We would like to express our appreciation to everyone who contributed to a highly successful Open Gardens and Childrens’ Show.

Despite the wind, the gardens were looking beautiful and we would like to thank all those who invited us into their gardens and allowed us enjoy the results of their hard work.

Thank you also to the children who submitted exhibits to the show. Your creations were wonderful!

We would also like to thank you if you were involved behind the scenes – those who organised the event, donated plants, baked scones, served yummy cream teas, did the washing up….plus others who undertook the thousand other unsung jobs! Your efforts allowed us all to have a really good time.

If you can spare a little time this afternoon to help with washing up or serving cream teas it would be greatly appreciated.  Call in at the Memorial Hall anytime from 2pm – 6pm.

Thank you.

When the heavens opened for last year’s Gardens Open Day, the “positive spin” went something like this:

“Well, it’s a good thing in a way; the true enthusiasts won’t care about getting wet, so the gardens will be less crowded and we’ll all get a better view…”

This time around, I’m guessing that we could all put up with the occasional bottle-neck in return for some halfway decent weather!

The good news is that the Met Office are predicting dry conditions for most of Sunday. As it’s always difficult to know which forecast to pick from the Met Office site (are we closer to Bakewell, Buxton or Sudbury?), here are the current snapshots from all three: (more…)

The following has been provided by parwich film:

Last night’s very well attended showing of St. Trinnian’s marked the end of our successful third Season (2007/2008).

We are now planning our 2008/09 Season.  Up to now we have focused on mainstream block busters, but we are looking at a more varied programme next season, with possibly additional showings for children, young adults and minority interests.  Do let us know what you would like to see, either by putting comments below, or by speaking to Arnold, Martin or Peter, or by emailing us on martin@orchidserve.com.  We would particularly welcome input from teenagers and young adults, and would welcome any ideas how parwich film can support Project Parwich, for example you might be organising a fund raising event and would like to show a film or music videos as part of that event, or even just have photographs projected onto the screen.

Thank you to all that have supported us, to everyone that helps out with the film nights, and an especial thanks to the Memorial Hall Management Committee for setting up the group and providing our administration and accounting.  We are a very good example of how new groups and new uses of the Memorial Hall can be promoted.  Click here to find out more about parwich film

Thank you to Di Turnbull for sending in this post.

What a great time we had planting up the border outside the hard play area.

Cloe, Courtney, Josh and Dan helped to put down the stone around the access paths and seating area a few months ago and were keen to help with the design and planting of this area too. And what a help they were – fantastic! We planted through the weed-suppressing membrane, adding fresh compost and fertilizer, covering the plants again with the bark chippings. Keen to learn, their enthusiasm never wavered in the three hours it took to make the area look attractive. Josh did, however, remind us of the importance of being finished by 6.20pm, for ‘Doctor Who’!

They all said that they were going to ask others to take care not to walk on the area and to keep it looking good. A sense of ownership? – I think so.

Thank you to Val & Glynis for sending in this post.

This weekend it was Parwich’s turn to host the annual tour match vs Cromer Tennis Club. (On alternative years Parwich visit Cromer) The weekend started with a friendly get-together in the Sycamore on Friday evening to catch up on the news and events of the past 12 months. Following on from the club’s junior tennis coaching on Saturday, there was a social tennis competition between the two clubs, which lasted late into the afternoon.

Val Stevenson arranged a near mystical match play to ensure that everyone got to play with all the other players of the opposite sex – in the tennis sense – so mystical in fact that Val herself won!  Good weather and good tennis meant a fun day in which Parwich’s unconventional play often beguiled the more polished Cromer players. For example Chris Harrison’s electric net play!

The day was rounded off with a lively dinner in the Coach and Horses at Fenny Bentley.

The “Match Proper” for the Burgess Trophy took place on Sunday morning, and turned out as close as ever.  Towards the end, Parwich were 4-6 down with two rubbers to play. Then youngsters Oon Yarlett and Zander Drummond won their set and nail-bitingly Di Bunting and Rob Drummond won the final set.  At 6-6 Parwich had taken the match – won narrowly based on the overall number of games won.

