Still Snowing

11am There has been a steady fall of snow this morning, with more still to come.  Thanks to Graham J for this update on the roads:

Dale Road and Alsop Road tricky this morning – no grit, probably only passable in 4×4. A515 to Buxton passable with care, snow blowing across in drifts at the usual locations (Parsley Hay, Flagg). Buxton side roads are bad.

Keep your comments coming.

Icy Roads

Though we have not had a lot of snow so far, as Cheryl W pointed out in her recent comment, the roads are dangerously icy.  The crash on the B5056 could have been much worse than it fortunately was.  The car can not have been that far from going off the road down the steep hillside.

With temperatures this morning the coldest on record locally, and likely to be as bad or even worse tonight, watch out for ice tomorrow morning.

Please add any updates on local road conditions as comments below.

Road conditions

At 8:45, Patti B writes:

Just to let you know that although the roads around Parwich are bad, the A515 north to Buxton is totally clear. The A52 to Derby has a layer of packed snow, and travel is very slow.

If any of our readers has further details to share on the current state of the roads in our area following last night’s snowfall, we would be most grateful to receive them in the comments box.

 Update on Green Lane, Pikehall

I recently wrote an article about green lanes and motor vehicles in Parwich parish magazine and on the Parwich website. I now wish to update you on the situation relating to Green Lane, Pikehall.

We have recently been informed by Derbyshire County Council that the claim to have this lane registered as a By Way Open to All Traffic (BOAT) has been closed. This means that the status of Green Lane will be unclear for the immediate future but it can no longer be used by public motor vehicles (excluding mobility scooters).

Signs will be erected on Green Lane in the near future to state that motor vehicles are not permitted (landowners and tenants with access are still permitted to use the route to access their fields) and we will monitor the situation with vehicle loggers. Should it be necessary we may ask the police to hold an Operation Blackbrook day at Pikehall to help explain to motor vehicle users about the confirmed new status of the route. Please leave any actions and enforcement to the appropriate authorities and bear in mind that this status has only just been confirmed by DCC and vehicle users may well be using the route unaware of the resolution of the routes status at the present time.

If you would like to discuss this matter further, then please don’t hesitate to call me on 01298 84992.

Lynn Burrow, Area Ranger, Peak District National Park Authority

Community Speed Watch

The next meeting of the Tissington Safer Neighbourhood Policing Meeting will be held for the first time in Parwich, at the Memorial Hall on Monday 13th December at 7pm.

In the minutes of the last meeting, held at Kniveton on 27th September, the group, under Sgt Steve Edwards and PCSO Kate Cleveley discussed ‘Community SpeedWatch’.  The scheme is already up and running in many of the villages.  Training would be given by the Sgt and then volunteers can use the equipment and fill in the appropriate paperwork.  A PCSO would be in attendance to assist.  It was pointed out that there would be no enforcement, but a letter is sent out to the driver to inform them of their speed.

This may be of interest to our community and anyone is welcome to attend the next meeting in December.  The police chair the meeting and normally various councillors and local residents attend and raise relevant issues.

Road Safety

We have received the following email from Andy L:

Despite the road works, this afternoon has been hair raising on Smithy Lane. The attached photo is from one of the skid marks where two tractors, both with large trailers, nearly collided head on. I didn’t measure it but it is more than six feet in length. Unfortunately they didn’t seem to learn from this experience nor take any notice of the children coming out of the school on foot. I witnessed two near collisions just in the time it took me to fetch the kids from school. I appreciate that some of the folk passing through have a job to get done and that “time is money” but this is getting silly.

Some more on road safety

Road safety is an issue raised by our readers at regular intervals, as illustrated by the post last Saturday, which has attracted a lot of interest and comments sharing the author’s concerns.  Here are a couple of earlier posts on the same topic:

It is great to see the increases in children playing out and in cycle use, and a majority (73%) of parwich.org readers support the idea of a 20mph speed limit in the village.

The Village Action Group raised the idea of the Parwich roads as a shared space (pedestrians having priority) including a 20mph speed limit with the Peak Park who are supportive of the idea.  (These ideas grew out of the traffic survey undertaken in preparation for the new Memorial Hall planning application.)

Parwich Parish Council regularly discuss roads and footpaths at their monthly meetings.  So look out for details of the next meeting.

Coincidently one of our readers has sent in these notes from a recent National Speed Awareness course: (more…)

Thank you to Lynne Burrow, Area Peak Park Ranger, for information relating to a voluntary restriction for motor vehicles on Gallowlow Lane, south of Mininglow over the winter and the erection of drive with care signs on Green Lane near Pikehall. It also explains how the action being taken on these lanes links to wider work that the National Park is carrying out to address problems caused by motor vehicle activity in the Peak District, which may also be of interest. The restriction/signs refer to motor vehicles and not pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders:

Issues relating to Green Lanes near Parwich.

The use of the Peak District landscape by 4x4s, quad bikes, trail bikes and other motorsport enthusiasts is one area that often arouses strong emotions. Concerns often centre around motorsports causing:

  • Damage to the landscape
  • Noise disruption to residents
  • Potential safety issues for other users, like walkers or cyclists.

