Firstly, I know that I missed a post in February, but as it is such a short month, I’m hoping that it doesn’t count! Anyway, here is some fantastic news to eclipse my tardiness :
Parwich First Responders have not 1 but 3 new volunteers awaiting training. This really is fantastic as we appeared to be dwindling fast. Not that this news should put off anyone who might have been considering swelling our ranks since the more of us there are, the greater our coverage of the weekly rota. There is usually someone on holiday or just too busy with work and other commitments to be able to respond.
Our group met to train last month. It was particularly useful to refresh our memories of how to administer oxygen since guidelines and methods appear to change with alarming frequency. We always practise our resuscitation skills using training dollies. This is critical for all of us because unlike paramedics we are not constantly being called out to put our training into practice. Without our ongoing training we would quickly become rusty and lose confidence in our abilities.
There have been two call-outs for the group in the last 2 months. An incident to which we were not called was the one involving the air ambulance. Villagers may not be aware that East Midlands Ambulance Service do not send Community First Responders to incidents involving trauma (to the body, not to us, although this is actually precisely why we are not sent to attend young children). Thankfully the casualty in this case has made a full recovery in no small part due to the calmness of those at the scene and the skill of the helicopter pilot in landing on such difficult terrain. This incident also highlights the value for all of us in acquiring some basic First Aid skills – you never know when you might be in a position to use them, even as a passer-by.
Please remember to call 999 in the event of any emergency. The responder on call (providing we have a volunteer available) will then be contacted directly by EMAS. Please do not waste time scrabbling round for personal telephone numbers of people who might not even be in the village at the time.
Finally, thank you to our new volunteers!

Sue H is Chair of The Parwich First Responders. Here is her first update of 2011.
My New Year’s Resolution is to try and give more information about Parwich First Responders as a group. Anyone who knows my hopeless typing and computer skills will realise that this will amount to quite a challenge for me.
However, it needs doing and as Chair (again, all those who know me will be aware that I once forgot that I’d volunteered/ been persuaded to take on this role for a whole year!!) I’m going to attempt to keep it up for longer than just January.
So here goes: (more…)

Sue H says:
Parwich First Responders would be hugely grateful if as many people as possible could complete the questionnaire that was recently delivered through letter boxes. Completed questionnaires can be posted in the marked box at The Sycamore (on the table outside the shop).
If you would like to be entered for the raffle, please leave your details. It is fine to reply anonymously too. Your replies will help us understand how well we’re communicating with the village. Hopefully a few new volunteers might also be inspired to contact us.
A happy and event-free Christmas to all!

Last year Parwich First Responders organised training for all interested parties in how to care for children in life-threatening situations. They are keen to organise more such training if there is sufficient interest:
Do you want another visit by ALAN GIBSON, CONSULTANT NEONATOLOGIST (children’s doctor in charge of new born baby unit) of Sheffield Hospitals?
It is now a year since Alan and his team came to the village to teach us about how to care for infants and children that we found in a life-threatening situation, e.g. unconsciousness, fits, drowning, electrocution, head injury.
We have recently been in touch with him and he would very much like to visit our village again. He is willing to come with his team, for as long as we wish, whenever we wish and to teach whatever we wish! So long as we can organize some dates for him.
So this note is just to let you know of his offer.
As before he is happy to teach anyone – those with direct care of children, those who come across children in their working lives, and of course grandparents etc., who may take care of children.
Could you please contact us and let us know if you are interested, and which group you fit into. When we know what you want we will go back to Alan and try to arrange some suitable dates.
Take care.

The live Parwich weather station recorded a record low temperature of -8.8 degrees C at 05:30am this morning (Thursday 7th January) which is the lowest temperature recorded since the live weather station records began over 3 years ago. Temperatures have been around or below freezing since the middle of December, and the extreme cold seems set to continue, possibly for another 2 weeks. Severe weather warning have been issued for our area with strong winds coming in over the weekend. So although the weather should be bright it will feel even colder.
We have been asked by one of our readers to highlight some of the potential dangers.
Finally, a big thank you to the First Responders, all local volunteers, who are continuing to offer cover to the village, both in the day and throughout the night. This resource is even more crucial during this period as the combination of our present road difficulties along with treacherous driving means that it could take emergency vehicles longer to attend any incident in or around Parwich.

There is a wonderful display of Christmas trees in the Church, decorated by the different societies, groups and individuals in the village. An enormous amount of effort has gone into this and if you haven’t already been in to have a look, please do.
Remember it is the Crib Service on Thursday at 4pm, everyone is extremely welcome.

Many thanks to the Parwich First Responders who gave up their time on this sunny day to teach some of their skills. A steady stream of people visited the Memorial Hall to learn what to do in the event of choking, heart attack or unconsciousness. The event was very well set up and has given many people some knowledge that may prove invaluable one day.

This is an incredibly important opportunity that Martin, Jean & The First Responders are providing for us all. None of us ever knows when we might be faced with an adult, child or baby choking, a heart attack or a family member or friend who suddenly loses consciousness.
On Saturday 13th June, between 10am & 5pm make time to call into the Memorial Hall, even if it is just for a few minutes & you can be shown quickly & safely how you could save someone’s life – that life may belong to someone very close to you. Just 5 Minutes to Save a Life – Make room in your diary for this date. Click on post to enlarge.