Following the match, chilli, crumble and Pavlova were enjoyed in the Thornton Pavilion, washed down with champagne kindly supplied by Cromer.  Colin Sims toasted both the Centenary of Cromer TC, which they celebrate this year and Parwich TC’s 10th Anniversary, which was last year.  To date the Burgess Trophy has been competed for eight times with both clubs having wond on four occasions!  The ninth match will take place in Cromer in early September 2009, on their beautiful grass courts.

(Thanks to Graham for supplying this post.)

The Grand opening of the superb hard play area on Sunday morning was followed by an equally auspicious event in the afternoon – “The Chairman & Presidents day” organized by the Parwich Tennis Club.

Flushed with success playing for the football team in the opening round robin competition in the morning (oh yes, they really were that desperate), Glynis suggested I would be welcome to turn my hand to an equally alien game of tennis in the afternoon for the open competition which marked the club’s Chairman and Presidents competition. Having already lost all sense of reason, and been subject to anaesthetising levels of public humiliation, I figured that there was little left to lose in terms of personal dignity. After all, it was a pretty miserable day, and the highlight left for me on Sunday was a pre-dinner pint of Pedigree or three, so I hastily agreed. After all, I already had my trainers and track suit on, so I didn’t even have to go home to change.

The enthusiastic members of the tennis club convened at 1:15pm to be addressed by one Lt. Col. Linnell (Nia), who explained and subsequently orchestrated the order of events with the usual cool efficiency of an Officer and mother of four. The format of the competition would be another round robin, this time with 19 players whose ages ranged from 12 to 50, where each player would face 14 short matches of “short tennis”, with the winner being the one who racked up the most points during their respective matches.

This is going to be like taking candy off a baby, I thought – half of the competitors were youngsters, and the rest seemed so nice that when confronted by a ruthless winner (me), they would surely crumple in the face of such determined opposition. And besides, they were so welcoming, and happy that I had joined in, the only difficulty seemed to be coming to terms with my waltzing off with their first prize.

Peter Trewhitt supplied the following:

For an hour or so we took over the front bar at the Sycamore, so the casual drinkers participated in the meeting whether they wanted too or not. Some 12 people participated in the discussions on the Conservation Area appraisal with ideas from two other people not present being included. Despite the demands the Memorial Hall redevelopment will place on people’s time we strongly felt the Environment Group should continue, with some five people so far committing to the Group.

Overall the feeling about the National Park Authority’s consultation document on the Parwich Conservation Area was positive. It was recognised that a lot of work had gone into producing a good description of village. Individuals had some comments on the detail of the appraisal document, though it was recognised that it was impossible for everyone to agree on all of the detail. However it is hoped that people will raise some of these points directly with Sue Adam and the Peak Park Authority’s conservation team.

What we felt was important was the overall characterisation of the village. It is important that we conserve the village as a mixed living working community and not just a set of buildings. A letter to the Authority will be prepared from the group looking at the following:

  • The village as a living community (more…)

Parwich sport has never had it so good, as dozens of fans crowded together supporting this impressive occasion. The ground was hard & the conditions were cold but we witnessed drama, mental resilience & the breathless physical fitness of so many.

We may not have had the hordes of celebrities who were present last night at Calzaghe’s fight, we were just more selective choosing Dr Sam Strachan (aka Tom Chambers) to open the occasion. One of his more memorable & very astute statements was “may every ball be in” as he manfully cut the recycled red ribbon to the hard play area. Di who opened the proceeding stated that she “particularly enjoyed the kiss” from heart throb ‘Sam’ of Holby City fame.

Three teams were competing for the accolade of champion of champions, the single sex team of the Netball players and the mixed teams of footballers & tennis players.

Do you or your family use the sports field and area on Parson’s Croft?

