Ashbourne Breast Cancer Walk

The 2011 Ashbourne Breast Cancer Walk will take place at Carsington Water this Saturday afternoon.

The ABCW website says:

Do something amazing this year and join us on the Ashbourne Breast Cancer Walk, open to walkers of all ages both men and women. Enter as a family or get together some friends from your work, college, school or community. Even get the neighbours involved, every person counts!

The starting point will be the ABCW Marquee, located in the field to the left prior to Carsington Visitor Centre leaving at 2.30pm. Therefore early arrival is recommended for all walkers. Registration is required from all walkers including children.

Click on this picture to go to the ABCW website and find out more or get registered:

As an added bonus, The A52s will be providing entertainment before and after the walk along with two other bands. Last year, it was a hoot with some very sprightly grannies throwing their shapes…..

Who knows what characters will turn up this year!

Businesses of all sizes in the Peak District are being given a strong new voice with the creation of a group to promote the area as a place to do business.

Called Business Peak District the group will be led by a wide range of representatives from the business community. It will represent all businesses in the area covered by the Peak District National Park and the High Peak, Staffordshire Moorlands and Derbyshire Dales districts or boroughs.

All businesses are being invited to join an event to find out about the group and its plans at Thornbridge Hall, near Great Longstone, on Monday 16 May, 5-8pm.  It doesn’t matter how big or small your business is.  Maybe you are even thinking of starting a new business.

Film Night Tonight

From the director of Calendar Girls comes a new comedy-drama with an all-star British cast.

The film stars the award winning Sally Hawkins as Rita O’Grady, who is the catalyst for the 1968 Ford Dagenham strike by 187 sewing machinists which led to the advent of the Equal Pay Act. Working in extremely impoverished conditions and for long arduous hours, the women at the Ford Dagenham plant finally lay down their tools when they are reclassified as “unskilled”.

With humour, common sense and courage they take on their corporate paymasters, an increasingly belligerent local community, and finally the government itself. The leader of the women’s struggle is fast-talking, no nonsense Rita, whose fiery temper and occasionally hilarious unpredictability proves to be a match for any of her male opponents, and is echoed by Barbara Castle’s struggle in the male-dominated House of Commons.

The film stars a host of Britain’s finest acting talent, including Sally Hawkins (Happy-Go-Lucky, It’s A Wonderful Afterlife), Bob Hoskins (The Long Good Friday, Mona Lisa), Miranda Richardson (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), and Rosamund Pike (Pride & Prejudice, An Education).

In the warm and comfortable Parwich Memorial Hall on
Friday 15th April at 7.45pm.
Free Entrance … Refreshments … Raffle
Silent projection … Hi Fi Sound … Special hi-fi headphones for those with hearing difficulties; please ask.

We had our first practice session on Monday night. A new lady member came down to have a try. Very good too. We also had two young men ( aged 11 and 10 ) who also played a number of ‘ends’ A good evening all round.

Our first league match takes place this Thursday at home. As was mentioned in the earlier comment, it is against Bradwell. The match starts at 1.45pm and usually finishes at about 4.15/4.30pm.

If you have the time on Thursday afternoon, why not come to the green and have a look? You may even get a nice cup of tea or coffee.

A very special visit.

UPDATE: We hope you enjoyed this April Fool’s post. Needless to say, not a word of it is true!

PARWICH.ORG is delighted to announce some very exciting news for the village. The Prince William and his new wife, Catherine, are planning to spend some time in Parwich as part of their honeymoon tour of the UK. Although the exact date is still being kept as a strict state secret, we can confirm that they will be staying at Tom’s Barn for two nights in the spring.

In order to provide the happy couple with maximum privacy during their stay, residents of Monsdale Lane will be asked to vacate their homes for the duration of the royal visit. However, special four-poster camp beds will be provided in the Memorial Hall for all those affected.

To mark the event, a “red white and blue” Royal Wedding tulip has been specially bred and bulbs have already been secretly planted along Monsdale Lane. Fingers crossed that they will be at their peak, to coincide with the royal visit.

Additionally, some of the village twitchers have been secretly training our small population of Jenkins Thrushes to incorporate parts of the National Anthem into their song.
