Yesterday 29 of us  attended probably the most important course in our lives – learning how to save a child’s life – that child could be yours!

Course was supported by the Charity ‘Just A Few Minutes’, organized by Alan Gibson consultant neonatologist at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, and staff from Sheffield & Chesterfield Hospitals. We were dealing with the most precious of things, a child’s life, but never has a course seems so compelling and interesting. Considering the seriousness of the subject, at times we were in fits of laughter, especially when faced with some of the ‘real life’ scenarios and the initial ways in which we tried to deal with the situation.  Click on any of the photos to enlarge. Pilates and New Year’s resolutions!
pilates06A number of people have mentioned to me that they would like to start Pilates in the New Year. Whilst there are a few spaces available for both classes at present, could I ask people to e mail Tricia direct to reserve a space to avoid disappointment! triciadurdey@uwclub.net. The classes are on a Wednesday 6pm-7pm and 7.15pm – 8.15pm. They run in half termly blocks and payment of £7 per class is made for a block of classes (usually 5 so a payment of £35). Concessions are available. Those who are already signed up for the classes will automatically be allocated a space in the next set unless they tell Tricia to the contrary. Thanks Rebecca.

pilates1  A relaxing & fun way to spend an evening.

Parwich & District Local History Society’s last Newsletter came out in February 2007, however they are now re-launching it in a new guise as their News Quarterly.  (It should be born in mind that a local history society’s idea of news, might not be as current as the more general reader’s, for example the last Newsletter reported that readers had missed the deadline to object to a proposed new road through Parwich, by only 197 years.)

All the Society’s members are being contacted to establish whether they want to continue to recieve mailings in the time honoured paper form, or whether they want to go electronic.

The News Quarterly will also be on-line at the Society’s website.  The first two issues, now on-line, are accessible to all.  Once the Society’s members have indicated how they want to receive their mail shots, future issues of the News Quarterly will be accessible to the members only for the first year following publication, after which they will be released for full public consumption.

To see the first two issues of the Parwich & District Local History Society News Quarterly click on the respective contents lists below:

News Quarterly 1      News Quarterly 2

Anyone who regards themselves as a member of Parwich & District Local History Society (even if your fees are not up to date) but has not received a mailing including Issue 1 of the new News Quarterly by 30th November please let the Society know on parwichhistory@hotmail.com.

Yesterday’s Local History Society trip was a great success.  We started at Middleton Top, where the stationary engine was working.  When the Cromford & High Peak Railway (now the High Peak Trail) was build in the late 1820s, to join the Cromford Canal to the Peak Forest Canal at Whaley Bridge, they did not have a set idea of what a railway should be.  (more…)

Photos have been added to this post (Tues 23rd Sept)

Thanks to Val S for another literary masterpiece as well as champion tennis player.

I knew I was in trouble when I woke to the sound of Cher from my bedside radio….yes I KNOW our love won’t pay the rent but neither will it get a tennis tournament and end of season BBQ organised…..

Glynis (aka Drummond G) called, she’ll get rolls, beer and stuff, the Linnells are on sausages (obviously) and Colin B is organising the tennis; I get to clean and scrub two rusty dirty barbeques and plan some stuff for the annual dinner, my cup overfloweth.

All ready by 1pm. 24 highly motivated players were confronted by yet another cunning competition format, this time devised by Colin B……….And when I’m sad, you’re a clown …….. ….24 players – 3 Drummonds, 3 Smiths, 3 Linnells, 3 Beesleys, 2 Coates, 2 Yarletts, 2 Watsons, a single Fentem, a Chadfield (well done Sandra!) a Bunting, the vicar, a bloke called Richard and me – making 12 couples…I got you to hold my hand……

WI & the Everest Marathon

Being one of the three men that attended this talk, I can uncategorically say that those of you who did not go on Thursday evening missed an excellent talk and some incredible photos.  Clare Shea-Simonds, an experienced athlete, has recently won a European silver medal for Triathlon.  She and her husband, with some 80 other westerners and Nepalese, entered last year’s Everest Marathon, and Parwich WI reaped the benefit of having her mother on their committee.

