This week’s Stunner

Available on line or in the Sycamore, this week’s Ashbourne News Telegraph has only one article of real local interest this week which is the ongoing saga of the road slip on the B5056:

p.2 Land slip fears fail to subsideanother article on the landslip on the B5056 by the Bentley Brook – the council are now considering trying to repair the road in late May or early June of this year but the road will be closed during the works.  No weight restriction will be issued on this road however.  P.4 – contains a comment article on the same issue.

p.3 – Camera watch – watch your speed if you’re heading into or out of Derby on the A52 this week as police are using speed cameras on that stretch this week.

This week’s Stunner

Ashbourne News Telegraph seem to be publishing their on-line e-newspaper earlier on Wednesdays but, if you prefer paper in your newspaper, go to Janet in the Sycamore for today’s edition.

p.1 – Is Ashbourne ready for a French Connection? Ashbourne is going to be asked whether it would like to be twinned with the French town of Soisy-sur-Seine in Northern France.  Does anyone in Parwich know the town?  Would Parwich then be twinned with a village five miles outside Soisy only reachable by a road liable to imminent collapse?  Does the outlying village have its own band?  Is it named after a local A road?

Thank you from the Jaguar Drivers

A thank you from members of South Staffs Jaguar Drivers.

The 26th April turned out to be a glorious Spring day for us all. Our members enjoyed some wonderful driving in their classic cars and a most enjoyable afternoon at Crich Tramway Village.

Members have asked me to express their delight at passing through Parwich and being held up by your Brass Band procession, not a hindrance but a bonus.

We try to enjoy our vehicles without inconvenience to others, and I enjoyed returning to the village in the evening for just one drink in the garden of The Sycamore.

Wishing you well.

It’s The Stunner!

In this week’s Stunner (available in the pub as well as on-line):

p.1 Mystery surrounds land slip highway: an article and photo echoing our previous posts and comments on the state of the B5056 at Fenny Bentley.  The slip was probably caused by the floods last summer but will be difficult and expensive to fix since the hillside is made of slippery shale.  Derbyshire County Council will shortly be investigating the cause and extent of the slip following which they will be looking at when to carry out the work.  They do not rule out closing the road whilst the work is being carried out.

This morning we received an email from Peak District National Park and we are delighted that they are regular readers of Parwich.org.  It shows that our blog goes much further than our immediate community.  We know that Derbyshire Police and The Ashbourne Telegraph are also regular users of this site.

Dear Parwich.org,

I saw in your newspaper summary an item about Patrick McLoughlin wanting to know what the Peak District National Park Authority is doing about the high rate of motorbike accidents. You may find this link to chief executive Jim Dixon’s weekly blog useful. It’s the article called “A Darker Side to Visiting the Peak District.” Best Wishes….

This Week in The Stunner

News relevant to the village is somewhat light this week, so here are some stories that are almost on our doorstop.  Remember that you can buy your News Telegraph at The Sycamore or read it on-line.

p4 & P5 – “This fiasco over fungi is a marriage made in hell – Not much fun-gi! “- Sir Richard at Tissington Hall hits the headlines twice in his dispute with the National Park over rare mushrooms which are stopping Ashbourne & Tissington’s tourist industry – the dispute is over planning permission for a marquee for weddings on his grass, which may harbour these rare fungi.

P4 “MP demands action against illegal road racers on A515” & “Black Spot claims another rider’s life”. Concerns are being expressed by our MP about the speed safety measure on the A515.  We have all seen the multitude of signs that adorn the roads warning motorists of bikers, but Patrick McLoughlin wants to know what Peak Park are doing to tackle the problem.  Also on the A5012 near Via Gellia, a biker was killed on Sunday.

p9 “Overall crime is down in Dales – but burglaries rocket in last 12 months”.    Supt Paul Rouse says “That the statistics prove that Derbyshire really is a relatievely safe place to live.  However I would advise people not to become too complacent.”

Letters, Page 8: “An inspiration to everyone.”
Page 24: “The Best Parliamentarian We Never Had.

