BBC in Parwich tomorrow

The BBC’s East Midlands Politics Show are sending a reporter to Parwich on Wednesday morning to find out about our ideas on local democracy.  Readers of PARWICH.ORG will know that Defra are conducting a consultation on direct elections to the National Park Authorities, and that there is local interest in this issue.

Parwich Parish Council support some form of direct elections to the Peak Park Authority as do 90% of those who responded to our on-line poll.  Any further comments added below will be passed on to the BBC reporter.

Problems with your water?

Owing to a burst at Knockerdown, water supplies to Parwich have been temporarily cut off.

Severn Trent Water tell us that they are working on the problem as a matter of priority, and that they hope to resume normal services “within the next couple of hours”.

(We called them at 16:15, so that would make for an estimate of 18:15.)

The 24 hour emergency contact number for Severn Trent Water is 0800 783 4444.

Update – 17:30: The water supply appears to have returned, but still at a low pressure.

Update – 18:00: Everything seems normal again.

It’s Wednesday; it’s the Stunner

When I was about 10 my grandfather said when you get older time speeds up.  I did not take him seriously, but though I still have 30 years to reach the age my grandfather was when he made this remark, it can’t be Wednesday again already, can it?  Well, if not my Ashbourne News Telegraph has come early.

Here are the items related to our immediate area:

Credit Crunch impact on Peak Villages

Thank you to Lynne G for sending this in.

I was watching BBC breakfast just after 7.20 this morning when they were doing a series on how people are coping with the credit crunch (it’s probably one of those items that gets repeated a few times through the whole programme). They said that tomorrow (Wednesday) the item will be coming from the Peak District where they will be seeing how small villages are coping with the credit crunch. Could be interesting – let’s hope they decide to come to Parwich!

This afternoon’s meeting with Justine Ball, our grants officer for the Big Lottery Fund, was very positive. She met with several of the Project Team: Mike Gerard-Pearse, Brian Beasley, Val Stevenson, Nick Stevenson and Peter Trewhitt. First she looked round the Memorial Hall and the site, and then we moved to the School to access their internet and projection facilities.

We discussed the consultation process, the additional future uses of the Hall that have been identified (e.g. after-school activities and adult education classes) and our strategies to obtain matched funding / in kind donations. Some additional detail was required and several of our outcome measures need rewording to fit into their format, but overall Justine was very complimentary of high standard and thoroughness of our application.  (more…)

Many congratulations to Esther Tyson, our recent artist addition to the village (see previous post).

She has won not one but two(!) prestigious awards for her art work, which are:

The RSPB Award for “Bullfinch Study” and the Capmark Europe Art Award (first prize) for “Early beginnings – Moorhen nest building”.

Interestingly, the Moorhen picture (see below) was based on Esther’s studies of the Parwich village pond.

Both awards were presented by Germaine Greer at the Society of Wildlife Artists Annual Exhibition 2008 at the Mall Galleries, London on the 23rd September (see photo below).

Order magazines at the Sycamore

Janet asked us to let people know that they can order their magazines via the Shop at the Sycamore.  Either call in or phone Janet on 390 212.

Also last Saturday the Pub was featured in the Derby Evening Telegraph referring back to its winning the Best Community Pub Award in September:

Another Derbyshire pub which has stayed successful despite the trade crisis is the Sycamore Inn, in Parwich.  It scooped two gongs at this year’s Great British Pub Awards, for East and West Midlands Pub of the Year and Community Pub of the Year.

Janet Gosling, who has run the pub for eight years, said the business had stayed central to the village community.  In March, she and her partner, Stephen Conway, opened a shop in the pub, selling vegetables, newspapers and household goods.  (more…)

Vicar to move to Nottingham

It is with much sadness that I have announced that we will be moving from Parwich in February – I have been asked to be priest in charge of three churches in the centre of Nottingham.

St. Mary’s is situated in the Lace Market; St. Peter’s is in the heart of the shopping area, next to Marks and Spencer’s, and All Saints is near to the Arboretum and to Trent University.  Our years in Parwich have been wonderful in so many ways, but working in the heart of a major city will also offer some splendid opportunities.

I expect that we will leave Parwich in early February – my licensing service in Nottingham is on Sunday 22nd February at 3.00 pm.   The process of finding a new vicar for Parwich will involve the drawing up of a profile of the group of five parishes, which will be put to possible applicants.  This will be overseen by the bishop and his colleagues, but the main work on the profile needs to be done here.

At least it’s not too far from here – do come and visit!   Details of the parish are at www.nottinghamchurches.org

Denise’s Sponsored SkyDive!

Congratulations to Denise, and thank you to the Professor for sending this in:

She’s Done It! Denise’s Sponsored SkyDive! She’s a Star!

