Meet The A52s!
Posted in 2008, A52s, British Legion, Events, People, Posts of Note on Monday October 20, 2008| 1 Comment »
If you took a Tuesday evening stroll along Smithy Lane this Summer, you may have heard the sound of clinking beer bottles, manic strumming, improvised accordions and uncontrollable laughter. This, ladies and gentlemen, was the sound of The A52s creating music. In the first week, the band learned some notes. In the second week, they tried putting them in the right order. As the weeks went by, these top musicians learned enough notes to do a debut gig! Terrifying huh?! We think so too!
The band turned down frantic offers from lesser venues such as the NEC and the O2 Arena, opting instead for the prestigious yet intimate Parwich Legion. The band will appear 8.30 to 9ish on Saturday 8th November. Make a note in your diaries for an evening of fine entertainment. Free admission (in fact, the band may be paying you)!
The A52s is Parwich’s foremost folk-rock band, comprising 4 musicians at the top of their game (which happens to be Snap):
Rob ‘Squeezebox’ Francis (concertina accordian, guitar & vocals)
Lewis ‘Bassnote’ Noble (piano accordian, guitar & vocals)
Chris ‘Deliverance’ Radlett (banjo, 12 string guitar & vocals)
Mike ‘The Ax’ Hughes (guitar & vocals)

Thanks to John F-S for the photos.
p.s. Somebody left an umbrella. Just call round for it if it’s yours!

New date for Snail Trail garden gate sale
Posted in Events, Project Parwich on Wednesday September 24, 2008| 4 Comments »
Well, postponing the previous date because of bad weather was certainly prescient, as we had the worst rain on record and a lot of people were too busy clearing up to have much time for any buying or selling. However a new date is now planned:
Parwich Snail Trail Garden Gate Sale
This will hopefully go ahead on Saturday 25th October
So please keep everything you were going to sell and
pray for a good day!
More details to follow.

Harvest Supper on Monday night was an evening enjoyed by almost 60 people, there was good food, good wine (as long as you brought your own) and good company. A lot of work had been put into the event and we were very grateful to all those who donated salads, jacket potatoes & crumbles and those who helped in any other way. There was as always a very successful and entertaining auction, once we know how much was raised we will update this blog.

What a delightful service it was today at the Harvest Festival, a joint event with St Peter’s Church and Parwich Methodists. The church was beautifully decorated, every window sill full of autumn fruits and vegetables.
Harvest Supper. The produce will be auctioned tomorrow night at the Harvest Supper. We are delighted that all the tickets have been sold. We look forward to seeing you at 6.30pm in the Memorial Hall. Any further produce, fruit, veg, flowers and cakes will be gratefully received because we are a little short of things for the auction.
Thank you to Martin C for sending in these photos.

£170 raised at Coffee Morning
Posted in Church, Events on Saturday September 20, 2008| Leave a Comment »
An amazing £170 was raised at the Church Kneeler Coffee Morning today, this also included the sale one of the kneelers. It was disappointing to see so few people supporting a village event, but for those there it was a lovely opportunity to catch up with friends. Thank you especially to Helen & Ian who opened their home up despite the damage caused by the floods, and thank you to all who donated, supported and helped.

WI & the Everest Marathon
Posted in Events, Societies on Friday September 19, 2008| 2 Comments »
Being one of the three men that attended this talk, I can uncategorically say that those of you who did not go on Thursday evening missed an excellent talk and some incredible photos. Clare Shea-Simonds, an experienced athlete, has recently won a European silver medal for Triathlon. She and her husband, with some 80 other westerners and Nepalese, entered last year’s Everest Marathon, and Parwich WI reaped the benefit of having her mother on their committee.
Amazing though the challenge of a marathon starting near Everest Base Camp at 17,000 feet is, the challenge of walking to the start is as impressive. Described as the worlds most impressive race, it has been run 12 times since 1987. Clare talked of Nepal, the poverty (the average income is around £125 a year) and the people. (more…)

Flower & Vegetable Show report
Posted in 2008, Events, Gardens, Posts of Note on Monday September 8, 2008| Leave a Comment »
Thank you to the Horticulture Society for the following write up of their 58th Annual Flower & Vegetable Show:
Despite the dullest August on record and flash floods the day before the Show, washing some regular exhibitors vegetables away, entries were only a little down on last year. However, despite this the village put on an excellent display.
The Horticultural Society are particularly grateful to the commitment of the judges. Mr R Hill of Dronfield worked particularly hard this year judging the local flowers as usual, the local vegetables in place of Mrs Hill who was unwell and also jointly the open chrysanthemum classes as the planned judge had to withdraw because of a family commitment. Mr W K Wilkins of Bradley judged the dahlias and jointly with Mr Hill the chrysanthemums. Mrs M Oldfield of Buxton, a former head of catering at M & S judged the home produce section. This was her first year as one of our judges and we hope we will see her again in the future. The organisers were particularly impressed that she noted that she was served an M & S quiche for lunch. Last but not least we would also like to thank Emma of Absolutely Fabulous in Ashbourne for stepping in at the last minute to very professionally judge the floral art.
The Society would also like to give a big thank you to all who worked so hard to make the day a success. As can be seen from the list of trophy winners below Tony and Rita very nearly swept the board. (more…)

The Horticultural Society offers its commiserations to all effected by the flood, and hopes you get sorted out soon. It was impressive to see the Shop/Pub trading more or less as usual at the same time as the clean up operation was going on. They certainly deserve to do well in the Best Community Pub award in ten days or so. Well the Show must go on.
If you have any flowers, fruit or vegetables left (at least Mike and Dot don’t need to pick theirs, the flood has spread them across the lawn) please bring you entries along between 8am and 11am on Sunday morning (7th Sept). If you crop has been washed away come along at 3pm for the auction of produce so you can still stock up your freezer.