Tribute is paid this week to Robert ‘Bob’ Goodall of Kniveton, who died last week at the age of 92. A staunch opponent of British membership of the European Union, Mr Goodall unsuccessfully fought seven parliamentary elections on behalf of his own English Resurgance Party. He also contested the Brassington and Parwich ward of what was then the West Derbyshire District Council.

This week’s Stunner

Apologies for the late posting of this item due to forgetfulness on the part of the person responsible.  Unless I have missed things out, there is very little local news in this week’s edition.  As usual, you can buy the Stunner from Janet in the pub or read the e-edition online although at the time of publishing this post, the News Telegraph website was still linking to last week’s version.

p.6 – Trailer safety flaw led to suspension of licence – The owner of a tractor business in Alsop had his licence suspended for almost a week after failing to ensure his vehicles were safely maintained. (more…)

This week’s Stunner

This week’s edition of the Ashbourne News Telegraph contains a few stories of local interest.  Don’t forget you can buy it from Janet in the Sycamore or access the free e-edition by following this link.

p.3 – Hope for Flood Protection

A meeting has been organised in Ashbourne between Severn Trent, the Environment Agency, Derbyshire Dales District Council and Derbyshire County Council to discuss the future of flooding protection in Ashbourne following last summer’s floods.  The Environment Agency has confirmed that a flood alleviation scheme is under way in Ashbourne.  Although not of direct interest to Parwich, it begs the question as to whether flood alleviation measures are also being carried out in Parwich.

p.4 – Seeking firms to sponsor bra walk fund-raiser

Again, a headline which caught my eye – sponsorship is being sought for a sponsored walk around Carsington Water in aid of breast cancer charities to take place on May 16 at 2pm.  Participants will be encouraged to wear a decorated bra for the event.  And don’t forget, we are also still seeking firms to sponsor the building of the new Parwich Memorial Hall – for more information, follow this link. This week’s Stunner

This week’s Stunner contains some great publicity – see page 5 – in the form of a big article on the Memorial Hall fund-raising.  As I am new to the area, I may well have missed other mentions of local people in the Stunner so please feel free to add comments if you see that I’ve missed any local news.

Don’t forget you can buy the paper in The Sycamore or click here for the e-edition

Stepping up efforts for Memorial Hall – p.5
A fantastic article about the fund-raising being carried out for the Memorial Hall together with a picture of Jo-Anne Jewett handing over a cheque to Mike Gerard-Pearse.  The article sets out the amounts already received and suggests that readers of The Stunner visit Parwich.org for information and contacts if they have any fund-raising ideas.  Let’s hope for a big response to this article.

“Tim-berrrr!”

This morning, we bade a sad farewell to the tree which had stood for over 30 years on the junction of Creamery Lane and Monsdale Lane.

Originally planted in honour of the Queen’s 1977 Silver Jubilee, the tree was condemned by the Peak Park’s inspectors as having grown too big for its surroundings. A new, smaller tree will eventually be taking its place on the same spot.

This week’s News Telegraph is full of Shrovetide Football, with plenty of discussion about the event, both for and against.  As a result there doesn’t appear to be any mention of Parwich.  Articles that may be of interest to our readers are highlighted below.  Remember that you can buy your copy of the paper at The Sycamore or click here to read the the online e-edition.

Thanks to John F-S for sending us this report:

Fifty or so of Chris Harrison’s former parishioners boarded a Warrington’s coach on Sunday afternoon to attend ‘The licensing by the Lord Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham and Installation by the Archdeacon of Nottingham of the Reverend Christopher Harrison as Priest-in-Charge’.

The installation was an impressive service sustained by beautiful music and singing in one of Chris’s three new parish churches. Afterwards we were generously entertained to tea and cakes. We left feeling that Chris has a huge, exciting and demanding task ahead of him – we look forward to seeing him from time to time when he returns ‘home’ for a bit of refreshing country air.

This Week’s “Stunner”

The first edition for 2009 of “The Stunner” is, like last week a little on the thin side.  Obviously not too much news around.  So this week the links to Parwich are slightly more tenuous.   To read this week’s e-edition online click here.

p1.  “New Year brings new sighting of ‘black beast’, as spotted by Ralph, founder of the Y-Not-Festival held near Pikehall.
p2. “Monitoring crime on your patch.” – A new police website is aiming to keep us informed on crime rates.  Tissington Safer Neighbourhood area (covers Parwich) statistics state that crime is down by 11.1%.
p7. “Time to recycle your Christmas tree” Derbyshire Dales Council are encouraging recycling.  Put your tree out at the edge of your property by 7am on your “green” collection day between 5th & 30th January, and as long as it is no higher than 5ft it will be collected, otherwise chop it down to size.