If you cast your minds back to July, many of you will have filled in Sponsorship Forms for Denise’s Skydive in aid of the Derby City General Hospital Breast Cancer Clinic.

On 19 July we went out to Langar airfield (between Nottingham and Grantham – and the home of the British Parachute Schools Skydiving Centre). The winds blew and blew, and if a jump had been made Denise would probably have landed in the Netherlands. We waited all day, and eventually returned disconsolate (to drown our sorrows in a pub in Markeaton).

Since then a combination of dreadful weather and domestic problems intervened to make a jump impossible, but on Tuesday 16 September we were told that Wednesday weather would be ideal – we should get there as early as possible. So we turned up at 10.30 – only to find mist and a very low cloud-base which would make tandem jumps for starters unsafe. The day went on and on.

Thank you to Gareth Butterfield of the Ashbourne News Telegraph for alerting us to this item.  Although outside our immediate area it may be of interest to our readers and could have future implications for within the Park.

Yesterday the Planning Inspectorate over turned Derbyshire Dales District Council’s refusal of a commercial wind farm on Carsington Pastures overlooking Carsington Water.  West Coast Energy now have the go ahead to build four large wind turbines.  Details of the appeal can be seen at the District Council Website and the Planning Inspector’s decision can be see at their website (with a bit of searching).

It is perhaps surprising that this got the go ahead in such a conspicuous and archaeologically important site, though the Government is working to facilitate the planning process for alternative energy installations.  Just outside the National Park’s boundary it is interesting to speculate how this will impact on the PDNPA’s reluctance to allow even small domestic wind turbines.

Thank you to Chris Elton for drawing the following to our attention. Defra (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) has issued a consultation document on the idea of setting up direct elections to National Park Authorities. The Defra website says:

Consultation on Direct Elections to English National Park and Broads Authorities
This consultation invites your views on the principle of Direct Elections to the Authorities and Parish Council Members on the Broads Authority.

Parliamentary consideration of the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006 and the Broads Bill 2007 has resulted in an ongoing issue about direct elections to the National Park and Broads Authorities. As a result, the Government is undertaking an open consultation to seek views from its stakeholders to explore whether directly elected members would aid or hinder the decision-making process and/or strategic functioning of National Park and Broads Authorities. It wishes to give its stakeholders the opportunity to evaluate the relevant issues and in order to inform this thinking, those issues are set out in the linked consultation document. It simply sets out the issues for information purposes only without any views or recommendations.

Comments on these proposals are invited by Friday 28 November 2008. They should be posted or e-mailed to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs at the following address:

Alasdair Grant, National Parks Policy and Sponsorship Branch, Zone 1/03, Temple Quay House, 2 The Square, Temple Quay, Bristol, BS1 6EB
Or email: NNPAMembership@defra.gsi.gov.uk

As residents of a National Park we are undoubtedly stakeholders. We suggests that as well as contacting Defra directly with your views it may be worth adding your comments below so that the Parish Council and/or the Village Action Group has some idea of the the community’s views as a whole.

What the papers say

Today’s Ashbourne News Telegraph (10th Sept 2008) unsurprisingly focuses on last weekend’s flooding in the area.

  • p.3 Of the various articles on the flooding we are mentioned under the heading “Chaos and destruction“.  The article describes and pictures (the photograph used came from our post) the damage to our roads and paths and includes a short interview with Janet at the Sycamore.  (The paper also warns more heavy rain is expected tomorrow.)
  • p.4 The Comment section comments favourably on PARWICH.ORG (see post below for the full text).
  • p.6 Derbyshire Cyberscouts receive £500 for new equipment.
  • p.15 The Hug, a sculpture representing Ashbourne Shrovetide Football is to be unveiled at 10-30am on Saturday at the Waterside Park development (i.e. in front of Homebase).
  • p.19 Ashbourne Churches Together is launching an appeal to help those affected by the floods in India where some 2,000 people have died.  Donations can be sent to Elizabeth Hurfurt, 81 Derby Road, Ashbourne, DE6 1BH, cheques payable to ACT Patna Partnership.  For more information contact the Vicar on 01335 390 226.

The Comment section in today’s Ashbourne News Telegraph (10th Sept 2008) mentions very favourably PARWICH.ORG, so we thought our readers might like to see this in full:

IF YOU haven’t already done this, and you have the necessary facilities, log on to http://parwich.org and have a good look around. Make sure you have a bit of time though, it’s easy to lose several hours reading through the numerous snippets of news and views posted up on a daily basis.

We would like to congratulate the village and the website’s hard-working administrators for creating something that must be almost unique in such a small sleepy village as Parwich.

