What’s On

Based on Richard Osman’s international bestselling novel of the same name, The Thursday Murder Club follows four irrepressible retirees — Elizabeth (Helen Mirren), Ron (Pierce Brosnan), Ibrahim (Ben Kingsley) and Joyce (Celia Imrie) — who spend their time solving cold case murders for fun. When an unexplained death occurs on their own doorstep, their casual sleuthing takes a thrilling turn as they find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands.

I’m taking part in the Chatsworth 10k to help raise money for this amazing charity. Please take a minute to read about their work:

Blythe House Hospice offers counselling and bereavement support for any child aged from 4 to 18 years old whose loved one has died or who is living with a life-limiting illness. They also support patients, families and carers living across Derbyshire.

In addition to that they provide high quality 24/7 end of life care at home, offering patients at all stages of illness, family members and carers counselling; physio, occupational therapy, group support, specialist palliative clinics and nursing services.

Blythe House has, and still is providing support for us and so many other families who have suffered the loss of a parent or loved one. The guidance and support we’ve received has been the light at the end of the tunnel, they are a cup of tea when you really need one, they are a peaceful space to access invaluable help and advice from experienced counsellors.

Please donate what you can to help this amazing charity to continue to support children and families.

Oddfellows Fun Night

Not sure if I should be pitching this photo to Derbyshire Life or the Racing Post, but I opted for Parwich.Org

Thank you to Parwich RBL Club and Parwich Oddfellows for a great evening from all at Parwich Cricket Club.

Bowls Club – EDITORIAL

You may have already heard on THE TELEGRAPH, (though the casual OBSERVER may not yet be enlightened,) that Parwich have finished second in the Matlock Thursday League and thus won the coveted promotion spot to Division One.

And what an end to the Season it was! On the final day we all trooped over to Chatsworth in dreadful conditions, only to find the green almost totally underwater battered by rain, wind and MAIL-strom; quite obvious that the match was to be called off half an hour before the start time. A conflab ensued, the outcome of which was that we EXPRESSed a desire to reconvene on Sunday morning to play what was a vital match for us.

THE SUNDAY PEOPLE of Parwich, together with some travelling SPECTATORs were up and breakfasted early, before THE MORNING STAR had left the sky, and the determined bunch made their way once again to Chatsworth. Our League position dictated that we didn’t actually have to win to finish in the top two, merely to avoid defeat by the comfortable margin of 81 points; only a complete disaster would have spoiled our party. As THE SUN warmed us over the doubles games it became clearer by the end that we were to achieve our aim and by lunchtime our promotion was well and truly confirmed with a 131 to 124 victory in our favour. Actually most enjoyable at that time of day and a refreshing change to THE EVENING STANDARD contests.

We will therefore be THE GUARDIANs of the Runners-Up Shield for twelve months.

The previous Tuesday a very respectable 77-55 win at home to Whitworth saw us finish in fourth place in the other League; out of 11 very good teams I trust the reader will consider as a worthy achievement.

So good TIMES indeed for Parwich Bowls Club. Over the close season, as well as necessary ground maintenance we should all look in THE MIRROR and proudly reflect on our glories. Thanks go to all our own players and those we’ve MET RO-aming throughout the Derbyshire Peaks over the summer.

And before anyone says it, yes this has been an INDEPENDENT review… That’s all Folks, see you next year.

M.J.

Anyone missing a cat?

This very friendly cat turned up at my backdoor at Rookery House yesterday and has been here all day in the rain. He or she is very friendly, wearing a chip on the collar( presumably to open a cat flap) and looks quite young.

In case anyone is looking for her, she is still  in the garden  and keeps coming to my backdoor.

Just to let you know this coming Sunday (Sept 7th ) at about 3pm, all mobile phones in Britain on 4G and 5G networks will vibrate and emit a siren for up to 10 seconds, even if they are set to silent mode.

The phones will display the message below confirming that the alert is a drill

If you wish to avoid the alert, iPhone users should go to settings, search for “Emergency Alerts”, and turn off “Severe and Emergency Alerts”.

Android users can do the same, also searching for “Emergency Alerts” in settings and switching off “Severe and Emergency Alerts”.

A spokesman said: “Theatres are updating their pre-show announcements to remind audiences to turn phones off completely, helping to minimise disruption.

The AA, meanwhile, recommended that drivers familiarise themselves with the alert sound and vibration and do not interact with the message until they have stopped in a safe place with their engines switched off.

“On the day, drivers should simply stay calm and focus on the road. As always, only check your phone when you’re parked safely with the engine turned off.”