The National Park understands these concerns and are working with all the agencies involved to try to resolve problems that may arise. We are working on a variety of areas. Two of these are: (more…)

We have received the following message from Sue H:

I sit in our kitchen and listen to the whoosh of cars or the great clanking of tractors that are simply going too fast. (For the most part lorries and vans approach at a much more acceptable speed). I can’t say whether vehicles are actually breaking the speed limit but they are certainly driving too fast to be safely under control. I really fear for a serious accident at some point. There have already been 2 kittens killed on the road and I hate the thought that at some point it could well be a child. We have 9 youngsters along this stretch, some of whom are old enough to be road savvy but others who will just be starting to venture out on their own.

Perhaps drivers are not aware that they are already in the village when they come down from Townhead. Or perhaps they think that they have already left all civilisation once past the Hall on their way up through Parwich Dale. Nobody seems to take notice of the existing “school” sign. I seem to remember someone mentioning Brassington’s idea for slowing down traffic at entry points to the village: white road markings and white fencing to give the impression of the road narrowing. Is this something we should be considering? Or what about setting a 20 mph limit through the village? Maybe this would be the only way to make people more responsible in their driving.

What do you think….?

Thanks to Graham J for the following bulletin. If you have more news to share on this incident, please let us know via comments or email.

As at 08:30 this morning a tree has fallen across The Dale road between Parwich and A515 in the wood below Upper Moor Farm. It has fallen across the road and is suspended at head height by a telephone wire. It looks very dangerous, and is quite hard to see in this morning’s light. The police have been informed, but please be very careful. It doesn’t look sensible to try to drive under it, and certainly if you’re in a wagon you couldn’t get through.

Sheep on the road

Over the past few weeks sheep keep appearing on the B5056, but today Pennie B has sent a comment in.  I don’t know if anyone has reported this, but it could be quite a hazzard, and not just to the sheep!

Lots of sheep out on the road from Bradbourne to the main road this morning!

Temporary Closure of A515

Please note that signs are up reporting a further planned closure of the A515 between Fenny Bentley and Sandybrook tomorrow Thursday 5th August 2010 – 6pm to 6am.

To avoid this you will need to go via Nether Bradbourne/Kniveton or via Thorpe.

I did note today that our brilliant new section of the B5056 is worryingly starting to develop some potholes along the edges of the road on both sides, though more markedly on the south bound lane.  So take care.

A515 temporary closure into Ashbourne

The A515 is closed south of the Bentley Brook going into Ashbourne from about 7pm to 5am for resurfacing.  We’d missed seeing the advance warning signs and at that stage it can be a real pain, so use the Bradbourne route to Ashbourne.  Work is scheduled to finish by Monday.

There are also traffic lights back on the B5056, it looks like they are putting fencing up on the north side of the road, maybe it will stop the sheep roaming onto the road.

Any updates are welcome.

Tissington Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team Governance Meeting
Minutes from the meeting – 16th June 2010, 7.30pm at Thorpe Village Hall

PCSO Kate Cleveley opened the meeting and the Minutes from the last meeting were distributed.  An amendment was made regarding attendance at the previous meeting.

Parking at Tissington Village
KC attended a meeting at Tissington Hall on 9/6/10 to discuss forming of a working party to find a solution to parking issues in the village. This will be known as the Traffic Management Plan (TMP). Fiona Attenborough (PA at Tissington Hall) will be coordinating an action plan to include all interested parties. Cattle Grids at entrance to Tissington village have now been replaced by DDDC Highways.  This was completed quickly and efficiently although there was a brief road closure.

Priority Profile Update
KC informed the meeting that there were still no new Priority Profiles in the area.

Kniveton school parking issues were still ongoing and letters had been sent out to all parents informing them of the dangers of their actions. Regular visits to monitor the situation at appropriate times would continue.

Mobile patrols would continue around the Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team area.

KC offered information regarding Community Speed watch and that this could take place in any of the villages if requested. (more…)

Late night crash

We understand that a single vehicle was involved in a collision with a wall in the centre of the village last night.

Our particular commiserations to the owner of the wall as she has only just got rid of the builders who had been working on the property almost continuously since the flooding and as this is the second time recently the wall has been hit.

At last the road to Ashbourne is re-opening today! (Thank you to Dave R for letting us know.)

The road blocks came down yesterday and some vehicles have already gone through.  The County Council can not give a specific time for the road closed signs to come down, though it will be officially open sometime today.

When you take the road watch out for loose chippings, and let us know how the road is now.  Also any photos are welcome.

Well done to Highways for finishing the road works within schedule, and well done for their general maintainance of the minor roads (particularly through Alsop en le Dale) that have suffered so much from the combination of increased traffic and bad weather.

Bikes – Be Safe

Another local resident has asked us to again to remind parents to talk to their children about road safety on their bikes, especially with the weather improving and half term almost upon us.  One of the numerous danger spots seems to be children racing out of Parsons Croft and straight across the road behind Orchard View, without looking.   We are so lucky that the children have such fun out and about, but their safety is paramount.

Many thanks to Dave R who has provided the following photos of the repairs to the landslip near the Bentley Brook Inn. They were taken on Monday 3rd May.

Delays on the Alsop Road

Thank you to Sue H for giving this information.

There are significant delays on the Alsop Road by Swiss Cottage, near Parwich Lees.  Delays can be as long as 15 minutes.  So if you are in a hurry or have an appointment then it may be best to go via Bradbourne.  Kerbing is being replaced and it has been suggested that work should be finished by the end of the day – but we do not have any official information.  Please keep us updated.

Latest Update
The workmen are coming back tomorrow to tarmac up to the kerbing – and intend to be finished tomorrow. Take care in the meantime round the corner as there are cones out which means the road is even narrower than usual at this point

Update on the B5056

Many thanks to Dave R who sent us the following information:

Work appears to be progressing very well both on the landslip near the Bentley Brook Inn and on road repairs between Bradbourne Ford and the landslip. I hear that it could be open by 11th May. The attached photographs show that the retaining wall on top of the piles is complete and that the stone facing is well advanced. Base layers of the road are being laid and compacted.

There seems to have been an additional landslip in the woods below the line of piles. You might be able to pick out the trees at odd angles in one of the attached the photographs.

The road surface is being repaired and drainage improved all along the stretch of road. New kerbing is in at Horsley Farm and new stone retaining walls are being built where the road has been scraped back to its original width. You’ll be pleased to note that the tight corner near Bradbourne Ford has been widened by cutting into the bank. Finally, many overhanging trees have been cleared from the roadside and this makes the road feel wider and lighter in those places.

Whilst the road closure has been very inconvenient for us all, I think that the council engineers should be congratulated on the improvements that they have carried out. See for yourselves in May.

There are also three new milestones along the route. No prizes are on offer, but we’re running an impromptu competition for the first photographs of these milestones to be sent into us. (Hint: The milestones are one mile apart!).

Tissington Ford

Thank you to Andy for this warning sent at lunch time today:

Just to let you know that the Tissington ford is now above the “1” level on the depth indicator. Folk in Tissington consider that to the limit for getting a two wheel drive car through safely.

Regards,
Andy.

Though with the drier afternoon it should be going down.

Alsop Road improvements.

The comment that Cheryl put on yesterday about the mud that has been dragged onto the road is true, but fortunately the weather so far has not made an adverse impact.

The good news is that Derbyshire County Council have been along the Alsop Road filling many of the deepest edges with chatter.  True, it does look a bit of a mess, but at least we won’t have to hold our breath whilst pulling over for other vehicles: wondering how deep the holes are and the danger to our tyres.

Tuesday 9.30pm – Having just driven back from Kniveton, snow is settling on the roads. Please take care in the morning.  Hopefully the temperature will have warmed up and the snow will have gone, but in places it is wet, so this could present an additional problem with ice.  Keep the blog up to date.

Watch your speed!

Today we received a reminder of the dangers of traffic going too fast through our villages, most of our lanes have no pavements and limited or non-existent verges.  This is particularly relates to where the road abruptly narrows between the gables of Dam Farm and Church Gates Cottage in the vicinity of the children’s Play Area, with a junction on one side, and an emerging footpath and suddenly ending pavement on the other, all on a bend:

I thought it would be a good idea to post a reminder about watching your speed in the village. Or rather, watching out for the speed of others! There was a coming together of a bus and van on the bend beside Dam Farm this morning (1 vehicle left a 40ft skid mark).

This follows the recent duck fatality at the same location! This is also the point where a public footpath meets the road, where little kiddies might venture out unexpectedly. A small child on a bike, for example, would not be visible from either direction until the last moment. Could you stop in time?

Ian P

As well as the damage to the two vehicles a garden wall was hit.

Thanks to Cheryl and Helen for sharing the following information.

Roads are very icy this morning, so care is needed. The Alsop road is quite bad all the way along where it has rained and then frozen, and there are patches of ice on the A515 to Ashbourne, particularly on the hill going down from Tissington gates to Fenny Bentley.
– Cheryl

I can second that. Going south to Ashbourne at 7:30 seemed OK, but going north at 8am there was significant black ice at the footbridge. Further north to Buxton is better, as it is actually milder here for a change!
– Helen

Latest this afternoon – Thanks Graham.  Please be warned that if this rain freezes on the snow, the roads may well cause problems.  Please update us.

Major bad journey home tonight (Wednesday). Left Buxton at 5:10pm (I know – part timer). Got stuck at Brierlow Bar on the A515, decided to cut across to A6 via Chelmorton. Driving conditions appalling. Home 1hr:45 mins later just a little bit stressed. Had to break NY resolution and reward myself with a pint of Oddfellow Ale.

I think the A6 and A515 are presently closed.

As we have been asking every day this week, please update the blog on the road conditions.  Although it appears that the thaw is maybe starting, there are warnings of icy roads again.   The information that you send in is extremely helpful to other drivers.  Thank you.

11am – Roads are generally OK but slushy, spray from lorries can temporarily reduce your visibility – drive with care & your lights on.

5.45pm – The A515 is like a pea soup, visibility down to about 50 metres.
Also from the Church up Creamery Lane is slippery in parts (certainly in a car).
