Thanks to all who voted in our long-running “Parwich’s favourite country pub” survey. From an original list of fifty pubs – all within approximately 10 miles’ driving distance of Parwich – we can now announce the Top Three.
In third position, we have The George at Alstonefield.
Since being taken over by Emily Hammond in 2007, The George has shifted its focus towards high quality dining, in its simply but smartly refurbished restaurant. Meanwhile, the compact bar area remains cosy and welcoming.
A reminder that next Monday morning Parwich Primary School are having a community open coffee morning. We would like as many people as possible from the local community to come along.
Do you live in one of the communities served by the school – Parwich, Alsop, Ballidon, Pikehall, Bradbourne, Tissington etc? If so, please come and have a coffee with us, take a look around the school, meet the staff and pupils and find out how you could be involved in school life.
Anyone and everyone is welcome – you could be a former pupil, you could have a child or grandchild at the school currently or you might have no direct connection with the school at all.
It is fantastic to see that this week the fundraising for the new Memorial Hall has leapt up another £50,000. This is due to the hard work of the fundraising committee.
So don’t forget to come to AGM and hear the latest exciting updates on new build project. You need to vote to keep this successful Committee Team working on the Project!

This week’s Stunner contains some great publicity – see page 5 – in the form of a big article on the Memorial Hall fund-raising. As I am new to the area, I may well have missed other mentions of local people in the Stunner so please feel free to add comments if you see that I’ve missed any local news.

Stepping up efforts for Memorial Hall – p.5
A fantastic article about the fund-raising being carried out for the Memorial Hall together with a picture of Jo-Anne Jewett handing over a cheque to Mike Gerard-Pearse. The article sets out the amounts already received and suggests that readers of The Stunner visit Parwich.org for information and contacts if they have any fund-raising ideas. Let’s hope for a big response to this article.

Greetings from across the border –
I just had to share this clip of Ashbourne Removals successfully getting our grand piano over the balcony into the new Nottingham parsonage …
Our thanks go to Patti and Brian Beasley, for hosting such an enjoyable – and delicious! – fund-raising evening, in aid of the Memorial Hall redevelopment project. Those who attended feasted themselves on Beef Goulash with dumplings and red cabbage, followed by Apple Strudel and whipped cream.
This morning, we bade a sad farewell to the tree which had stood for over 30 years on the junction of Creamery Lane and Monsdale Lane.
Originally planted in honour of the Queen’s 1977 Silver Jubilee, the tree was condemned by the Peak Park’s inspectors as having grown too big for its surroundings. A new, smaller tree will eventually be taking its place on the same spot.
Parwich artist Lewis Noble has spent a large part of the past year working within the grounds of the Chatsworth estate, and producing a collection of over thirty pictures on the theme of “Chatsworth Reflected”. The collection will be exhibited at Chatsworth from next Wednesday (March 11th), when the house and gardens re-open to the public for the 2009 season.
As part of the BBC’s Video Nation project, Lewis has been filmed at work on the collection, and talking about the creative processes that were involved. Click here to watch the five-minute film.
Don’t forget it is Panto Rehearsals tomorrow at 2pm in the Memorial Hall when the script will be handed out and parts allocated. Any more people interested in helping or taking a staring role can turn up. The only hint that will be given about type of production is that it involves lots of men in tights…..
Rehearsals will be every Sunday at 2pm (except on St Georges Day) in the Memorial Hall.
An information event takes place today between 4pm and 8pm on Friday 6th March 2009 at Ashbourne Police Station about becoming a Special Constable. This is a chance for people to find out more, pick up an application form and meet current Special Constables. For more details see their website, http://www.derbyshire.police.uk/careers/8.html or call 0345 123 33 33.
There is a notice on The Green saying that there will be no more fish & chips in Parwich because of lack of trade. So it is back to cooking on a Friday night.
Maybe if the village had not been messed around on dates just after Christmas, with people turning up for fish & chips and no van, then the support would have continued. Reliability is the key.
Having started with a pool of fifty country pubs – all within an approximate ten mile driving distance from the centre of Parwich – our four regional heats have whittled the number down to a final twelve. But which of these is Parwich’s favourite? We’re about to start finding out.
For our grand final, we’ve made a couple of changes to the voting system. Firstly, you will only be permitted to vote for ONE pub – so please choose carefully! Secondly, you won’t be able to view the results until we announce them on the blog – which will take place on Friday March 13th.
Finally, do please feel free to lobby for your favourite pub in the comments!
This week’s News Telegraph is full of Shrovetide Football, with plenty of discussion about the event, both for and against. As a result there doesn’t appear to be any mention of Parwich. Articles that may be of interest to our readers are highlighted below. Remember that you can buy your copy of the paper at The Sycamore or click here to read the the online e-edition.
Derbyshire Constabulary is launching a recruitment campaign for Special Constables across various locations in the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales. Special Constables are unpaid volunteers who receive training so they can work closely with regular officers to help police their communities. Applications are welcomed from people of all backgrounds and walks of life. Special Constables must agree to volunteer for a minimum of four hours per week.
Community Safety Inspector Tony Dales said: “We’re holding these events to highlight the valuable contribution Specials make to the force and the communities in which they serve.” “Being a Special can be an extremely rewarding experience and it would be great to see local people who are interested in developing their skills and helping their local neighbourhood.”

A big thank you to all who turned up on Friday despite the bad timing with the rugby clash and film night! The next gathering of thesps is on Sunday at 2pm in the Memorial Hall when the script will be handed out and parts allocated.
