Planting for bees?

Despite the cool weather the bumblebees seem to be quite active. In my garden they are going for the lungworts (pulmonaria) and the perennial wallflowers (erysimum) rather than the spring bulbs. What are they making a bee line for in your garden?

Little Garden Birdwatch

Remember to get tweeting and twittering this weekend!

Over the weekend of 30-31 January the RSPB is running their annual Big Garden Birdwatch. ( See RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch for more details ). In conjunction with this we will once again run our own Alsop, Ballidon, Pikehall and Parwich Little Garden Birdwatch. Whilst the RSPB want to know numbers of different bird species seen during a one hour period  we simply what to know what species have been seen over the weekend in and around the villages. There will be a post to log sightings available over the weekend. For anyone doubtful of their bird recognition skills the RSPB site is pretty good, where you can find an A-Z Guide and useful tools to help identify a specific bird sighting.

Our target for the weekend is a challenging 40 different species so the more taking part the better.

Listed below are some of the species we hope will be spotted (more…)

Generous Support

The Blog Team would like to thank the Horticultural Society and another donor who wishes to remain anonymous for their kind donations. The Blog has been running since 2007 and until this year has been funded by the Blog Team members.

Parwich.org costs an average of £120 per year to run, with an additional £40 spent last year to provide prizes for competitions. Costs have increased over the years as more storage/memory space has had to be purchased. Other costs include the cost of the domain, the cost of a version of WordPress which we can customise and the cost of keeping the site free of adverts.

Thank you for your support,
Peter, Emma, Fiona, Lucy and Steve

Horticultural Society Donations

At last night’s Horticultural Society AGM £500 was donated to the following village groups:

Parwich Over 60s

Churchyard Volunteer Group towards the cost of a new shed

Parwich School Eco Committee

Parwich. Org, village blog and website towards running costs.

The success of the Open Gardens event has enabled the society to help local groups as a thank you to the village for the time, tolerance and assistance given during Open Gardens. Money raised at this event is also used to subsidise Horticultural Society trips and to help fund the Annual Horticultural Show in September.

Open Gardens next year will take place on Sunday 26 June.

Plant Thug in Parwich

Thank you Mike R for this information:

Himalayan Balsam (Impatiens glandulifera)

I wonder if any other residents of Parwich have found this plant in their gardens. This year for the first time I have found an abundance of this weed in our gardens at Flaxdale. I have not been aware of it before now. It grows in height at an astonishing speed, about an inch a day.

Wikipedia describes it as follows… “It typically grows to 1 to 2 m (3.3 to 6.6 ft) high, with a soft green or red-tinged stem, and lanceolate leaves 5 to 23 cm (2.0 to 9.1 in) long. The crushed foliage has a strong musty smell. Below the leaf stems the plant has glands that produce a sticky, sweet-smelling, and edible nectar. The flowers are pink, with a hooded shape, 3 to 4 cm (1¼ to 1½ in) tall and 2 cm (¾ in) broad; the flower shape has been compared to a policeman’s helmet.

After flowering between June and October, the plant forms seed pods 2 to 3 cm (¾ to 1¼ in) long and 8 mm broad (¼ in), which explode when disturbed, scattering the seeds up to 7 metres (23 feet).” (see https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impatiens_glandulifera )

It was highlighted as a nuisance on the East Midlands evening news recently. Whenever I see it in the garden I pull it up and compost it before the seed pods form.

I would be interested to know of anyone else’s experience with this invasive weed and whether I am doing the correct thing.

Mike R

The above plant was photographed in a Creamery Lane garden this July. It went from less than a foot tall to full flower in just over three weeks. It is particularly problematic along water courses, where it’s rapid growth quickly smothers native plants.

An Artistic Challenge

Fancy your chance at Floral Art? In this year’s Horticultural Show you can enter a floral arrangement in an egg cup, an arrangement on the theme Up the Garden Path – or how about having a go at a new idea for this year and use a fruit or vegetable as a container for an arrangement?
