Posted in Flora, Gardens on Saturday October 30, 2010| 1 Comment »
A resident of Ecton is undertaking a survey of varieties of apple trees cultivated in our general area, and several Parwich residents have asked us to post her questionnaire here. If you are interested in participating click here to down load the questionnaire.
It should be completed by the 5th of November, and you can give it to Jackie Battell in Parwich for dropping off.

In tribute to the magnificent horse chestnut trees, some of which had to be felled due to disease, here is a mini-slideshow showing some photographs taken recently.
In memory of the chestnuts
Posted in 2010, Flora, Posts of Note on Sunday October 24, 2010| 5 Comments »
The avenue of horse-chestnut trees at Nethergreen was planted to celebrate the coronation of the Queen nearly 60 years ago. For some fifty years they flourished, supplying several generations with conkers. A number of years ago they were discovered to have a disease, that could not be treated.
Professional advice was for the disease run its course, cutting down the worst effected trees as necessary. Unfortunately some more had to go today:
The disease is spread in the ground water so any replacement chestnuts would succumb. However here is a reminder of the same view a year ago:
Photos by JF-S (At least the very old chestnut tree in the Churchyard is up steam, and a ‘left over’ tree from the avenue is still going strong in Hallcliffe garden, where it was planted by Mrs Dodds.)

Lost terracotta pot
Posted in Classified adverts, Flora, Memorial hall on Monday September 6, 2010| Leave a Comment »
A terracotta pot, approximately 6 inches tall with black writing on the front was left behind in the Memorial Hall at the end of yesterday’s Flower and Vegetable Show. It had been holding a mixed bunch of herbs and if anyone knows where it was put could you please let me know.
With thanks, Rita
Updated 8/9/10: Rita would like to thank the Horticultural Society for keeping her pot safe and returning it to her.

After taking a year’s break in 2009, Parwich’s annual horticultural show returned in fine style on Sunday, with another stunning display of local vegetables, fruits, flowers, pot plants, cakes, loafs, flans, biscuits, jams, chutneys, eggs and other assorted goodies.
Three excellent new categories were introduced this year, two of them (the trifles and the sculptures made from bar snacks) being specifically designed to showcase the skills of Parwich’s menfolk. There were also plenty of entries in the horticultural photography competition, which saw the memorial hall’s brand new display boards being put to use for the first time. Thanks are due to the organisers of the Parwich Panoramic Five, for raising most of the funding for these new boards.
Prize giving took place at 3pm, with Jo Larkin presenting the winners with their trophies. Full results will follow shortly. The day then concluded with the traditional auction of produce, as officiated by Robert Bunting.
Many thanks to the Horticultural Society, for organising such a well-run and popular event.

Only a few weeks ago it seemed everything was behind, now people might be worrying that everything will be over before Open Gardens later in the month on Sunday 20th June. Thank you to Mike G for this photo of a Weigela ‘Victoria’.

Alien Plant Invaders
Posted in 2010, Environment, Flora, Peak Park, Posts of Note on Sunday May 23, 2010| Leave a Comment »
Several escaped garden plants are a nuisance in the Peak Park, including Japanese knotweed, rhododendron and Himalayan balsam.
Locally there is Japanese Knotweed in Parwich churchyard which fortunately was spotted in time. Once established, Japanese knotweed is virtually indestructible. (Neither weed killer nor digging it up help. About all you can do is plant trees to hide it.) Next to the shed in the churchyard, the Parwich plant has been cut off every time it shows above ground for several years. Now, although it continues reappearing, it is looking much less vigorous.

A Japanese knotweed plant keeps sending up shots just before the wall, here in Parwich churchyard. If you see any shots please snap them off.
Do you know of any other sites these plants grow in Parwich, Alsop, Ballidon or Pikehall?
The Peak Park Authority have sent a request for volunteers to help with their campaign to control Himalaya balsam that is taking over some river banks in the Park. Although it is an attractive pink flower with exploding seed pods that children love, it completely smothers the native plants.
For more on their plans to combat Himalayan balsam read the Peak Park’s full press release – (more…)

When the snow melts the first flowers of the year should be appearing: the yellow aconites and even the shoots of snow drops. Lambing and calving may not be that far away.
How about sending in your photos to PARWICH.ORG (email parwich@hotmail.co.uk) of the ‘firsts’ of the year as they occur.

Thank you to Nia for the following write up and to Mike H and Peter for the photos:
Parwich and District Horticultural Society had a very successful day on Sunday as visitors poured into the village to take a stroll around 12 delightful gardens, rest in the memorial hall with a delicious cream tea and take a look at the exhibits in the children’s show.
Parwich Open Gardens

The sun broke through the clouds and shone down on Parwich Open Gardens this year. Despite the closed road on the B5056, several hundred people visited the gardens this Sunday, making the event a huge success. Thank you to everyone who entered the horticultural show and well done to those who won prizes!
Members of the Horticultural Society manned the plant sale which generated much interest amongst the visitors.
Cream teas were provided thanks to the hard work of the backroom staff and thanks to those who baked scones and helped prepare for the ‘hungry hoards’.
Thanks as well to those who opened up their gardens and provided so much inspiration to us all. It is not possible to provide photographs of every garden, but click ‘continue reading’ below to view a gallery of snaps taken during the afternoon. Each picture can be enlarged by clicking on it. Return to the gallery by pressing the ‘back’ button.
