Garden Visitors

David G has had a beautiful Redwing visit his garden this morning. Thank you for sending in the photos David.

There are chances we may see more unusual visitors in our gardens with the bad weather.

Lucky David has also had a Goldcrest visiting his feeder today, poor things must be so cold out there tonight!

We have received the following information on bird flu form the Derbyshire Association of Local Councils via our Parish Council.

Last winter the UK experienced several outbreaks of avian influenza – better known as bird flu – and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is asking for help to share information in local communities. This highly contagious disease affects birds including chickens, ducks and geese, and can be fatal to them, devastating farmers’ livelihoods. It is just as much of a risk to those with a few chickens in a back garden as to commercial farmers and anyone who keeps chickens, ducks or geese. Defra is asking local councils to share their advice on bird flu in their respective communities, for example on noticeboards using their poster, through social media or in newsletters.

Please help spread the word

Green parakeet sighting

Lucy B has contacted us to say that this morning she experienced a random sighting of a bright green parakeet opposite her house.
They are common in London but has anyone ever seen one in our area? Or, has someone lost a pet?
Has anyone else seen it?

Updated later the same day

A pair of ringnecked parakeets (Psittacula krameri) were feasting on yew berries in the church yard this lunch time. Here is a photo of the female. The male did not stand still long enough to photograph him. Presumably they are from the breeding populations in either Manchester or Sheffield touring the countryside. It will be interesting how long they stay. Peter T

Pesky bird(s)

Has anyone else experienced occasional unwanted visits by a crow/rook (not sure what it is, and whether it is just one or more than one), wildly pecking at windows? Both Rita M and I have recently had the bird(s) visiting our windows, even the small window-panes of a door, leaving a mess and small scratches on the woodwork, probably harming themselves in the process. It seems clear that they are having a go at their own reflection. Rita and I are experimenting with various deterrents: shiny CD’s, closing the curtains, cling-film. In my case the cling-film appeared to work well whilst it was covering the affected windows for several weeks, but when I removed it a few days ago the bird(s) were back in no time! I like to think that I don’t need to cover my windows with cling-film forever, so wondered whether anyone else has successfully overcome the problem.

Bird Identification Help Please

Last night, about 9 o’clock I heard a sudden intense bird song. I have never heard a bird song like that before. I saw the bird which looked like a slim line thrush. I have looked online and think it could have been a nightingale. We look to be on the edge of the habitat for nightingales on the RSPB website. Has anyone else seen or heard a nightingale here? Am I deluding myself?!

Jackdaws

What is the collective noun for jackdaws? It certainly didn’t sound like a ‘murmuration’ this evening as they gathered to roost over Creamery Lane. Residents will be hoping it is not repeated as part of the dawn chorus.

I am assuming it is jackdaws rather than rooks, as it is mainly jackdaws that come into the garden.

It is with mixed feelings that we post these great swallow photos, as we are losing John and Marion to Winster. However we wish them all the best, and hope that this is not the end of his fantastic contributions to the Blog, though they will inevitablely become fewer. Also we hope to further mark John’s photographic involvement with parwich.org soon.