What strikes you as you click away at the hundreds of articles and comments on the site is just how busy it is. Villagers we assume must log on every day and debate the finer points of life both within the village and further afield. It’s fascinating, friendly, and a shining example of a healthy community embracing modern technology.  (more…)

Flooding: update and more photos.

Faced with a rainfall of last night’s spectacular dimensions (a record-busting 39mm in eight hours, according to our resident weather man), one would have assumed that the higher up your property, the safer you would be. In this case, almost the reverse turned out to be true. For a few hours, the unfortunate residents of Smithy Lane found their houses temporarily converted into “riverside properties”, as one resident wrily put it.

With the floods pouring down from Parwich Hill at an unprecedented rate, Smithy Lane became a gushing torrent, as today’s tide marks on the side of buildings still demonstrate. At the bottom of the road, the waters cascaded down the footpath leading to the school, ripping up the tarmac to a degree that suggested an earthquake had struck. The road damage continued beyond the school and down to the square, even exposing subterranean pipes in some areas. Elsewhere, wheelie bins had been overturned and carried along by the current.

Down by the brook that connects the Alsop road to the green, a collapsed wall now forms the gateway to yet more destruction. Most of the waterside path has been badly churned up and waterlogged, rendering it almost impassable.

Perhaps some of the worst damage of all is to be found in and around The Sycamore, as the photo below amply demonstrates. As we passed, a council lorry was unloading sandbags in the car park. Our sympathies to Janet and Steve, who have suffered more flood-related disruption over the years than most.

On the lower lying land towards the south eastern edge of the village, more properties have been flooded, and more mopping-up operations are taking place. Again, our sympathies to all villagers who have been affected.

Flooding: update on damage to school.

Caroline Rodgers reports:

Parwich School has not escaped unscathed. The damage to the road leading up to school means the area is unsafe, but also inside the building, water has flooded the Key Stage 1 area as well as the toilets. Ged has sandbagged the area to try to prevent further damage, but with the rain still falling we shall just have to watch and see.

The boiler room flooded too, the pump is still working in there and will hopefully continue to do so.

All the damage has been photographed and reported to Derbyshire.

I will keep everyone posted with regards to school opening on Tuesday.

This Week’s Stunner

If the ‘movers and shakers’ of Alsop, Ballidon, Pikehall and Parwich were away last week they must be on a fortnight’s holidays.  It was particularly hard to find any local links in this week’s Ashbourne News Telegraph 3rd Sept 2008, not even a photo of Debbie.  I found only one specific mention, though thank you Patti for pointing out the one that was missed (I had thought it odd there was nothing on the Snail Trail):

  • p.3 QEGS students again set new records, this time with their GCE results.  Congratulations to all, particularly to Catherine B who achieved 10 A/A* grades.  The Great Roberto may be over shadowed by the successes of the next generation.  (Denstone College students also achieved excellent results.)
  • p.5 On Saturday Ashbourne councillors will be undertaking a traffic survey, volunteers to help are wanted.  This is part of their campaign for an Ashbourne bypass on the A515.
  • p.6 The suspect in the Biggin cannabis raid, Ming Huang, was remanded in custody to appear in court again this week (see our previous post).
  • p.27 Wirksworth Festival‘s Art & Architecture Trail is to run on the weekend of 6/7th September.
  • p.28 Craft Fair in Tissington village hall on Saturday.
  • p.28 The Riff Raff Festival will be taking place on 12, 13 & 14th of September near Hulland Ward.  Tickets limited to 400.
  • p.29 Ashbourneis ahead of Parwich in the race to provide allotments (see our previous post).  The 1908 Smallholding and Allotments Act states councils should be funding such endeavors.
  • p.38 Public Notice issued by County Council re. new speed limits on stretches of the A515.  Various additional 30, 40 and 50 mph speed restrictions to be applied.  It effects our stretch but the notice does not make it clear what speed limits are being imposed where.
  • p45 Report on Bradbourne Fell race, but their photographer seems to have missed ‘son of’ and Graham (see our post for more photos).
  • p.46 Presentation of trophies last Friday night for the Summer Pool League.  The Sycamore was runner up for the Captains Trophy.
  • p.47 Results of the Summer League Footballlist Biggin in fourth place over all, though a few matches are still to be played this week.

As always let us know what we have missed.

Cannabis haul in Biggin

Derbyshire Constabulary seized 300 cannabis plants at a house in Biggin on Tuesday.  They are still investigating, and their press release reports a 24 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of producing cannabis and is due to appear in Chesterfield Magistrates Court.

Detective Inspector Jed Lowe said:

The warrant was executed after we received information from the local community that drugs may be in the property. Information such as this is invaluable and we would urge anyone with information about drugs in their neighbourhood to contact police.”
