Derbyshire Dales residents urged to report dog-fouling hot-spots
Derbyshire Dales District Council is urging residents to report areas in the district where dog fouling is causing a problem.
“Although 9 out of 10 dog owners pick up dog mess after their pets, that still leaves a significant number who don’t,” said Councillor Chris Furness, Chairman of the Community & Environment Committee at the District Council.
“We’re encouraging residents to help us by putting dog mess in the bin and reporting problem areas to us online.”
Community Development Officer, Emma Mortimer added:
“With the information from residents we will target those areas with the worst problems by patrolling and talking to dog owners to encourage responsible behaviour and putting up additional signs.
“To help encourage dog owners to pick up after their pets we are providing dog-mess bag dispensers on our land where we know there is a problem. Bagged dog mess can be disposed of in any litter bin.”
Residents can report a litter or dog fouling hot spot via an online form available at http://www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/reportdogmess

Here at Pond Cottage we have lost two chickens, presumably to the fox that Vicky saw on 4th April. Going on the location of the residual feathers, one was taken in the field between Pond Cottage and Veronica’s and the other in the field behind Pond Cottage, on the boundary with Veronica’s field. Both would have been taken in the daytime, one today and one probably yesterday (or today, or the day before). I am going to keep mine in for a while so please be careful if you have hens as I am sure he / she will be on the lookout for an alternative source of lunch. The fox is clearly pretty fearless and cunning!

For all those who have been doing their best to keep the wild bird population and other people’s poultry flocks safe by restricting their own birds, today’s government announcement comes as very welcome news:
19 March 2021: The risk of avian influenza to both wild and kept birds has reduced to ‘medium’. The Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) requiring enhanced biosecurity will remain in force but Wednesday 31 March 2021 will be the last day poultry and other captive birds will need to be housed (housing restrictions end 23:59 31 March 2021). Bird gatherings are still prohibited. High standards of biosecurity remain essential as infection may still be present in the environment.

We’ve received a number of reports concerning dog fouling around the village. There are numerous signs and bins around the village like this one-

Whilst recognising that the majority of dog owners in the village do clean up after their dogs it is sadly not everyone. Please remember to bag it and bin it.
Also there seem to be a number of dogs allowed to wander free around the village. Please accompany your dog at all times otherwise there is a risk of it fouling around the streets and also getting into fields with stock. During this lockdown there are very few visitors in the village so we can’t push the blame onto outsiders.
Particular “hot” spots at the moment appear to be:
Area around the school;
The footpath beside Smithy Close;
Parsons Croft.
Thank you on behalf of all Parwich residents.

Seeing the advert for a cockerel has prompted me to let people know that it is a difficult time for poultry keepers. For anyone unfamiliar with keeping poultry, since 14 Dec 2020 all poultry and other captive birds have had to be separated from wild birds by being housed or totally enclosed in netted pens. Birds cannot free range. This is due to avian flu within the UK and applies whether you keep one bird or thousands. Further information and updates on locations of disease outbreaks can be found at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/avian-influenza-bird-flu

Derbyshire Dales District Council is urging residents to report areas in the district where litter and dog fouling are causing a problem under a new campaign – ‘Don’t be a tosser – bin it!’
After a summer where high volumes of litter were seen across the district, the council is supporting community groups and individuals who are picking up litter and helping to keep it clean. But it’s not just litter, dog fouling continues to be an issue.
“Although 9 out of 10 dog owners pick up dog mess after their pets, that still leaves a significant number who don’t,” said Councillor Chris Furness, Chairman of the Community & Environment Committee at the District Council.
“We’re encouraging residents to help us by putting litter and dog mess in the bin and reporting problem areas to us.”
Community Development Officer, Emma Mortimer added:
“With the information from residents we will target those areas with the worst problems by patrolling and talking to dog owners to encourage responsible behaviour. We will support groups and individuals who want to help reduce the problem in their community by providing pink chalk-based spray paint to highlight dog mess and put up signs.
“To help encourage dog owners to pick up after their pets we are providing dog-mess bag dispensers on our land where we know there is a problem.”
Residents can report a litter or dog fouling hot spot via an online form.

A rabbit has taken up residence in my garden, I am not a rabbit expert but it looks very like a domestic rabbit rather than a wild one. Has anyone lost a rabbit??

I have had a hen go missing recently. The breed is called Needwood Blue.
If by chance she’s joined anyone’s flock or she may be nesting in a tree or garden, could you give me a call please.

Just to let you know.. Runt is home safe and sound. Thank you to two lovely people hearing him when they were tending to their horses. I was trying too hard not to cry and didn’t get their names.Thank you for your help.Lauren
Last seen around 11pm last night. He’s called ‘Runt’ and he’s 17, practically deaf and can’t see very well. He’s tabby and white. Very wobbly gait and he’ll probably be tilting his head to the left. It’s very unusual for him to go wandering.

This from the Parish Council-
Concerns about dog fouling on the Parson’s Croft playing field have again been raised with the Parish Council. Like all open public spaces in the Village, Parsons Croft is already covered by a Derbyshire Dales Public Space Protection Order. This makes failure to clear up dog fouling an offence for which a fixed penalty can be issued.
If the problem continues, the Parish Council may feel that it has no alternative but to consider applying for a Dog Control Order (DCO) banning dogs from the area altogether.
The Council would be very reluctant to take this step, recognising how unfair it would be to the majority of responsible dog owners. But it has also to consider how unfair it is to residents, and particularly children using the area, to expose them to the health risks caused by illegal dog fouling.
If a DCO had to be introduced, responsibility for the injustice caused to some would lie clearly with those dog owners who had caused the problem.
Please help the Council to avoid the need to consider such a measure by ensuring that these concerns as widely understood as possible.
Instances of dog fouling should be reported here,
http://www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/environment-and-waste/roads/street-care-and-cleaning/dog-fouling
This will bring them to the attention of the enforcement officers who can issue fines. It is not necessary to identify the offender in order to make a report. It is possible to request removal of faeces, but if it has been dealt with this can be noted on the report.
