We made it to £160 thanks to some final plant sales. The Horticultural Society will be forwarding this money to the Memorial Hall in due course to help with their running costs. We are grateful to all those who donated plants for sale as well as to those who bought them.Sue H

Sales organised by Parwich Horticultural Society outside Rookery House have gone really well. We have what will probably be the last batch of plants to sell. These include Cornus “Midwinter Fire”, Hostas and Spirea. We are currently on £130 for the Memorial Hall – please help us get to £150!Many thanksSue H

With garden centres struggling to supply enough bedding plants, why not choose something from outside Rookery House?

There is currently an ever-changing selection of plants for sale outside Rookery House. This is a chance to do some stress-free, definitely socially-distanced shopping. Hardy perennials, annuals and even the odd tomato plant. All in aid of the Memorial Hall. Come and choose something, make a donation and ease our watering regime! If you have spare plants you want to pass on, please feel free to add to the selection.
ThanksSue H

Does anyone know where I can get cucumber plants (ideally the F1 greenhouse ones)?
I tried from seed, usually fine but no luck this year (the only year where they are a relative rarity!). I have tried Fairways and Homebase, but nothing there – does anyone know if Wyaston still has any, or Tissington?
Alternatively. does anyone have any they would be willing to sell?
Thanks in advance
Emma

Appeal to residents as Dales prepares for garden waste collection to restart
Derbyshire Dales District Council is appealing for residents’ continued patience and understanding when garden waste collections restart from Monday 1 June.
To ensure that rounds are completed and some households don’t miss out, no additional garden waste will be taken over and above the usual bin-load.
No more than five sacks will be taken in a single collection from households that use compostable sacks rather than bins.
The District Council agreed at an Emergency Committee meeting last week to share the cost with contractor Serco of extra vehicles and staff needed to restart garden waste collections.
Since the end of March the collections have been suspended to enable reduced crews due to coronavirus impacts to prioritise household waste and recycling rounds.
A District Council spokesperson said: “We know our residents absolutely understand that we are still in an emergency situation and that the restarted garden waste collections can only work efficiently if the catch-up happens gradually. That’s why we are appealing to households to only put out for collection the amount of garden waste they would in normal circumstances, ensuring that the bin lid is properly closed. We cannot take any additional garden waste right now.”
Residents can check on their collection date using the online postcode calendar at http://www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/whenismycollection
Food waste collections are currently fortnightly rather than weekly and will continue to happen with residents’ scheduled household waste collections.

Garden waste collections update
Garden waste collections could restart here in the Derbyshire Dales from 1 June if councillors approve recommendations being put to the District Council’s new Emergency Committee this Thursday (21 May).
The 6pm meeting will be broadcast live on our YouTube channel.

Our new Emergency Committee will meet for the first time next week to discuss measures that need to be put in place to enable garden waste collections to re-start in the district.
Green waste collections have been suspended during the lockdown to enable household waste and recycling collections to be prioritised due to the council’s waste and recycling contractor being impacted by coronavirus-related staffing issues.
Staff resources have been stretched not only by coronavirus shielding and self-isolation, but by social distancing requirements that mean bin crews are having to travel to locations in separate vehicles.
A report to next Thursday’s Emergency Committee – to be published on Monday – is likely to state that garden waste collections can only restart if the council is prepared to contribute towards the cost of additional agency staff.
The meeting will be broadcast live on the District Council’s YouTube channel.

Owing to current restrictions on gatherings and non-essential activities, and most importantly in the interest of everyone’s health and well-being, the PDHS has decided not to hold Open Gardens this year.
We are hopeful though and will continue to plan for the future. It may be that we hold a smaller event in the autumn and we will keep you updated. Feel free to join our group on Facebook so you can keep in touch with fellow gardeners and share photos of your activities as we are sure lots of you are enjoying the sun and spending time tending the first spring blooms.
Until then, keep safe and virus-free and thank you so much to everyone who has participated in the past.
On behalf of the PDHS Committee.

Friends of Pump hill have some loam left over. Please come and shovel your own if you would like some. Ideal opportunity if you are helping out at today’s activity morning.

Bill will finally throw in the trowel at Leatherbritches garden nursery next week, on Thursday 31st October…..
There are still some bits and bobs left – such as plants, pots, containers etc. and you won’t get a better deal anywhere else!
Ann and Bill would like to say a huge thanks to all their customers and everyone that has dealt with them over the last 20 years…..
Likewise, I am sure many of you would join me in saying a big thank you to Ann and Bill for providing such a lovely, local and friendly source of plants, pots, advice, ideas, Christmas trees as well as tea, coffee and biscuits….! My garden for one would not be the same without you both…..

We have a good amount of damsons available to pick for free if you’d like to give us a call. However, I would like to request in return that a donation be made to the Parwich Independant Welfare Fund.
Thanks,

There are lots of plants for sale at Church Farm in Creamery Lane. Some are on the verge at the house gable, but also lots are along the back of the house. There are kitchen garden plants, wild flowers, herbaceous plants, climbers and shrubs. I have potted on tomato plants left over from Open Gardens so they just need to be put in a sunny spot and watered.
If no one is about just put what you think is a fair price in the tin under the pallet. Unfortunately sales have been much slower than last year, we have so far just raised £18.50 to be split between the Carnival & Rec Committee and the Horticulture Soc. (This time last year we had raised some £160. It may be people are not noticing the plants behind the house.)
Money from further sales will go to support the Parish Council garden off Pump Hill. Everything must go.