Bleak outlook for Hartington cheese makers

The advertiser reports this week that the Competition Commission has finished its provisional investigation into the takeover of Hartington cheese factory.  It concludes that with out Long Clawson Dairy takeover, Dairy Crest’s Blue Stilton factory would close down anyway, shortly after Christmas – it has been making a loss for years.    The downturn in the factory’s profitability has been partly put down to a decline in the quality of cheese going back to 2001 when expensive new equipment was brought into the site, they lost customers like Sainsbury’s.  The Hartington Creamery was founded in 1870 and has been used for the production of Stilton since 1900.

The Commission has invited the public to have their say on the finding, please email stilton@cc.gsi.gov.uk before January 9th.

This Week’s Stunner

This week’s Stunner may only be a very slim edition, but as usual there is plenty of  Parwich-related content to read about.  Due to technical problems at Burton on Trent they are not sure when the paper will be on-line, that is why the usual links we put on are not available.  Links now available.  Why not read the whole paper, click here for the  on line version.

Page 2.  “Cash harvest for schools’ growers”.  Parwich Primary School kept up the village’s current streak by attracting the highest figure in the area, scooping £7860 to grow their own fruit & veg.  Their slice of the £510,000 will be invested in tools, a greenhouse, propagators, plants & seeds.

Page 3.  “Credit crunch?  Not here, say retailers”.  Ashbourne appears to be avoiding the worst of the economic doom & gloom with many traders reporting a successful Christmas.  New managing director of Bennetts, Simon Ingham said it was “too early” to say for sure how well they did over Christmas.

Page 6 & 7.  “Speech day awards for QEGS high-flyers”

Page 8.  “May’s legacy ends its 10-year blessing”.  May Heathcote of Bradbourne left all her money to benefit the community,  the trust set up in her name has awarded nearly half a million pounds & has now completed their job.  A number of organisations in Parwich benefited from this trust, including The Over 60’s Club, Parwich Youth Club, Parwich Crown Green Bowling Club and Parwich First Responders.

Page 9.  “Army officer plans new manoeuvres”.  Simon Ingham a former army officer, now living in Parwich is the new managing director of Bennetts, he will also oversee the company branches in Derby and Bakewell.  He is keen to support local businesses, charities, artists and designers and will have specific 10% sales of which 5% will be passed on to charity, benefiting the whole community.  Speaking about Parwich he said “Parwich is a beautiful place,  I enjoy living and working here and really enjoy the countryside”.

This week’s Stunner.

As so often seems to be the case these days, there’s plenty of Parwich-related content in this week’s Ashbourne News Telegraph…

They say that good things come in threes. Following last week’s Big Lottery Fund grant of £500,000 towards the redevelopment of Parwich Memorial Hall, and Tom Chambers’ spectacular success in Strictly Come Dancing, some of us were left wondering what our third stroke of good fortune would be.

And now we know! We’re grateful to our friends at the Ashbourne News Telegraph for passing on the excellent news that Parwich Primary School has been awarded a grant of nearly £8000, as part of Derbyshire County Council’s “Growing Better Together” funding initiative. This award is amongst the highest given to any of the schools on the list.

The funding is designed to encourage Derbyshire youngsters to:

  • Plan, plant, grow and eat healthy food
  • Share experience and knowledge by working alongside older people, parents, voluntary groups and horticulture/conservation organisations in their communities.

Update: Thanks to Christopher Harrison for pointing us in the direction of this Press Association article on Parwich’s reaction to Tom’s win.

“Everyone was really happy for him when he won. It’s a close-knit community and everyone knows him.” – Janet, landlady of the Sycamore.

“People know him here as Tom and it’s strange to think of him as a celebrity because he’s so normal when he comes back to the village.” – Reverend Christopher Harrison.