If so, there is a great opportunity for you to play a part in its management.

We are holding a preliminary meeting next Saturday 26th April at 10:00 a.m. to see if there is interest in forming a group to look at various issues.

This group would consider topics related to

  • Maintenance
  • Promotion
  • Development

If it goes ahead, the group will make recommendations to the Parish Council on matters related to the whole area.

So if you are a user, would like to be a user or are an adjoining resident, why not have your say?

We hope that the group will be Positive and Proactive, ensuring that this wonderful facility is available, and continues to develop, for years to come.

Following the previous post on the successful resurfacing of the hard play area and the community work day, Di Turnbull has sent us further information:

P.A.R.C. stands for Play Area Resurfacing Committee. It was set up purely to organise the resurfacing of the hard play area. It is a sub-committee of the Parish Council. After the opening on the 20th April, recommendations for the maintenance and upkeep of the area will be forwarded to the Parish Council and then P.A.R.C. will disband.

We are hoping to have a preliminary meeting during April for anyone who has an interest in managing, maintaining and promoting the whole of the Parson’s Croft sporting area – a new ‘Field Management Committee’. This would involve all user groups – cricket, tennis, bowls, football, netball etc.- Parish council reps. and adjoining residents (or any residents for that matter), who would like to play an active role in this fantastic facility. We are so lucky to have it and would like to keep it in tip-top condition.

Di also added the following discussion point:

A couple of years ago, I set up a fundraising section on the Tennis Club website, which has clickable banners. These have tracking codes embedded and earn the Club commission on sales. It has been working fine so far but could be much more widely used. For some time I have been wondering how to open this up to the whole village, as I’m sure many people buy internet goods, who are not aware of this scheme. There are lots of banners on the site and it’s just a matter of clicking through the link to the merchant. There is a ‘Fundraising Sitemap’, which shows all the companies and their commission rate. Then there are the two links pages, split into categories – one with general companies and another for sports gear.

If enough funds were raised, this may be an opportunity to benefit all user groups/villagers in relation to the Parson’s Croft area.

(Pheadair’s note: We have not addressed the issue of using PARWICH.ORG to generate income yet and we see extending community involvement as our first priority, though a few people have already made suggestions and it is planned that we will participate in the Memorial Hall fund raising. Do add your thoughts.)

Sharing Parwich History 2

The informal meeting at the Sycamore last night went well. Some eight of us met and looked through a collection of press cuttings and some photographs taken by the Ashbourne Telegraph, from the last fifty years. However by the end of the evening the group had been swelled by others who had come in for a drink, but were interested in the cuttings.

We did have some discussion about how a wider audience could get to see these materials, and the archives held by the Local History Society. There is not enough material for anything on the scale of the 2002 exhibition in the Church, but it would be interesting for villagers to know what is there. Nowhere in the village is currently suitable for a permanent display, but does have anyone suggestions for something more temporary?

Dates for your diary:

7-30pm Thursday 8th May an illustrated talk on “History of Cromford Mill” at the Memorial Hall (£1 members, £2 non-members).

7-30pm Wednesday 4th June an evening tour of Brassington, meet in front of the Miner’s Arms (no charge).  Contact Peter Trewhitt tel. 287 with a rough idea of numbers.

7pm Wednesday 11th June an evening tour of Parwich, laid on for Wetton Local History Group but others welcome to join in, meet in the Sycamore Inn car park (no charge).

Sharing Parwich history

Don’t forget the History Society are holding an informal meeting at the Sycamore tomorrow (Thursday 10th April) at 8pm in the back room. The idea is to come along and share any information you have or memories you have or share any topics you want to find out more about. The idea is to explore recent history: your life time, your parents’ life time and your grandparents’ life time.

We have set no specific agenda as we want to see what interests the people who come along. However if no one has any specific topics in mind we have several fall backs, including local working life, the carbide shed and the Methodist Chapel. This is a new venture for the History Society, but if successful we will hold more such events.

