The sun shone brightly on Wakes this year, making for a wonderful fancy dress and float parade. Congratulations to the committee for making it all happen, and well done to everybody who took part.
We hope you enjoy this gallery of 40 images from today’s festivities. All the photos can be enlarged by clicking on them.
Odd Fellows March 2010: Part Two.

The Odd Fellows march continued its way through the village, with further refreshment stops at Croft Avenue, Nethergreen and The Fold. Before leaving Croft Avenue, the band made a special detour up to Andrew and Rachel’s house: a kind gesture that was much appreciated by all. After leaving The Fold, it was time for a three-course roast beef lunch in the Memorial Hall, served up by Val K and her team.
Here’s our second photo gallery; please click on each picture to enlarge it.

On page 13 of this week’s Ashbourne News Telegraph, there’s a splendid half-page advertisement feature dedicated to this weekend’s Parwich Open Gardens, and to the Wakes Week activities which commence at the end of the month. Containing a full preview of the forthcoming activities, and accompanied by quotes from various Parwichians, it’s well worth reading. Copies are available from the shop, or you can read the e-edition by following this link.
Two page Wakes feature in this week’s Stunner

This week’s Ashbourne News Telegraph is available in the Sycamore Shop or on-line. Local interest articles include:
- p. 4 £90,000 grants could make village hall dream a reality is an article on the recent grants towards the Memorial Hall redevelopment project, including the Peak Park Sustainable Development Grant, that mean we are now well within £100,000 of reaching our £868,000 target. One of the photos taken in the pub is in the paper and another can be seen on the paper’s website.
- p. 11 An Alsop barn burst into flames on Crosslow Lane last Friday as the high temperatures caused the hay stored there to ignite. Firefighters from Ashbourne and Buxton attended.
- p.20 & 21 A Barrowload of Fun at Village Wakes is a two page spread on Parwich Wakes 2009. With photos from the Saturday, the Hill Race and a special focus on the Wheelbarrow Race, it is well worth looking at (click on the image below and go p.20 to see the photos published in the paper). The paper’s website also has a short slide show of the Wheelbarrow Race. Don’t forget there are lots more Wakes photos here at parwich.org.
Look out for tomorrow’s Stunner

What a fantastic Wakes week!

What a fantastic Wakes week this year! Really good turn outs and great participation, and marvellous weather. The only event cut short was the Children’s Sports, and even then we had the compensation of some dramatic cloudscapes.
A massive thank you to the Carnival & Recreation Committee and the other organisers for their generous commitment of time and energy.
Here is a look back over the seven days as seen through the eyes of extremely popular parwich.org. Just over 8,000 page views this week alone! Photos and links to the week’s events…. (more…)
Friday’s Fun – Balls, Ferrets & “Horses”

This post and the photos don’t do justice to what was a really good, well attended and excellently organised series of events, nonetheless…
Wakes Friday hosted a “Race Night Triathlon” involving balls, ferrets and “horses”.
The evening’s activities began at Pump Hill with the Ball Race at 7.00 pm sharp. This was followed by the Race Night at the Legion (including the Thoroughbred Ferret Furlong & the Legion Grand National).

It was a hot evening and the crowds gathered in anticipation of this year’s strongest man competition….
Twelve fearless competitors of all shapes and sizes gathered to face five gruelling tests of strength and stamina. The twelve included two of the entrants from last year’s competition, a couple of new competitors, and a number of familiar faces from the area and previous Strong Man events. This year’s competitors (in no particular order) were:

Hill Race 2009

Thank you to Graham, our roving reporter for this evening:
No Haile Gebrselassie ( -spell that without Google!), no Ron Hill, no Roberto Buntingo, no Paula R (she told us the lack of course toilets prevented an appearance this year) – no matter – 80 of the region’s best runners (and me) lined up for the annual Parwich Hill Race this evening.
The weather was warm and sticky but much more pleasant than last years deluge.
Even if I wasn’t a keen runner (enthusiasm here being a definite talent substitute), the Hill Race night would be one of my favourites of Wakes week. With the fair in full swing, and crowds congregating on the streets around the pub and the green, it tends to maintain a good natured carnival atmosphere which is starting to be lost on the evening of Wakes Saturday, (which I find is becoming sadly marred by the intimidating groups of marauding binge drinking youth’s largely from outside the village smashing glass, throwing firework’s and racing cars). Children’s races – Monday night – a scorcher…….

Thank you to our roving reporter for the evening Nia:
It all started well, with Dennis, missing his usual side kick – Brian- getting the races off to a flying start at bang on 6.30pm. Children were clutching their brown envelopes of money and sucking on revolting looking purple chews with more additives in them than a bag of candy floss from the fair, by the time the roving reporter made it down to the sports ground…..
The birth explosion in Parwich around the millennium meant the tape holders had to work doubly hard as heats had to be run before the finalists could be decided. The ‘smarter’ children quickly realised they needed to ensure they got in the right heat in order to guarantee a place in the final. For the boys that meant avoiding Jack G. and Jacob B. and the girls had to avoid Bethany F. These 3 youngsters were obviously under strict instructions to bring home to the dosh as they were flying down the home straight into 1st place in every race they entered.(unless it was against each other of course….) Do you have any Wakes photos that we could add to the blog? Or any Wakes photos that we could use in a caption competition? Please send them to our email address – parwich@hotmail.co.uk. If we get inundated, we may not be able to post them all but will post as many as we can. We would also like photos from the campsite games if anyone has any. Thank you.