Amazing though the challenge of a marathon starting near Everest Base Camp at 17,000 feet is, the challenge of walking to the start is as impressive.  Described as the worlds most impressive race, it has been run 12 times since 1987.  Clare talked of Nepal, the poverty (the average income is around £125 a year) and the people.  (more…)

(SECOND ONLY TO WIMBLEDON) – SATURDAY

The day dawned – surprisingly brightly given the recent dampness.

This was the penultimate event of the Tennis Club’s year, the climax of their competitive year, the pinnacle of competitive ambition, the epitome of competitive standards. At stake was the honour of having your name in gold leaf on the pavilion honours board for eternity.

This is a day for finely tuned athletes, the light of foot, the stern of heart, those who care and the masochists who routinely subject themselves to ritual humiliation on an annual basis.  This is not a day for the lily-livered, for those who play for enjoyment or those with the good sense to recognise their limitations. Today we were gladiators!

There were two competitions – ‘one for the ladies’ and ‘one for the gentlemen’.

Parwich Flower & Vegetable Show

The Horticultural Society offers its commiserations to all effected by the flood, and hopes you get sorted out soon.  It was impressive to see the Shop/Pub trading more or less as usual at the same time as the clean up operation was going on.  They certainly deserve to do well in the Best Community Pub award in ten days or so.  Well the Show must go on.

If you have any flowers, fruit or vegetables left (at least Mike and Dot don’t need to pick theirs, the flood has spread them across the lawn) please bring you entries along between 8am and 11am on Sunday morning (7th Sept).  If you crop has been washed away come along at 3pm for the auction of produce so you can still stock up your freezer.

Thank you to Parwich & District Horticultural Society for the following:

This year we revived our Hanging Basket Competition, which fell into abeyance some years ago. This was prompted by the donation of a Trophy to the Society in memory of the late Abel Shipley. Abel was born in 1915 at Warslow, but his family moved to The Croft in Parwich when he was three months old. He lived in Parwich the rest of his life, and retained an impressive memory of village affairs right up to his death. Many will have very fond memories of Abel.

As a child Abel worked on the family allotment behind their house, now gone unfortunately, and “every fortnight my mother walked me, aged 5, over to Warslow to clean and wash for my grandfather and uncle and then walk back again. This took us through Alsop, Gypsy Bank and Beresford Dale. (more…)

On Friday 17 of us set off to the RHS Tatton Park Show, it was a great day out, very warm and thankfully dry.  There was loads to see, the most amazing displays in the marquees, including vegetables, plants & flower arranging.  Outside there were the show gardens, back to back gardens & formal beds – some take a little while to get your head around.  There is also all the paraphernalia that goes with gardens, we came away with a greenhouse!!  Thanks to Dot for organising this trip for the Horticultural Society.

The Local History Society’s visit last night to Arkwright’s Mill at Cromford was a great success.  There was a tour of the mill site, an organ recital in St Mary’s Church with its amazing Victorian wall paintings and coffee in Willersley Castle.

The Arkwright Society has achieved a great deal, but it is vital they are supported to complete the restoration of this World Heritage Site, in particular the internationally important first mill.

More information and further photos will be available, in the hopefully not too distant future, through our History Society Newsletters.

Photographing seventeen gardens within the space of two and a half hours was always going to be a tall order. For Kevin S., who was forced to decline numerous offers of liquid refreshment along the way in the name of duty, completing the circuit represented an almost superhuman feat of endurance.

Kevin also found time to snap most (or was it all?) of the entries in this year’s scarecrow competition. Sincere apologies to anyone whose scarecrow remained undiscovered.

Despite the cloudy skies and the heavy winds, the gardens of Parwich looked truly magnificent this afternoon. Many thanks to all who took part, to all who visted, and of course to the Horticultural Society for arranging yet another successful and enjoyable event.

In the gallery which follows, our seventeen show gardens are displayed in numerical order, according to the official map: The School, School View, Stable Cottage, Wheatsheaf Cottage, Pool Croft, Town Head, Parwich Hall, Gardener’s Cottage, Knob Hall, Creamery Cottage, Orchard Farm, 6 Church Walk, Church Cottage, Flaxdale, The Fold, Walnut Cottage and Brook Close Farm.

At least one image from each garden has been chosen; usually there are two, and occasionally there are three. Again, our apologies to those gardens who received somewhat short shrift; time was very limited, and lighting conditions were far from ideal.

Our 2008 gallery starts “below the fold”. As always, clicky-clicky to make it biggy-biggy!
