Children can try being a lead miner, meet characters from the past, and enjoy things that go boom, bang or squelch at a free archaeological family fun day at the 270-year-old Magpie Mine, Sheldon, on Saturday July 31, 10.30am-3pm.

Peak District National Park rangers and the Peak District Mines Historical Society are staging “Magpie Mayhem,” with activities for adults and children alike.

The event is part of the Festival of British Archaeology and National Parks Week, and will include a guided tour of the site by the National Park’s senior survey archaeologist, John Barnatt.

The Peak District Mines Historical Society, which owns and manages Magpie Mine, will display scale models and genuine mining artefacts to help explain the archaeology and will talk about their work on site.

National Park area ranger Lynn Burrow said: “Magpie Mine has a really colourful history, including conflict and tragedy in the 1830s as rival groups of miners tried to smoke each other out.  We’ll be helping families explore their local history with an interactive discovery trail, and children can become a lead miner, meet historical characters, make “bradder” hats and enjoy games and activities. Families can bring a picnic and make a day of it.”

No need to book, just turn up on the day.  Magpie Mine is a mile or so from Monyash, so about 20 minutes from Parwich.

Thanks to Shura Prince for contacting us with the following information:

My name is Shura Prince. I live at Alsop Moor, and I am doing a charity coffee morning on Saturday the 5th December at Alstonefield Village Hall, from 10am till 1pm.

There will be a Santa’s Grotto, face painting, tombola and a variety of stalls. All money raised is going to PACT (Parents Association for Children with Tumours and Leukaemia).

This is a charity close to my heart, as my daughter Evie had leukaemia when she was 6 weeks old. She is now 6 and is doing well. So I just want to give back something to the charity that helped me and my family through a tough time.

Ecton Mine

Thank you to Martin C for sending in this post.

ecton_3

I have just been down Ecton Copper Mine (near Hartington), on a trip organized by Alison from Parwich, for the Open University Geological Society.  Ecton was a very profitable mine in the 18th century, and the then owner, the Duke of Devonshire, used the profits to build the Buxton Crescent and the Stable block (Old Hospital).  We descended into Ecton Hill via 6 steep ladders into a maze of passageways and explored the deep mine just with torchlight.  It was a fascinating experience to witness the conditions in which our 18thcentury forebears had to work in – working several hundred feet down in damp conditions, with only a single candle for illumination. The mine is now run by Ecton Mine Educational Trust.  Further photos about the mine can be seen on the Peak District Mines Historical Society website and here.

New Sherwood Foresters Memorial

SF ColourThis afternoon (2pm Central European Time, i.e. 1pm BST) sees the unveiling of a new Sherwood Foresters Memorial at the Tyne Cot Cemetery in Belgium.  To see photographs of the stone being carved go to the WFR Museum website.

This Project has been led by Major John Cotterill MBE Mercian Regiment, Mr Cliff Housley Regimental Historian and Mr Eddie Edwards BEM Assistant Curator/Archivist The WFR Museum (Sherwood Foresters Collection):

In the Great War 11,409 men of the Sherwood Foresters died on active service, the vast majority of them on the Western Front. Despite the counties of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire having made this great sacrifice the Regiment is unique in having no lasting Memorial anywhere in France or Belgium.

140,000 men served in the ranks of the Regiment’s 33 Battalions and of the 74 Infantry Regiments then in existence only three won more Victoria Crosses than the Sherwood Foresters in the war. Nine of the Foresters 10 Great War VCs were won on or over the Western Front.

This email was sent to parwich@hotmail.co.uk, and, although the Wirksworth Festival is outside our area, we thought someone might be interested in being involved:

Are you ready for your close-up? Would you like to have a starring role as part of an artwork at Wirksworth Festival 2009?

Video artist Phil Lambert is making a new piece of work for Wirksworth Festival 2009, which will be shown in the window of the Bookshop, and on display through this year’s Festival, 11-26 September… and he needs your help! He wants local people to take a starring role in the project by volunteering to appear in his new work. If you want to take part then you only need to give up half an hour of your time on either Saturday 15 or Sunday 16 August for filming at the Parish Room in Wirksworth. If you would like to take part then contact Phil direct by email at pwrlambert@hotmail.co.uk.

While we are away on our summer holiday, my sister and her two kids will be having their summer holiday at our house.  Her kids are 18 months and 3 and a half years old.  As we arrived here when our kids were a bit older than that, I don’t know all the best local places to take small children.  Carsington and Chatsworth are the two obvious ones I can think of but does anyone have some more suggestions?  Other ideas are welcome too – for example, good places to take kids to eat.  Thank you, Lynne.

Cracking Easter holiday events at Peak District Visitor Centres

Spring Fun Days at Peak District National Park visitor centres will show how nature stages its own Easter egg-stravaganza in the wild.

Children can join in free fun activities while learning how to protect wild birds and other creatures at this crucial time of year for raising young in the national park. Games, competitions, painting, mask-making and nature walks will all be on offer. Along the way, youngsters can learn the importance of keeping dogs on leads so they do not disturb nests, cutting down on fire-risks and caring for the countryside.

Spring Fun Days are being held at: (more…)

At the end of the day, just two votes separated our winner from our runner-up – but there can only be one winner, and we can now announce that the honour goes to…

(…long pause…)

(…drum roll…)

The Coach and Horses at Fenny Bentley.

The Coach and Horses, Fenny Bentley.

With its award-winning reputation for consistently tasty food (using locally sourced produce wherever possible), served cheerfully and efficiently in pleasant surroundings, the Coach and Horses has become a perennial favourite for Parwichians who fancy a change of scenery.

The pub also offers a warm welcome to non-dining drinkers, in the cosy main bar area. (We particularly like perching around the high, round table in the far right hand corner.) The Marstons beer is also extremely well-kept, making this pub a great “all-rounder” for drinkers and diners alike.

Congratulations to the Coach and Horses!

The Coach and Horses, Fenny Bentley.

And finally… no round-up of local country pubs would be complete without a reminder of everyone’s favourite public house of them all.    The Sycamore is a true village local, which really does go the extra mile to serve its community – as demonstrated at the Great British Pub Awards 2008, lest we forget – and we are very lucky to have it.

Honorary mentions also go to the Parwich Royal British Legion – not a “public house” as such, but another fine place in which to drink and socialise.

After all, you know what they say:
“East, West, home is best!”

Our runner-up position is hereby awarded to The Duke of York at Elton – an establishment which takes a very different approach to our third placed pub, offering a truly traditional Derbyshire drinking experience.

The Duke of York, Elton.

Here’s what some of our readers had to say about it:

Original village pub. No fancy frills and trappings and even has its own village idiot! Try a Sunday Lunch visit.

It is refreshing to go to a pub where you can just enjoy a quiet pint of cask ale, without being pushed from pillar to post by people serving pub grub. The Barley Mow (Kirk Ireton) is also what I would regard as a ‘traditional’ pub, but in my opinion is nudged into second by the friendly, warm atmosphere at The Duke of York.
