  Update from your local officer

At the moment our area continues to have a low number of crimes and incidents being reported to Police. We have had our most recent Community Forum, and have a new concern raised by the public to concentrate on. Some work has been done in relation to road safety issues, again some items as a result of concerns raised by yourselves.

  • One offence that isn’t that common – bedsheets were stolen from a washing line at Sandybrook between 6pm and 7pm, on Thursday 25th June 2009.
  • A Mountain bike was also stolen from visitors to a Camp Site at Sandybrook. A securing lock was broken between 1am and 8am, on Sunday 12th July 2009, and the bike taken.
  • More bikes were taken on the 17th July.
  • We have also had a couple of bikes taken from outside houses on the edge of Ashbourne, so please put your bikes away, out of sight and locked up.
  • Again at Sandybrook, on 30th July 2009, between 4.50pm and 6 pm, access was gained to an isolated house on Spend Lane, and a Laptop computer stolen.
  • An offence of Criminal Damage was committed between 8.00pm on Saturday 27th June 2009 and 00.50am the following morning. A vehicle parked in Parwich village had some windows and wing mirrors smashed.
  • Another unusual incident occurred at Alsop en le Dale on Friday 3rd July 2009. Entry was gained to a barn and hay was set alight between 4am and 4.30am. Both Fire and Police Services attended.
  • Sometime between 10pm, 10th July 2009 and 10 am the following morning, a garage / barn door was forced at Long Rose Lane, Kniveton and a bike, strimmer, and other items stolen.
  • Long Rose Lane was again visited by thieves on 16th August 2009 when a Land Rover was broken into and items of clothing taken.
  • At Tissington, between 11am on 23rd July and 11am 24th July 2009 a painted board advertising the local butchers was stolen from the roadside. Fenny Bentley was targeted on the night of the 6th August 2009 when lead roofing material was stolen from a site to the side of the A515. (more…)

Today Michael Stokes of MDS Stained Glass installed the new stained glass window, designed by David Pilkington, in the Lady Chapel. This exquisite window commemorates James Hetherington (2002-2004) and his great-grandfather Joseph Thornton (1903-1992). The location of the window is particularly appropriate as it is next to the Millennium windows, also designed by David Pilkington, to celebrate all the children living in the parish in 2000.

Services by gas light

Thank you to Martin C for pointing out that there is still a memento of the carbide gaslights in Parwich Church, namely the gas meter.

gas metre

A meter suggests that the Church would have been charged for the gas they used.  Does anyone have any information on who installed and maintained the carbide generator on the village hall site?  Was it run by the community or on a semi-commercial basis?

Also does anyone have a photo of the gas lights in the Church? ( In ‘The Spirit of Parwich’ book there is a photograph taken around 1906 when the Church was still lit by oil lamps.)

Pilates Classes

I am very relieved to have found a new teacher to take over this term! Her name is Georgie Barnes and she is studying with the same teacher who trained Tricia, so her approach will be similar. As she is less experienced than Tricia the class fee will be lower at £5.50 per session. She is travelling quite a distance to come here and I’m afraid the luxury of having it on our doorstep means we have to cover travelling time and petrol etc. in the fee.

She is on holiday in September so the first class will be Wednesday 30th September. Caroline Rodgers has kindly agreed that we can use the school. The classes run from 6 – 7pm and 7.15 – 8.15pm. There will be 4 classes in the first block before half term; 30th September, 7th October, 14th October and 21st October, with £22 to pay up front on the 30th.

Please could all existing participants e-mail me to confirm they will be continuing. There are some spaces for anyone wanting to join, and as you will only need to commit to 4 classes in the first instance it is an ideal time to try and see if it is for you! Everyone will need to complete Georgie’s own health form which I will email, once I’ve heard from you. Please contact Rebecca on 318 or rebeccaofparwich@aol.com

Implications of B5056 closure?

We received the following email today.  We have forwarded it to the County Council, but if you have any other thoughts or comments you want passing on either add a comment below or email parwich@hotmail.co.uk or contact Highways directly:

As I was driving to work this morning, it occurred to me that, now the main road to Ashbourne is closed, we could have some real problems this winter, as I don’t believe the back roads are gritted in the winter?

If the road is not gritted over the winter, you can guarantee that there are going to be quite a few accidents. Is there anything as a community we can do to insist, for safety reasons, that the local lanes are gritted?

The Derbyshire County Council website shows Dam Lane through Alsop en le Dale as a route that will be gritted as is the lane through Netherton (Nether Bradbourne), though the Dale and Pikehall routes are not included in the gritting schedule.  Click here to check which routes are to be gritted.

We have asked Highways to confirm which local roads are to be gritted. What are your thoughts on which lanes need gritting during the B5056 closure?
