Warm up to energy bill savings – before it’s too late
Time is running out for Derbyshire Dales residents to take advantage of lofty savings on their energy bills.
In the past year Derbyshire Dales District Council has helped local people save over £43,000 in energy bills and is urging local householders and private tenants to sign up to a scheme for free and discounted loft insulation and cavity wall insulation.
Last autumn 326 Dales households prepared for winter and beat rising energy prices by applying for subsidised loft and cavity wall insulation, resulting in an annual CO2 saving of 220 Tonnes.
Chairman of Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Environment Committee, Councillor Steve Bull, said: “The recent weather, which has felt more like October than July, should prompt local people to prepare for winter now to save cash when you really need the energy.
“Funding for the free and discounted scheme the District Council runs in partnership with Warmstreets ends in December 2012, so our advice is call us now.”

A group within the History Society are collecting information on who lived where and when in the village. Please come and share what you know about the history of your home, or look at the 1843 Tithe Map and the nineteenth century censuses.

In our current unseasonal dry season, and with increasing concern about insurance issues, it has been pointed out to us that we may not think about trees in relation to our buildings insurance. Trees are a potential factor in subsidence but also failure to disclose ‘relevant’ information even if not relevant to a specific claim can invalidate your policy.

Just recently I have been renewing insurance policies for buildings in my ownership, and these days I have a little more time to study the ins and outs of all the excess paperwork the insurance companies send with your renewal notice. One thing to look out for, is when you accept their terms, conditions and quote you will also be accepting their PROPERTY OWNERS’ STATEMENT OF FACT which has more than one or two exclusions in there. One thing I picked up on, is the distance of mature trees from a building that are likely to cause Heave or Subsidence, (more…)

I have recently returned to the UK after spending 25 years in Europe and am looking for lodgings in the Parwich area, after falling in love with the place.
I am employed by a charitable organisation and am based in Derby: as I cannot afford to rent a property on my own I wondered if you know of anybody who would house share or take in a lodger. Rumour has it that the BBC programme Escape to the Country is in Parwich today. Apparently Fernlea is to feature as the ‘mystery house’ in a new episode to be broadcast in October.
Certainly it will get the property good coverage.

Selling your property: a cheaper alternative?

Half the houses for sale in Parwich are currently registered with the online estate agent Housesimple. One has already sold, subject to contract.
Nowadays, 80 to 90 per cent of houses are viewed by buyers online through portals such as Rightmove, Primelocation, Fish4homes, Zoopla and others, and this is changing the face of estate agency. Local estate agents are no longer the first port of call for a buyer; the internet is.
But if you want to put your house on the best internet sites, you can’t do so without going through an agent, which Housesimple will do for you. Local estate agents also put the houses on their books on Rightmove and Primelocation. The difference is in the price.
A house selling for £300,000 might have a local agent’s fee of £4,000. A house at £700,000 may attract a fee of £8,500 or more. On Housesimple, the fee is £425 + VAT in total, which is why half the properties in the village have now opted for the internet estate agent.
Who knows, you might even sell your house to someone else in the village. What’s the point in paying agents many thousands of pounds to do that, when you can get just about the same exposure for very little?

Jason and Emma, who ran the village shop until 2008, have decided to sell the property. It has received a change of use notice from the Peak Park, so there is now development potential for turning the former shop into accommodation.