A slightly belated notice to say that we now have three additional members of the Parwich First Responders – Val S, Colin B snd Ben B. Congratulations to you on completing your training and many thanks for providing your time to support this essential service.
Parwich First Responders now comprise 21 front line volunteers. The addition of new responders helps the group to provide as much coverage as possible in the event that one of us ‘has a bit of a turn’. Ambulances can sometimes take a while to reach us so it is very helpful to have people available who can be on the scene very quickly.
Responders indicate their availability each week and a rota is drawn up. This rota is currently put together by Heather H as part of her Duke of Edinburgh community service work. The job is ideally suited to young people doing Duke of Edinburgh. If you would like to take on the role once Heather’s time comes to an end later this year, please contact Martin C or Sue H on 334. Similarly, contact the same people for information on becoming a First Responder.

Parwich.org would like to thank all those from Parwich First Responders who have maintained good coverage of the village and the surrounding area despite the difficult conditions. Ambulances can take a considerable time to reach us in weather conditions like this so it is reassuring to know the First Responders are available locally (via 999) should a situation arise.
We thought this picture of the Vale First Responders 1×1 Response Vehicle showed particular inventiveness!

Thank you to everyone for making the children’s resuscitation course on Saturday so successful – to the 29 participants who made the day enjoyable and for the mutual support and encouragement you all gave. And of course Rachel and other members of the WI who supplied tea, coffee, cakes and soup – and of course invaluable emotional care during the breaks.
We are hoping to put on another day course later in the year – please let us know if you would like to put your name down.
If you cannot fit a full day in, but would like some personal teaching on resuscitating a young baby or child in difficulties, do please let us know. We hope to have our own child dollies soon and would be more than willing to fit in with you and pass on the knowledge we picked up – just let us know a time and place!
Many thanks to you all.

Yesterday 29 of us attended probably the most important course in our lives – learning how to save a child’s life – that child could be yours!
Course was supported by the Charity ‘Just A Few Minutes’, organized by Alan Gibson consultant neonatologist at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, and staff from Sheffield & Chesterfield Hospitals. We were dealing with the most precious of things, a child’s life, but never has a course seems so compelling and interesting. Considering the seriousness of the subject, at times we were in fits of laughter, especially when faced with some of the ‘real life’ scenarios and the initial ways in which we tried to deal with the situation. Ben And Martin put up the village map today, on the south approach road to the village, at the entrance to Stephen Dale’s yard. Thank you to Stephen for letting us site it there.
If you would like a paper copy of the map to keep at home for easy reference, then please attach a comment here, or contact us at martin@orchidserve.com, or phone us on 529.
Happy Christmas from Parwich First Responders.

As you are probably aware many of us have the names of our houses as addresses, and rarely use the street name (if it exists). A village map is in the process of being produced, and it is hoped that when this is sited in the village it will help visitors find their way around. This process is well underway and we look forward to its completion.
However in the interim there have been difficulties for emergency vehicles trying to find addresses in the village. Recently we had a fire engine and the senior fire officer up here at Gibbons Bank by mistake looking for Monsdale Lane.
Today the emergency ambulance needed help finding a house which had made a 999 call. The emergency services have asked for our help – especially with the festive season coming up.
As a temporary solution permission has been given to site a copy of the First Responders village map on a board on the roadside near to the south entrance to the village, next to the drive to Stephen Dale’s yard. We hope this will meet with the village’s approval.
However if anyone is unhappy about this, or has any alternative better solutions to the problem, we are more than happy to reconsider. Do please ring us on 390 529 or add comments to this blog entry.
Here’s to a healthy trouble-free Christmas (or is that an oxymoron?)
Season’s Greetings from Jean and Martin Compton, on behalf of Parwich First Responders

We had a good turnout at the Parwich First Responders’ Social Evening in the Memorial Hall on Sunday evening. Many thanks to all who brought food and refreshments for the event. A particular thanks also to the Responders themselves who give their time to train and be on call in case an emergency occurs. Parwich and the surrounding region is a safer place because of you!

The above group will be coming to give us a day’s teaching on what to do if you find a child in a life threatening situation.
It will be on Saturday 31st January 2009 in the Memorial Hall, and will run from 9 to 5, and will be free.
All areas of emergency situations involving children will be covered, including choking, drowning, poisoning, fits etc. We will have lectures in the morning and then spend the afternoon in (scarily) realistic scenarios outside, around the hall and in the village.
If you are a parent, a grandparent, a child minder, a teacher or just someone who would like to know how to help a child in an emergency, this course would be ideal for you.

The First Responders asked us to post the following:
A THANK YOU FROM PARWICH FIRST RESPONDERS … AND WHY NOT JOIN US???
We have been rather busy over the last few weeks and we would like to thank all those villagers who have helped when someone has become unwell – you know who you are – and the community spirit in this village is fantastic – thank you.

For those of you who don’t know about Parwich First Responders we are a group of 15 or so villagers who have been trained by East Midlands Ambulance Service. They ‘employ’ us and insure us – after a 999 call has been received from our immediate area, if they feel it is appropriate, they call us and we respond. (more…)
