Children can try being a lead miner, meet characters from the past, and enjoy things that go boom, bang or squelch at a free archaeological family fun day at the 270-year-old Magpie Mine, Sheldon, on Saturday July 31, 10.30am-3pm.

Peak District National Park rangers and the Peak District Mines Historical Society are staging “Magpie Mayhem,” with activities for adults and children alike.

The event is part of the Festival of British Archaeology and National Parks Week, and will include a guided tour of the site by the National Park’s senior survey archaeologist, John Barnatt.

The Peak District Mines Historical Society, which owns and manages Magpie Mine, will display scale models and genuine mining artefacts to help explain the archaeology and will talk about their work on site.

National Park area ranger Lynn Burrow said: “Magpie Mine has a really colourful history, including conflict and tragedy in the 1830s as rival groups of miners tried to smoke each other out.  We’ll be helping families explore their local history with an interactive discovery trail, and children can become a lead miner, meet historical characters, make “bradder” hats and enjoy games and activities. Families can bring a picnic and make a day of it.”

No need to book, just turn up on the day.  Magpie Mine is a mile or so from Monyash, so about 20 minutes from Parwich.

There were some wonderful entries in the Parwich Horticultural Society Childrens’ Show this year. It was clear that a lot of hard work and imagination had gone into the entries. Many thanks to the children (and parents!) who worked so hard to create such a fine set of exhibits. Well done especially to all those who won prizes!

Below is a gallery of the entries. Click on each picture to enlarge it.

The new Memorial Hall was put to good use during Parwich Open Gardens this Sunday. It was great to see so many people buying plants, playing tombola, enjoying tea and scones in the main hall and drinking up the sunshine on the new terrace. Hard-working volunteers in the kitchen enjoyed the extra space and found the continuous hot water and ‘4 minute’ dishwasher to be of enormous use given the demand.

Below are a few pictures showing the new facility in action. Note the Children’s Show will be covered in another post.

Here is the first of several photo galleries of Sunday’s Open Gardens and Childrens’ Horticultural Show. The weather remained fine and sunny throughout, ensuring that plenty of visitors turned up to enjoy the fourteen gardens on display. This was also the first major public event to take place in our new Memorial Hall, and trade was brisk throughout the afternoon, with many people opting to take advantage of the sunny patio area on the south side of the building.

Got nothing planned for Saturday, why not do something amazing this year and join in on the Ashbourne Breast Cancer Walk, 8.5 miles, open to walkers of all ages.

The starting point will be the Carsington Water Visitor Centre, leaving at 2.30pm therefore early arrival is recommended for all walkers, registration is required from all walkers including children – £10 adults and £5 for children. Click here for the registration form.

All the money raised from the 2010 walk will go towards funding for equipment for the Breast Cancer Unit at Royal Derby hospital.

Whilst enjoying this walk there’s plenty to see.   Our resident ornithological photographer, (not sure if you can say this) JF-S, went to Carsington Water, especially to see what bird life might be spotted during the big walk – birds include: tufted ducks, great crested grebes, redshanks, lapwings, godwits, barnacle geese and The A52s.  They may not be birds, but they will be entertaining everyone with their “tweeting” from about 4.15pm.

p.s – I know the A52s don’t tweet, they sing with manly gusto, but it flowed with the bird theme!

A very bright idea was turned into reality on Sunday when the people of Parwich showcased their many and varied skills. Often, such skills are hidden from view, so it was quite astonishing to see the huge array of talent contained within our small village.

The event featured shepherding, woodturning, quilting, painting, photography, organ playing, jewellery making, bell ringing, metal detecting, historical research, coffee refinement, geology, flower arranging, rag rug making, weaving, felting, card making, mountain rescue and many other crafts.

Thank you to the exhibitors for the time and trouble you took to give us such an inspiring show. Thanks especially to Jean and Martin C for the inspiration for this event and for your tireless energy ‘making it happen’.

Click on ‘Continue Reading’ for a (rather large) photo gallery covering just some of the activities and exhibits on view.
