A message from Andrew and Rachel

Thankyou so much for all your cards, messages, phone calls, visits and offers of practical help. We have been overwhelmed by all your expressions of love and support, and they have been a great comfort to Andrew, and me.

What a wonderful village we live in, Parwich is a very special place and you are all very special people. Thankyou, thankyou for your friendship and for helping Andrew through this very difficult time. He has had his first ten days of chemotherapy, with all its side effects, but he is gradually starting to eat again and to feel a little better. It lifts his spirits every day when I take him your cards and messages, and share the life of the village with him. All being well, he will be allowed out of hospital for a week or so before starting the second month of chemotherapy, possibly next week.

We send you all our love and so many thanks. Rachel.

Lionel Webster was brought up in Parwich, and always had a friendly word for customers in his jeweller’s shop in Ashbourne Market Place.

Please Sponsor Colin

Colin Beesley is doing a 10km run at Larwood, Worksop on 9th May to raise money for an all terrain wheelchair for our friend’s nephew Benjamin. Benjamin is 10 years old. He suffers form Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a chronic degenerative disorder that occurs in about 1 in 3500 male births. Benjamin can still walk short distances but for anything else he needs a wheelchair. His NHS one will only operate on smooth flat surfaces which rules out a lot of the activites he still enjoys.
You can either sponsor Colin directly, by contacting his agent Rebecca (390318), or online at Just Giving .  This final link goes straight through to Ben’s page.  Thanks for your support

Dorothy was interviewed and we are expecting a small spread to be published next Wednesday. Can’t wait!

Alsop Hall – a historical query.

We have received the following enquiry from A. Jackson, regarding the history of Alsop Hall.

I have a query about Alsop Hall and the family that resided there.

I recently bought two books, both with inscriptions on the inside. The first (called Lost Gip by Hesba Stretton) has the following inside: “To John, from Mrs Heald, Alsop Hall, Derbyshire“. Could you tell me anything about both these names? Probably written around the 1900s (due to the age of the book).

The second book I believe to be from the same place, as they were purchased from the same stall, are the same age and by the same publisher. The second is inscribed: “Awarded to Jane Lamb for lessons and attendance in the year 1900.” Again (although the books may in fact not be linked), could anyone tell me anything of this Jane Lamb?

I realise family histories are hard to track, but I’m intrigued to know something of these three people: John, Mrs Heald and Jane Lamb.

I look forward to hearing from you!

If you are able to assist with this enquiry, please leave a comment or e-mail the blog team: parwich@hotmail.co.uk.

Unsung Heroes

As the snow recedes, it is worth reflecting on those people who have kept things going during our recent spot of weather.

We have just received a note of appreciation for amazing milklady Christine G, who did not miss a day in her deliveries with a lorry full of highly spillable milk! We really don’t know quite how she did it, but her reliable service is very much appreciated.

Let us know of any other people who went beyond the call of duty.

A message from Simon.

Dear Friends,

I have now finally retired from the Royal Mail and thought it a good time to write to you all.

Barbara & I would like to thank you for the warm welcome you gave us at the Carol service in December.

I am overwhelmed with the collection you made along with the book showing all your kind wishes. I certainly wasn’t expecting that. I have yet to decide what I’m going to buy.

That you all very much. I wish you all the best and a happy new year.

“Whole new ball game for John.”

Thanks to Matt H for alerting us to this story (and photo) in the current edition of the Ashbourne News Telegraph.

The man responsible for turning up Ash Wednesday’s Shrovetide ball is in fact Matt’s uncle: John Harrison, who (along with Matt’s late father and aunt Christine) was born and lived for many years in Ballidon.

John is also responsible for making the balls for each year’s Shrovetide matches, spending about 15 hours on the construction of each ball.

There’s more on next year’s Shrovetide matches here and here.

Simon our postman will be doing his round for the last time on 2nd January after 11 years delivering the post to the people of Parwich. We could not have wished for a more dedicated and helpful person to deliver our mail. Through rain, snow and shine, Simon has always looked after us with a smile and a wave. We will be very sorry to see him go.

It was wonderful therefore to have the opportunity this afternoon to thank him and his wife Barbara.

PARWICH LADIES TRIUMPHANT

After years of honing set plays and individual passing skills the Parwich Ladies Netball Team have finally reached the dizzying heights of CHAMPIONS OF THE LEEK INDOOR WINTER LEAGUE!!!!!!

The season has been one of nail biting end to end matches with great athleticism and stamina being demanded from all players. The post baby tummies have been replaced with 6 packs. Explosive muscle power in the legs has resulted in some very shapely calves. Excessive use of over head and chest passes has caused a certain pertness in the bosom which can only be of benefit for the dress choice for the prize giving ceremony!

The defence of Sarah (the long legged blonde), Nia (the aging mother of 4) and Alex (the bouncy night nurse) have gelled to become a formidable force. Only the Leek Hockey Club Girls caused pain to the threesome as they dared to take on the blocking techniques.

Sandra (the speedy over head Queen) continued to whizz from end to end bringing defence and attack together despite her variations in hair arrangements.

The shooters Jannette (who really can get it in from anywhere!) and Ruth (the most versatile player ever) have been named as THE BEST SHOOTERS IN THE LEAGUE. For every 100 shots at least 95 were guaranteed goals. Those that missed were put down to interference from the rowdy crowds that gathered to watch our performances.

WA is the position played by Wendy (the most graceful and gentle player ever) and she calmly fed the ball into Ruth and Jan without ever looking flustered in the 4 months of play.

People of Parwich – you are privileged to have such sporting excellence in your midst. The team are now carbo loading for a month before taking on All Comers next year.

A big Thank you must go to the staff at Leek for organising and umpiring the League. Also on the occasions we have needed to play reserves we are indebted to Jo (from the Pink Ladies) and Pip ( who sponsors us) for managing to just fit in and play our game.

Angela Dodds

Angela Dodds died recently in Belgium where she has lived for a number of years.  Angela spent her childhood in Parwich, her family living at Hallcliffe from the 1940s to the 1960s.

The Dodds family were an important part of village life and are still remembered by many locally with affection.  Angela’s parents, Major Dodds and Lady Crompton-Inglefield, are buried together in Parwich Churchyard beneath the chestnut tree near the east end of the Church.

Our sympathy and best wishes goes out to all her family.
