Thank you to Anthony C for this reminder of what is on our door step:
I made this vid of a visit I made to Haddon Hall last Monday (8th April) with some visitors from the United States.
Honestly, jaws dropped. We sometimes don’t quite appreciate the scale of our heritage!

POSTPONED DUE TO SNOW – TO BE REARRANGED
Hartington’s town crier will summon people to the village pump on Saturday March 30 at 2pm to announce the launch of a new Village Trail.
Peak District National Park Authority chair Tony Favell and Hartington Parish Council will unveil new information panels, while leaflets, local history displays, tea and cakes and a Village Trail prize draw will be available from 12noon to 4.30pm in the Village Hall.
Villagers themselves got together to help create the new Village Trail that leads visitors back in time and encourages them to support local businesses for the future. The trail leaflet features a self-guided map, illustrations by local schoolchildren, and 11 points of interest put together by community groups, exploring the village’s rich heritage from the 1200s to the present day.Aimed at families, adults can enjoy the fact-packed potted histories, and children, led by “Detective Duck,” can test themselves on a treasure-trail of questions. Derby Station Parking
Posted in Out & About on Thursday February 28, 2013| Leave a Comment »
Thank you to Mike R for this information:
Car Parking Derby Station – Be warned
I had a bad experience when I left my car at the Point Parking Site – RingGo 2860 last Wednesday when I was charged at the rate of £1.54p per hour for 15 hours car parking while I was in London for the day – total cost £23.10p Normally I expect to pay about £4.50p for 1 day parking. Next day I complained to the owners who have now refunded me all but 60p. If you are in London for the day, do not pay at the hourly rate, book 1 day instead. Their website advertises short stay car parking at £1.50p per hour and all day parking at £4.50p. I noticed the car park was almost empty – it is normally full – not surprising!
National Recognition for the Sycamore Inn

Janet and Steve were in London this week (don’t ask Steve about his shirt) for the ‘10 Years On‘ celebrations of Pub is the Hub, an organisation promoting rural pubs initiated by HRH the Prince of Wales. They were very happy to receive recognition at these celebrations for the Sycamore’s role in the local community.

It was Saturday. The sun was out. The ice had melted. All systems were go! Miguel & Roberto – two top Parwich cyclists – decided to pedal over to Hartington.
Having huffed and puffed their way to the village, they were sorely in need of coffee and calories! Both were bowled over by the fantastic Hartington Village Stores which has had new owners since last January.

The shop is well stocked, offering a meat/deli counter, local specialities, puddings and drinks as well as normal everyday groceries. Laura and Rob were very friendly, keeping the Parwich Cycling Team up to speed with the England/All Blacks score and providing fantastic freshly ground coffee.
The stores was built in 1836 and still retains the feel of an old fashioned grocers. Apparently it survived being blown up by a leaking gunpowder barrel which lifted the roof as high as the top of the church!

Refuelled with a fine huntsman’s pie, Miguel and Roberto found the chug back up to Parwich almost easy!

Comedy night in Ashbourne: this Thursday
Posted in Events, Out & About on Tuesday October 2, 2012| Leave a Comment »
The Chimes Cafe in Ashbourne has started running regular stand-up comedy nights, and the next show takes place this Thursday (October 4th) at 8pm. Admittance is £6, and you are encouraged to come earlier and book a pre-show meal.
Thursday’s headliner is Chris Stokes, whose debut show won an award at this year’s Leicester Comedy Festival. Chris has supported Milton Jones on tour, and The Scotsman has described him as “hilarious”.
Also appearing:
- Scott Bennett, “one of the Midlands’ brightest rising stars”, who won Comedy Cellar Best New Act 2011 and Old Speckled Hen Comedian Of the Year 2010.
- James Hately, “a weird and wonderful performer with a spindly ‘pythonesque’ figure and a dazzling imagination”, who “makes use of surreal logic and imagery to bring a magical quality to the everyday.”
- Rob Kemp, “a rising star from Wolverhampton.”
- Bruce Edhouse, “who may well be talking about aubergines… “
The evening is compered by Alan Seaman, who has won praise from Isy Suttie, of Channel 4’s Peep Show: “Alan always makes sure there’s a wide variety of acts and a warm and friendly atmosphere where audiences get value for money. They are always a joy to do.”
Chimes Cafe is at 48 St John Street Ashbourne, DE6 1GH.