Our thanks to Denis Laycock for providing us with this post.

Parwich Over Sixties began their new season of visits with a mystery trip. 37 members set off at 6 o’clock with our driver, as usual, keeping very quiet as to our destination.

We soon found ourselves up on the A515 and heading towards Buxton. We were rewarded with some excellent views across the Staffordshire Moorlands as the sun slowly sank in the skies: beautiful shades of green in the fading light.

From Buxton some of us were in ‘new territory’: the A5004 along Long Hill, overlooking the Goyt Valley and then via Kettleshulme to Macclesfield and eventually our destination, The Knot Inn at Rushton Spencer. Several of us had seen a number of hares as we were travelling, and near Kettleshulme a couple of red deer were seen in the woodlands. At The Knot we ejoyed an excellent evening repast before returning home under starlit skies with a beautiful crescent moon (Brrr….more frost!) Back in Parwich just in time to get the heat on in the garden frame after another lovely trip.

Thanks to our driver David, who somehow always finds somewhere new to take us.

Our next visit is Castle Howard near York on May 13th. At present we have spare places on this trip which may be available to non Members. The coach leaves the Green at 8am.  Contact Alan Lowes (tel. 279) to reserve a place, the cost will be £8-50 entry to Castle Howard plus the coach costs.

Despite the cold, the showers held off and the setting sun was visible at Ashwood Park in Buxton last night. The Tuesday Team had a close run match taking two games out of the four. However they won the match with an overall score of 74 to 72. Congratulations on a very promising start to the season.

Ploughed On Despite Snow.

Our thanks to Di Turnbull for submitting this article.

Following the resurfacing and refurbishment of the hard play area on Parsons Croft, the P.A.R.C. committee arranged a working group to complete maintenance tasks, before the official reopening on 20th April 2008, at 11a.m.

What we didn’t expect was a fall of snow that very morning!

Undeterred, we all met, completing the necessary repairs. This involved replacing some of the posts and boards and beginning to form a planted area on the perimeter path.

It turned out to be a beautiful sunny morning. We worked hard but also had lots of fun. In four hours, the job was done. Amazing what can be achieved with a few tools, some cement, a bit of muscle and a packet of chocolate biscuits!

Thanks go particularly to the Tennis Club, whose members made up the majority of the volunteer workforce.

We all look forward to using this superb village facility in the years to come.

Report from AGM – March 26th 2008

The Carnival Committee held a successful & well attended AGM in the Royal British Legion last Wednesday, March 26th.

Chairman Denis Laycock welcomed a full complement of existing committee members together with newcomers Sharon Swindell (making a welcome return after an absence of several years) and Louise Laycock. He was able to report on a successful Wakes Week last year. In spite of adverse weather our only losses to planned events had been the Village market on Wakes Saturday and children’s sports on the Monday. We had certainly been more fortunate than many villages organising similar events. Other events druing the year had included a successful November 5th bonfire and the annual ‘Carols on the Green’, both of which had been well supported.

None of this would have been possible without the hard work of committee members and several long standing supporters who always make themselves available when needed. We owe them all a big ‘thank you’.

Treasure Roger Cundy was able to report a satisfactory bank balance. The accounts – kindly audited by Peter Rawlins – showed that Wakes had make a slight profit, due to an excellent collection of £190 on the Saturday, and the very successful ball race. Profits go towards the village bonfire and the carol evening.

The elections showed all existing committee members willing to stand again and with newcomers we now have a good sized committee, with a good balance of age groups. We are however always keen to welcome any newcomers. Wakes Week itself is very demanding, and to be honest, we cannot have too many members! Roger Cundy and Sandra Chadfield were re-elected as Treasurer and Secretary, and Denis Laycock remains as Chairman.

The first Committee Metting followed on from the AGM when we began making arranges for this year’s Wakes Week. After all, it is only 12 weeks away!

Thank you to Denis Laycock for submitting this report.
