LA LA LAND
Winner of 6 Oscars, rated one of the best films of the year, La La Land needs no introduction.
Mia (Emma Stone), an aspiring actress, serves lattes to movie stars in between auditions, and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a dedicated jazz musician, scrapes by playing cocktail piano gigs in dingy bars, but as success mounts they are faced with decisions that begin to fray the fragile fabric of their love affair, and the dreams they worked so hard to maintain in each other threaten to rip them apart.

We are looking for parents, governors, friends of the school, well anyone willing to spare us some time!!!We would love it if you could come to school on Tuesday 2nd May at 3.30pm and give the school gardening club a helping hand for 1 hour.
The borders are full of winter weeds and need to be cleared before we can get to the fun part of planting with the children.
We have plenty of equipment, so just turn up, bring a few other family and friends with you and get stuck in.
Many thanks in hopeful anticipation.

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB
We had a really good Club game last Saturday, the mixed doubles competition. After some close matches the Dawn and Rick pairing came out on top. Congratulations. The weekly matches provided some close and some not so close games. The one pervading aspect however was the weather. It was freezing, brass monkeys flying round all over the place.
Tuesday League
April 25 – Home – Whitworth Park.
After a couple of matches Whitworth were riding high in the league. The evening was absolutely freezing and you needed to keep moving to stop frost bite setting in, but your team are made of strong stuff! Dawn and Sue A got us off to a great start winning 21 – 10, at the same time Pat B and Harry B were doing even better winning 21 – 7. Inevitably Rick and Edith kept up their usual standard with a 21 – 10 win. What a pair. Last but by no means least Tony and John B fought off their opponents to win 21 – 18. Only very occasionally do you manage to win all four games and in our case once a season if you are lucky. Overall the final score was Parwich 84, Whitworth 45. After three matches we are second in the division, it’s all downhill from here.
Because there are only 11 teams in the division we have a blank week next week. Watch out for us the week after.
Next Match – Bakewell – Home – 9 May 6.30pm.
Thursday League
April 27 – Away – Baslow.
The league had decided last year to impose penalties on teams who fielded less than 9 players in matches, deducting 25 points for each player less than 9. Now bearing in mind we only have 16 members, this week 4 people were away, One has a broken wrist, another a very bad back and finally another with a more urgent appointment. Now you maths graduates will have concluded 16 take way 7 makes us on the cusp of losing points before we begin. However your trusty team battled through freezing temperatures and biting winds. Two great wins in the doubles, Dawn and Pat B streaking (not literally, it was too cold) home 21 – 7 and Harry B and Rick winning equally impressively 21 – 12. With the 14 points won by our third pair we were leading 56 – 40 after the doubles.
So having got us off to a great, if somewhat unexpected, start we would romp away, as usual in the singles. Whoops, the opposition forgot to read the script, we lost in the singles! Thankfully we did have a couple of good wins via Dawn and Rick, and others, although losing, got close. The final singles score 80 to Baslow, 68 to Parwich. We still just won by 124 – 120. What an effort by the brave, but frozen, few!
Next match – Away – Hathersage – 4 May – 1.45pm.
John B.

Following a recently reported case of Livestock worrying in the Derbyshire Dales area the owner and dog have been identified and the dog destroyed. The dog in question killed one sheep and injured 3 others.
We take matters of livestock worrying seriously and understand the financial impact this can have, especially at this time of year. Although we accept it can be difficult to identify the dogs and their owners please still report it to the police, the above proves positive results can be achieved. This will only assist in promoting the issue and hopefully lead to greater awareness amongst dog owners.
Please report any cases of livestock worrying via 101 or alternatively if you have any information relating to livestock worrying or any other rural matters please e-mail DRCT@derbyshire.pnn.police.uk.

Concerns are growing for missing Derby man
|
Krzysztof Kubiak of Burton Road in Derby last spoke to his family in January this year.
Since then the 34 year-old has not been in contact and concerns are growing for him.
Anyone that may have seen Mr Kubiak or knows of his whereabouts is asked to contact Derbyshire police quoting incident number 275 of April 12.

Anyone else seeing flaky BT broadband service? Over the past couple of weeks or so, I’ve seen around 10 or so short periods of zero internet connectivity here at Alsop, but this afternoon topped the lot at around four hours total. BT claim all is well.

No. 3 April 2017
It’s great to see Big Bill back at the helm at Leatherbritches. Mrs. Monty and I called in to pick up a few plants and found Bill in top form. Our quick stop took an hour and a half (boy can Bill talk, 🙂 ) and we came away loaded with a great selection of plants not to mention some great tips on dealing with slugs and snails. This involved vaseline, garlic and copious amounts of boiling water so probably best not to go into details here!
For this month’s project, plant of the month and garden jobs, Continue Reading »

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB
Having got off to a reasonable start this season and getting to grips with the new go faster equipment, we were all looking forward to the second week on the green. Shame a couple of wheels fell off.
Tuesday League
April 18 – Away – Matlock Golf Club.
Why is it that against certain Clubs you can really struggle and others seem to suit? Unfortunately the Golf Club are, for us, the struggling variety. Although we won two of the four games and only missed winning a third by one point, the remaining game was a real choker for our pair. Sometimes what ever you try comes off sometimes not, it happens. The result was a win for the Golf Club 72 – 63. We will have to try and get our revenge later in the year.
Next Match – Whitworth Park – Home – 25 April 6.30pm.
Thursday League
April 20 – Home – Youlgrave.
At least we were able to play Youlgrave on our green first. Their green as you may recall has an elephant buried underneath it. So we had what may be described as a more level playing field by having the match here. Having said that a crown green bowls green by it’s very name ain’t level. Anyway we won one of the doubles games, with Edith and Sue doing us proud. Unfortunately we came second in the other two games and trailed by 38 – 54.
In the six singles games we won 5 out of the 6 games. Dawn A, bringing the power of the new ‘Blue Meany’ bowls to bear, had a handsome 15 – 8 win, matched by Edith and John H. Top of the tree however was Tony A who won 15 – 5. The singles score finished 83 – 56 to Parwich. The overall result was Parwich 121, Youlgrave 110.
Next match – Away – Baslow – 27 April – 1.45pm.
We are also having another Club match on Saturday 22 April – a mixed doubles – come down to Parsons Croft around 2.30pm to have a look. (and a cup of tea if you fancy it)

A white transit van has been driving around Parwich and came past our house a few times very slowly, Paul went out and they said they were looking for the village hall. He gave them directions but they didn’t go there so we can only presume it was suspect. I’d like to think not but you never know (unfortunately) . Lucy B
