Report from AGM – March 26th 2008

The Carnival Committee held a successful & well attended AGM in the Royal British Legion last Wednesday, March 26th.

Chairman Denis Laycock welcomed a full complement of existing committee members together with newcomers Sharon Swindell (making a welcome return after an absence of several years) and Louise Laycock. He was able to report on a successful Wakes Week last year. In spite of adverse weather our only losses to planned events had been the Village market on Wakes Saturday and children’s sports on the Monday. We had certainly been more fortunate than many villages organising similar events. Other events druing the year had included a successful November 5th bonfire and the annual ‘Carols on the Green’, both of which had been well supported.

None of this would have been possible without the hard work of committee members and several long standing supporters who always make themselves available when needed. We owe them all a big ‘thank you’.

Treasure Roger Cundy was able to report a satisfactory bank balance. The accounts – kindly audited by Peter Rawlins – showed that Wakes had make a slight profit, due to an excellent collection of £190 on the Saturday, and the very successful ball race. Profits go towards the village bonfire and the carol evening.

The elections showed all existing committee members willing to stand again and with newcomers we now have a good sized committee, with a good balance of age groups. We are however always keen to welcome any newcomers. Wakes Week itself is very demanding, and to be honest, we cannot have too many members! Roger Cundy and Sandra Chadfield were re-elected as Treasurer and Secretary, and Denis Laycock remains as Chairman.

The first Committee Metting followed on from the AGM when we began making arranges for this year’s Wakes Week. After all, it is only 12 weeks away!

Thank you to Denis Laycock for submitting this report.

New Parwich quarry alarm.

Warning: As befits its date of posting, what you are about to read is 100% false. We hope that you enjoyed our momentary lapse into April Foolery. Normal service will now be resumed.

Our sources have informed us that planning consent is being sought for a new quarry between Parwich and Tissington. Geologists have confirmed that in this area limestone of particularly high quality is located, and early indications are that the planning authorities will be persuaded that this quarry will provide a much needed boost to the local economy. Local landowners were not available to comment, however, and it remains to be seen what impact this quarry will have on the competitive position of other quarries in the area.

Villagers are being urged to express their views, initially through this website, following which a co-ordinated submission to the planning authorities will be made.

Warning: As befits its date of posting, what you are about to read is 100% false. We hope that you enjoyed our (second) momentary lapse into April Foolery. Normal service will now be resumed.

From next Sunday, a new church bell system will be installed in St Peter’s church, replacing our existing set-up.

Taking full advantage of Internet technology, the new system will allow us to download bell patterns from a central database of over 10,000 “ring tones”, thus removing the need for manual intervention.

As Christopher Harrison says, “With such a wide range of ring tones available, including many much loved “tracks” from the “hit parade”, I see this as a great opportunity to bring Parwich church into the 21st century.”

To mark the occasion, we are asking readers of PARWICH.ORG to help select the inaugural ring tone for Sunday morning. Please take a look at the list below (as selected by members of the PCC), and vote for your favourite in the comments box.

The tone which picks up the most votes by the end of today will be “ringing out” over Parwich on Sunday morning, on our new “state of the art” 20,000 Watt sound system.

(To help you make your selections, click on each song name to listen.)

Option 1: You’re Beautiful (James Blunt)
Option 2: When You Believe (Leon Jackson)
Option 3: Shine (Take That)
Option 4: Never Gonna Give You Up (Rick Astley)
Option 5: Axel F (Crazy Frog)
Option 6: Won’t Get Fooled Again (The Who)

Direct Bus to Derby Stops

The direct bus service from Parwich to Derby that went every other Friday has been discontinued (as of 23rd March 2008). For the people that used the service this is a big loss. Now if people want to get to Derby by public transport (as well as to anywhere else) they have to change at Ashbourne. There is quite a good bus service from Ashbourne to Derby, but the Parwich bus does not always connect with it, potentially meaning that a 20 mile journey can take 3 hours or more, not ideal for a shopping trip or visiting friends and family in hospital. To commute to anywhere other than Ashbourne by public transport is an impossibility.

The 449 to Bakewell, which runs alternate Mondays continues as normal, which, unlike the Derby service, is not an essential journey for most of our bus users.

There have also been changes to who provides the 411 service to Ashbourne, so check for any timetable changes.

We are planning a section on the site covering transport links, so do let us know abut any public transport, taxi or other relevant information you have to share, or want to find out about. Also share any praises of or grips with the public transport serving Alsop, Ballidon, Parwich and Pikehall. Alternatively if you don’t use public transport tell us why not.

