PP5

PP5The Parwich Panoramic 5 fell race started in 2009. Initially set up as a fund raiser towards the redevelopment of the Memorial Hall, our village hall, it has become an annual fixture in the fell runner’s calendar.

Further down the post is an outline of the Senior Race route, and information on the history of what you might see when taking it at a more leisurely pace than the PP5 competitors do. Please  walk the route and send in any photographs to parwich@hotmail.co.uk, as we hope eventually to produce a leaflet for both locals and visitors.

But first, here are the race results and photographs from previous years posted at parwich.org:

Parwich Panoramic Five

The annual Parwich Panoramic Five cross country fell race will take place on Tuesday 6th August at 7:30pm. This is the fifth year of the event, so we’ve a bit to do to clock up the history of our fantastic hill race successfully run again last night. The PP5 event was organized five years ago to help raise funds for the rebuilding of our beautiful Memorial Hall, and is a bit of a legacy of that. Any funds raised on the night either via the entry or raffle will be donated to the Memorial Hall in order to contribute to maintenance and upkeep. In association with the PP5, local Fell Race organizer David Denton puts on a series of popular children’s races starting at 6:30pm. Come along an enjoy an evening of running in Parwich. Starts and ends in front of the Sycamore Inn.

Darren Holloway, a local runner who was runner-up in the Parwich Panoramic 5 in 2011, tragically died this weekend whilst taking part in the Ian Hogson Fell Race in Patterdale, Cumbria.

Darren was only 42, and he was a bit of a local hero to all of us who tried to run a bit. He was second in Parwich behind Chris Nicoll in our 2011 run, and third this year, when I had the privilege of presenting him with trophies for that, and for best Over 40’s veteran.

Daz always had something nice to say about Parwich in his blog “Laid Back Fell Runner”. Not only was he seriously fast; he was a lovely man and true gentleman, who loved the sport and the mountains with a passion. He will be sadly missed by all of us who only remember seeing his smiling face on the start line, and his heels thereafter.

Thanks to all those who helped on the PP5 night – we managed to raise £392, which will again go to Parwich Memorial Hall funds.

This year, the race itself raised £315 – which was a bit down on last year, due to a slightly reduced entry (were we competing with a small event in London?) – and we spent a bit more on trophies and prizes. Sandra and Fiona added a further £77 through their hard work on the raffle on the night.

Thanks again to all who helped and made it such a fun evening for both runners and spectators.

Dave Denton, the organiser of numerous Junior Fell Races, including those that are on the same evening as the Parwich Panoramic Five, ran in Buxton carrying the Olympic Torch. He said that it was the most wonderful experience.

We are extremely fortunate in Parwich, as he is going to bring his Olympic torch on Tuesday evening.  Throughout 2012 he is hoping to raise £10,000 to enable his charity, IDEAS to either build a school in India or to convert a building to provide a permanent base for a school currently in rented premises.

If you would like to have your photo taken with the torch, David would encourage you to make a donation to the charity, however large or small. He will also be raffling the torch later this year and on Tuesday he will be selling tickets at £5 each or 5 for £20.

His charity, “IDEAS”, which stands for International Development through Education, (more…)

The Parwich race gets a big thumbs up. This would make an ideal first fell race.

Daz H, who finished in second place at the Parwich Panoramic Five, has written a most appreciative blog post about the event.

This year’s successful Parwich Panoramic Five race raised £571.42 – up over 25% on last year.  As in previous years, all profits will go to the Memorial Hall.

An enormous thanks go to all who took part and helped make it a great evening.

 Thanks Graham

This was the third Parwich Panoramic Five Fell Race (PP5) with the best turnout so far, 112 runners. There were 24 clubs represented and 34 non affiliated runners. The overall winner was Chris Nicoll from Derby Tri Club and he just missed the course record by 37 seconds. 28 ladies ran, with the leading lady, Jo Bednall coming in 42nd overall and 70 veterans participated: aged 40+. Four juniors ran, all finishing in the top 78% of the field, with the fastest coming in 28th position aged only 11!

“Best fell race”, “Great course and views”, “Best marked course” and “Friendliest marshalls” were some of the comments that have been made about this year’s race – a tremendous amount of work was put into last night’s events, so these words are very much appreciated.

The event is co-ordinated by Graham J, with a very supportive band of workers, who deliver, fetch, carry, marshal, photograph etc etc.. So big thanks to everyone, who helped, ran and supported this fabulous evening. (Below is Graham busy organising his “troops”!)

The evening also saw the running of the Junior Fell Race which is organised independently by David Denton: another great success. For those youngsters who would like to do more running, just check out his website for more local runs.

Finally a quick plug for next year’s PP5, which is provisionally booked for Tuesday 7th August 2012 – tbc.

Accompanied by three glam marshalls, the roving parwich.org photographer stationed himself at the top of one of the steepest hills in the Panoramic Five. This was to ensure the runners were looking their best as their pictures were taken!

It was remarkable how fresh the athletes looked as they reached the top. Pretty impressive stuff!
