at Culland Hall are also open – Parkland setting with wide terraced lawns and areas designed as rooms, white garden, colour theme borders, 19th century walled kitchen garden, woodland walk, hot border and much more.

Refreshments available all day – Entrance £3.50; children FREE; FREE car park!

All profits to The Mid-Derbyshire Association for Mobile Physiotherapy

This is a lovely plant fair. Last year we had plants that were being “launched” at Chelsea! So good to get the jump on fellow gardeneners… There is a fine collection of rare plants and trees on the grounds and thanks to the lovely recent weather, the garden is coming along nicely, so there should be lots to see!

Also, they have a fine collection of rare breed chickens and lovely Lleyn and Jacob sheep.

It is worth noting that Mobile Physio covers the southern Dales, including our own Parwich. I’m sure you’ve seen Beverley’s van in the village over the years offering free physiotherapy to the housebound.

Thanks to Debbie for this information.

PDHS is thriving, despite the loss of much of the expertise and experience of previous members. While we still attach great importance to being able to grow and show the perfect dahlia and chrysanthemum, we also cater for the other end of the gardening spectrum: those who get excited when they manage to produce a broad bean!

All members should by now have received the latest calendar, listing the dates of the up and coming trips and events. If you have not received one of these, then you may find your membership has lapsed…

Membership is £2 per annum, and the year runs from October to September. Membership gives you many benefits, including subsidised places on trips and cheap entry into the main show. For example, the trips to Consall Hall (20th May) and to Arley Hall gardens (22nd July) will cost £10 for members and £15 for non-members.

If anyone wishes to renew their membership or join the society, please can they see Nia Linnell (661) or Dot and Mike Hart (456).

Every year we make changes to the classes for you to exhibit in. The home produce section continues to expand, as does the unusual looking vegetable. There really is something for everyone: young or old, green fingered or not. The society is now working with the school, helping to help them grow their own produce which they will then eat and sell.

Please do check up on your membership, and don’t miss out on any PDHS events!

As you round the corner by the turn-off to the School, a rather special sight greets your eyes. Over the last few years, an area of ‘wilderness’ has been transformed into a calming, charming woodland garden. This transformation has been achieved thanks to an enormous amount of hard work by Dorothy L, who has realised her vision to establish meandering paths and wild flowers in a natural setting.

One of the joys of Spring is to see the daffodils bloom in this area. This year, they are magnificent. Here is Dorothy tending her garden:
