The Christmas Trees in the Church

There is a wonderful display of Christmas trees in the Church, decorated by the different societies, groups and individuals in the village. An enormous amount of effort has gone into this and if you haven’t already been in to have a look, please do.
Remember it is the Crib Service on Thursday at 4pm, everyone is extremely welcome.

Remembrance

As always past and present members of the Forces marched to the Church from the Legion. This year for the first time the Cyber Scouts joined the Parade. This photo was taken when the Service moved outside to the War Memorial for the 11am silence with Tom playing the Last Post on the trumpet.
Remembrance Sunday tomorrow
Posted in British Legion, Memorial hall, People on Saturday November 7, 2009| Leave a Comment »
Though Remembrance Day is technically the 11th of November, usually we mark it on the nearest Sunday, which this year is tomorrow the 8th November:
- In Parwich Church there is a joint Anglican and Methodist Remembrance Service at 10-15am.
- In Alsop Church the Remembrance Service is at 10-45am
To understand more about the origins of the Poppy Appeal and Remembrance Day click here to see our last year’s post.
The deaths in Afghanistan make Remembrance Services much more immediate this year, but there are also reasons closer to home that make this year more significant.
Given our Memorial Hall is currently being rebuilt, it is a good time to think about how we remember those who gave their lives. The names on our War Memorial and where they are buried can be seen by clicking here. The majority are buried or commemorated overseas, but Pte Ronald Cotterill and Trp Robin Philips who died during World War II are buried in Alsop Church Yard.
Parwich & District Local History Society is gathering any information on the people named on the War Memorial (e.g. Brunskill Lowes), so please send any information you have to them or to us here at PARWICH.ORG.

2009 Poppy Appeal
Posted in British Legion, People on Friday October 23, 2009| Leave a Comment »
Yesterday saw the launch of this year’s Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. You can donate on-line (click on the poppy above to go to the Royal British Legion website) or get your poppies locally at the Parwich Legion and the Sycamore Inn.
Obviously the memory of those who died in action is more to the fore this year as we are rebuilding the Memorial Hall, part of our community’s recognition of their sacrifice and a celebration of what they fought for.

This post and the photos don’t do justice to what was a really good, well attended and excellently organised series of events, nonetheless…
Wakes Friday hosted a “Race Night Triathlon” involving balls, ferrets and “horses”.
The evening’s activities began at Pump Hill with the Ball Race at 7.00 pm sharp. This was followed by the Race Night at the Legion (including the Thoroughbred Ferret Furlong & the Legion Grand National).

St George’s Day & The Church Fete
Posted in A52s, British Legion, Church, Cyberscouts, Events, Oddfellows on Friday April 17, 2009| Leave a Comment »
As we have seen from earlier posts there will be a fun packed day on Sunday 26th April, starting with a Procession at 10.15am from The British Legion to the Church, led by the Oddfellows, Cyberscouts and Doveholes Brass Band, everyone else is then invited to join in. Hopefully there will be lots of children dressed up as St George or The Dragon on their way to the Church Service at 11am.
During the afternoon the Winster Morris Men and the A52’s will be entertaining us with live dancing & live music whilst the Church Fete is being held on The Green (if wet in The Church).
There are lots of attractions including Face Painting, Local Handmade Candles, Jewellery, lots of games including Famous Faces, Hoop-la, Box & Beanbag, a Crown Derby Raffle and Tombola.
A fete wouldn’t be complete with a Home-produce stall, so all cakes, jams, chutneys etc would be gratefully received. The Second Hand stall also needs plenty of bits, so you have a week to rake out those cupboards, lofts & garages for all those bits that you really don’t need, but others would love – Go rumaging!!
There will be an icecream van on The Green whilst Teas are available in The Church, whilst there you can enjoy seeing the Model Railway which has been especially set up for the ocassion.
What is needed – Home-made produce, Second Hand goods & Tombola Prizes

The Red Devils consist of Josie and Tim: a couple from Birmingham, who travel around the country with a mixture of Josie singing and a Karaoke machine for those who like to show their own talents. They have visited the Legion on several occasions, and Carl assures us that “it should be fun!!!”

Apologies for the late publication regarding this week’s Ashbourne News Telegraph. Unfortunately the blog team are a man down, as Peter is not well at the moment.
From Sunday, we will also be losing Christopher – so if you are interested in joining this very friendly, small team, please email us.
- p3. Keeping with the traditional name – A ‘new’ name for the hospital, but Mrs V Wright from Parwich who submitted two names is quoted as saying, “If that’s what people want then fair comment, but it’s a shame a new building hasn’t got a new name….”.
- p5. Compost fire firm wins ‘green’ award – Vital Earth which of course has Parwich links through Mr Robert Shields, has won the International Green Hero Award and will now be automatically put forward in European Business Awards for the Environment. A spokesman for the judges said that they were not aware of the fire incident, but this would not have necessarily affected their decision if they had known. (more…)
