Bank Holiday Bike Ride & BBQ

It’s that time of year where some folk end up with a glut of garden produce and a lack of enthusiasm use them – after all, there are only so many things you can do with courgettes!

So, this year, Parwich Legion has introduced a produce box. The idea is that locals can bring in their surplus home-grown / homemade produce (e.g. potatoes, beans, courgettes, cucumbers, tomatoes, herbs, raspberries, jams, chutney, eggs etc.) for others to buy.

You can opt to sell your produce or you can donate the money generated to the ‘Legion Activity Fund’. If you would like to sell it, please have a price in mind when you take it in.

Speak to Gill either at the Legion, or on 390309 for further details.

WW2 Child evacuee staying in Parwich (again)

Were you a child living in the Parwich area during WW2 and can you remember a child evacuee (?from M/C) called Joshua (Joe) Potter who was staying with Mr Kramer & Mrs Annie Webster and their sons Ronnie & Stanley at Blanche Meadow Farm from 1939-1944? Mr Potter would have been approx. 7-12 yrs old during his years in Parwich.  Mr Potter sang in the choir at St. Peter’s Church.

Mr Joshua Potter and his wife Linda, are coming to stay in Croft Cottage for the week of 18-25 August. Mr Potter would be interested to meet up with anyone who may remember him.

I have already received some information from a few local residents, but please let me know if you know of anyone who may like to meet Mr and Mrs Potter.

Thank you to all the runners for coming to join us. Competitors ranged from 17 to 72. No records were broken but the course was fast and the temperature dropped making the conditions good for the runners.

Many thanks

WW1 Centenary Meeting

Planning for Pump Hill

Some residents may have noticed activity at Pump Hill with people visiting the site and trees being marked. This is part of the process of surveying the site and drawing up plans reflecting different suggestions that have been received. This work is kindly being undertaken by Lynette Coyne.

The information gathered, and drawings prepared, will help with future discussion and choice regarding the site. At this stage nothing has been ruled in or ruled out. The minutes of the last Parish Council meeting recorded that:

“For the avoidance of doubt it should be noted that no decisions about implementing some or all of any plan or any variation to it, has been taken, or will be taken other than in a Parish Council Meeting”.

The Parish Council is grateful for feedback that residents have provided. If you have any further comments you can e-mail the clerk using the address clerk@parwichparishcouncil.org.uk .

Bowls Report

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

At least we have no excuses regarding the weather. I don’t think we have been wet once this year and with only 5 weeks left of the season we can’t grumble even if we are now. Mixed fortunes this week. The old archbishops egg thing in our case you know.

Tuesday League.

Home – Matlock Bath – 31 July – 6.00pm.

Having played our little legs off last week the bowls ‘form’ must have been way up there. Not a bit of it, we didn’t win a game! Edith and Rick came closest going down by the odd point 20 – 21. The rest of the team really should have stayed at home and watched repeats of Dads Army on the tele. Frances and Tony came closest of the losers 16 – 21. Better not mention the scores of our other two pairs, suffice it to say they lost well. Parwich 60, Matlock Bath 84. The team we beat comfortably last week went to Hope. A side going like trains and won at a canter. Perhaps we will win at a canter next week!

Next match – Away – Whitworth Park – 7 August – 6.00pm

Thursday Friendly League.

Away – Wirksworth – 2 August – 1.45pm.

One of the problems some of our players have is ‘reaching’ a long jack and Wirksworths green is probably the biggest in the league. No problems reaching this weather, even after a drop of rain. Reaching the jack however was the least of our problems today, accuracy was sadly lacking. After the doubles we were 23 points adrift and that was after a fabulous win by Audrey B and Ian J 21 – 14. You can work out our other two pairs scores. Wirksworth 56, Parwich 33. Not a lot is the answer.

A lot to make up with the singles, but make up we did. Harry B and John H got us off to a flying start, both winning 15 – 6. Frances and Captain Fantastic Dawn also winning 15 – 10. Although we lost the remaining two singles Keith B and Tony A battled all the way, in Tony’s case losing by a single point. Wirksworth 62, Parwich 86. Final score Wirksworth 118, Parwich 119. Close as you can get without a draw. Good match played in a good spirit.

No Thursday match next week. It’s the annual Charity bash, the Greenaway. Let us hope the weather continues to shine on us and we raise lots of money for such a good cause.

Next Match – Blank week – Greenaway – 9 August

Defibrillator Training

Training on how to use the Static Defibrillator, which is located on the wall of the Sycamore Inn, Parwich, will take place in the Parwich Memorial Hall, 7:30pm, Thursday 20 September 2018.

It is useful to have as many people as possible trained to use defibrillators as they can be found in so many locations these days, opening up the potential to save more lives.

You do not need to be a First Responder (FPOS) to undertake the training, but anyone who would like to become one are more than welcome to.

More details will follow closer to the date about what the training will involve, but just wanted to get the date in peoples’ diaries.

Herbes de Provence for Sale

herbes de provence 2

I got fed up of ordering small amounts of herbs that cost a fortune and so I thought I would try buying a bulk bag with the view of trying to sell the extra locally, at a good price….

I have bought ‘Herbes de Provence’, which is a mixture of dried herbs considered typical of the Provence region of south east France. There are numerous versions but this one is a really nice, good quality, mix that I’ve bought before. It contains thyme, marjoram, rosemary, oregano, basil, savoury & tarragon. It has a best before date of end of March 2020.

Typically it is used in Mediterranean cooking (so it goes particularly well with tomato based dishes) and is used to flavour grilled fish and meat but you can use it in loads of things – soups, stews, casseroles, marinades etc. – you can even sprinkle a bit on cheese on toast!

In the supermarkets they sell at 70p-£1.00 for 14g (which is the size of you average supermarket spice jar). I am selling them in bags at £1 for 50g – let me know if you want any (Emma, Parwich 203), or pick some up from the Legion. If you don’t need them to use now, I can also vac pack the herbs so they will keep fresher longer – it will cost 10p extra (only because the vac bags cost 10p each), just let me know.

If this works I may well try buying and selling other herbs / spices locally – so let me know if you would like anything in particular. Also, if you ever need small amounts of herbs or spices (either to try for a new recipe, or because you’ve run out) the chances are I could well have it (I do a lot of cooking!) – feel free to ask – I work from home so I am usually in!

Thanks

Emma, Pond Cottage.

If so please call Emma & Rob on 203, or email robert.clarke@zen.co.uk.

Many thanks