Readers of the gardening magazine Bises will already have seen the feature on Church Cottage Garden by the photographer Jerry Harpur in their April edition (We think?). Jerry Harpur photographed several Parwich gardens (Gardener’s Cottage, Creamery Cottage and Church Cottage) last summer and the images are beginning to appear around the world.

For those who do not regularly subscribe to Japanese magazines here are a couple of pages from the six page spread. Sorry we have not completed the translation into English quite yet.

Lewis Noble: A Year At Chatsworth.

Parwich artist Lewis Noble is to spend a year working with Chatsworth, making a body of work in response to the estate. The project starts in May 2008, and will culminate in a major exhibition in London, in May 2009. The paintings will also preview at Chatsworth, probably in April 2009.

Lewis spent two months at Chatsworth in 2001 as part of the Vickers Art Award. He will be working both on site and in his Parwich studio.

“I’m relishing the idea of returning to Chatsworth and I want to produce paintings that reflect the many different aspects of place. I can’t say exactly what form the finished work will take as I always like to respond directly to what I see and experience. I don’t want to put any limitations on it”

From May 2008, you will be able to follow his progress on the Lewis Noble Chatsworth Project website. Here you will find the artist’s blog, his image diary, and a chance to view the artwork as it is completed.

Here are some photographs from the grand opening of the new village shop, inside the Sycamore. Our local TV celebrity Tom Chambers was on hand to congratulate Janet, as were a whole crowd of well-wishers.

Inside the shop, you’ll find all the essentials, including fresh fruit and vegetables, free range Parwich eggs, tea, coffee, cereals, fresh bread, dairy products, canned and frozen food, household goods, sweets and crisps, and (as you would expect from a pub!) beer, wine and spirits. And if you’re quick off the mark, there are even some Easter eggs for sale.

As an added bonus, lunchtime and evening shoppers can stop and enjoy a pint or a glass of wine with their purchases – and what could be more civilised than that!

Thanks to John Fuller Sessions and Kevin Slater for the photos. To view the full set, please click here.

Parwich in The Derbyshire Magazine.

Following on from last year’s cover splash in Derbyshire Life, there’s a lengthy six-page feature on Parwich in the April edition of The Derbyshire Magazine, containing many colour photographs of the village and its inhabitants, as well as interviews with a wide range of villagers. The reporter has done a fine and detailed job, and the article is well worth a read.

Copies of The Derbyshire Magazine are on sale in the new shop, priced at £1.75.

Bradbourne Mill

Our thanks to Alan Gifford, for mailing us this update on Bradbourne Mill.

Much as I would like to have seen this lovely building stay as a water mill, it was not to be and Amos Developments Ltd. are making a good job of the work on site. Much of the approved conversion, other than of the mill, is in the late stages of activity.

In the mill, the top floor has been panelled but the old sack hoist has been retained in place.

On the stone floor, the ruin of the dresser has been removed and the the best pieces conserved. The removal operation was well recorded. A new staircase is in place.

The wheel pit has been dug out and the framings of both wheels are clearly visible. These have now been slowly turned by hand. (See photo below.) Both are to be rebuilt and will be recorded, since access is now possible. They will be turned from time to time with recycled water from the mill pond, since there is no direct access to the main stream water.

Bradbourne Mill

Against the recommendation of the Midland Mills Group, planners ruled that the 1750-ish Hurst frame should be enclosed in glass panels, which are currently being installed. About six old mill stones, some 18th Century, have been found and are now displayed in the patio area at the back of the mill.

Overall, considerable effort is being made to try and best preserve into a house conversion the main features of the mill.

Tennis news.

Tennis coaching for juniors starts on Saturday 19th April, for a 6 week block. Any further information can be obtained from Nia Linnell on 01335 390661. The cost is £18 for all 6 sessions. A bargain!

The Parwich Under 12s team won the Southern Derbyshire league last year, so we need to maintain the high standard by getting new talent into the coaching sessions.

New Shop for Parwich?

Watch this space for more information on a new Shop in Parwich.  (And keep your fingers crossed.)  Janet is investigating the possibility of opening a shop in the Sycamore Inn.  It would be in the dining-room and would not have as wide a range of goods as the old shop, but well done Janet!  (NB There is a book in the pub for people to write down their thoughts on a shop at the pub.)

Parwich Spar Shop Closes

Sadly the Shop closed on Friday (29th Feb ’07).  Although I will miss the facility to nip down the road whenever I find I need something, I will miss more the social aspect.  Getting a Sunday paper meant chatting to people in the street, seeing the latest on the notice board; my record time to get a paper was seven hours and involved two impromptu meals.  Alas no more.

Thanks to Emma and Jason for giving us a successful shop for five years, and best wishes to them and the children for the future.
