Sheena Bryden

Many of you will know our Reader Sheena Bryden. She has ministered in our Benefice over a number of years, serving on the PCC at Parwich and with particular responsibility, in recent times, for the church family service at Tissington.

Sheena has felt for some time, that God is calling her to exercise her ministry in the Ashbourne Benefice (where she lives). The Diocese has considered this and has decided to grant her request. The date set by the Diocese for Sheena’s transfer is the end of November, which doesn’t give us time to say a proper thank you and good-bye. Therefore, we will say good-bye to Sheena during our 11am service at Parwich on January 30th. I’m sure you all join me in thanking Sheena for her ministry in the Benefice and in praying for her through this time of transition.

Revd Andy Larkin.

Sheena has become a good friend to many locally, so parwich.org would like to take this opportunity to wish her all the best for the future.

Heather’s Jewellery Means Business

From an early age Heather H has loved making arts and crafts. A while ago she started creating funky jewellery such as necklaces, bracelets and earrings. Last year, when she needed to raise money to fund her Duke of Edinburgh expedition, she started selling some of her work on stalls at the St. George’s Day Fayre, Wakes Week and Wirksworth Farmers’ Market.

Her jewellery-making skills have steadily developed. Some of her work has recently been taken by the Opus Gallery in Ashbourne. This picture shows Catherine from Opus Gallery and Heather selecting items of jewellery to be displayed.

(I have previously bought some items from Heather as presents, which went down very well, so would recommend having a look in Opus when doing your Christmas shopping.)

Christopher sent the following to several people locally and has agreed to it going on the Blog:

Greetings from Nottingham –

I have mentioned to some of you that a couple of friends and I have formed a flute-cello-piano trio which will be giving a concert next Tuesday evening in Derby. The programme is entirely French – a trio by Debussy written when he was 18, a trio by Faure written when he was 77, and a rather sentimental piece by the flautist Philippe Gaubert (no, I hadn’t heard of him either, but it’s rather fun in a kind of pre-First World War way).

I think the concert is free, but you have to pay 25 pence for coffee and biscuits (see the attached programme).

This is something of a new departure for me, and it’s been great to find a very lively amateur musical environment here in Nottingham. If any of you can come that would be fantastic!

best wishes
Christopher Harrison

Tom in OK Magazine

There is an interview with Tom Chambers and Gethin Jones on the OK magazine website.  Also the feature contains several recipes: celebrity gossip and sexy food photos.

From the 19th of November to the 1st January Tom is appearing in White Christmas in the Sunderland Empire.  This is a great theatre from the heyday of Music Hall.

Rumor has it that there may be a coach trip being organised from Parwich to see White Christmas, so if you are interested watch this space or speak to Stuart.

Andrew Robinson 1937-2010

To all our friends in Parwich,

How can I find words to thank you for all the love and comfort that you have shown to Andrew during his illness, and now to me and my family as we face life without him.

Your wonderful cards, phone calls and offers of help brought Andrew much happiness and encouragement as I took them into hospital each day. He just loved Parwich, and all of you, and our years of retirement here were some of the happiest of our lives.

It was so comforting that he knew of the love that surrounded him. We just wish that he could have seen everyone at work in the Church getting ready for the funeral service. Thank you for all the beautiful flowers and foliage you brought from your gardens, and all the time and skill you gave so freely to make the Church look so beautiful. My family and I found it very moving to see you all at work and hear the shared memories of Andrew’s life here.

And now the healing goes on as I receive your loving messages of sympathy. Two passages in the Bible were very special to us – Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life; they who believe in me shall never die” and “Nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord”.

Parwich were represented by 4 runners in the Ashbourne half marathon and fun run.  Bertie L the 6th boy to finish the fun run, just ahead of Izzy P who was the third girl to finish.

In the half marathon Sue P was only a few minutes ahead of Graham J, he was running his first half marathon and has never run more than 10 miles.  Both runners finished in less that 1 hour 50 minutes, on what is considered a tough course, going up a number of hills near Thorpe and Blore before finishing back at the rugby ground.

Well done to everyone – a great morning.

Hayley Powell’s first piece of blacksmith art was creating the cuckoo for the field in Monsdale Lane, now better known as the Cuckoo Field. This piece of art was made when she was only 16, studying for her A Levels at QEGS. Hayley grew up in Parwich, she always loved walking around the countryside and could be seen regularly walking the family dog Axel: the Irish Wolfhound.

Not always happy with the conventional methods of learning, Hayley hunted out extra curriculum workshops and events including helping out at art workshops and then becoming heavily involved within an organisation that delivered courses on rural crafts to young people. These included dry stone walling, woodland management at Chatsworth, hedge laying and blacksmithing. Hayley was hooked.

Between studing for a Degree in Design Technology at Derby University she was able to gain work experience with blacksmith Charis Jones, who is still a massive inspiration to her. Once her degree was completed back in June, she decided to follow her heart and really make a difference to preserving the rural skill of blacksmithing.

Hayley, an Artist Blacksmith has called her new business Forever Forged .  She is committed to creating hand forged creative, yet functional items, for your home and garden. Inspired by tradition, forged with passion.

Hayley can be seen at the Wirksworth Art Trail this weekend, 10am-5pm. Her venue will showcase a wide range of fun and artistic pieces, filling the courtyard and garden of the Old Tinsmith.

Tickets for the Trail are £5 and free to under 16’s.  A fabulous opportunity to see more than 100 artists, including Lewis Noble, exhibiting their work in dozens of different venues throughout the town.  There will also be a Makers Market, stalls with food and street entertainment, including the fabulous A52s.

A selection of some of Hayley’s work, more can be seen on her website.

Two ‘Parwichians’ will be exhibiting, Hayley Powell and Lewis Noble with The A52s providing some of the street entertainment.

Hayley, was brought up in Parwich and finished at Derby University in June.  She has set up as an Artist Blacksmith and called her new business Forever Forged.   Forever Forged is committed to creating locally hand forged creative yet functional items, for your home and garden. Inspired by tradition, forged with passion.

The big debut for Forever Forged will be at the Wirksworth Festival and she can be found at the Old Tinsmiths.  Her work will showcase a wide range of fun and artistic pieces taking over the courtyard and garden. Come and fuel your creativity and support a dying skill.

The new website is up so that you can follow Forever Forged on this wonderful journey!  Click here to listen to Hayley talking on Radio Derby, last Wednesday, just fast forward to 14.25 minutes to hear the interview (only available until Tuesday night).

Lewis, well known in the art world, lives in Parwich and has been working in Derbyshire since 1996. Over this time he has built a reputation as one of central England’s foremost artists. His focus lies in the physical and emotional impact of the landscape on the senses and how it the experience of being in landscape effects us as human beings.

The result is a body of work that speaks to the very heart of what it means to be part of the environment around us.

Hiving a Swarm of Bees

This article has been sent in by Mike at Flaxdale Apiary who is supporting Derwent Rural Counselling – if you need help with a swarm ring Mike on 390433.

I am alerted now and again by residents of Parwich who have found a swarm of bees on their land – what should they do?  Several weeks ago in July I found such a swarm hanging from the branch of a damson tree in my croft.  The following describes what I did next:-

1. Obviously you wear protective clothing and use a smoker when you work on a swarm!  In fact this swarm was not aggressive or troublesome at all and I did not bother with a smoker; swarming bees are not normally aggressive because they are engorged with honey. I laid a white sheet on the ground below the swarm covering as wide an area as possible.

2. Using a skep (a woven straw basket shaped container used by beekeepers) or a cardboard box which is what I used, I placed the opened box immediately underneath the swarm with one hand and with the other I shook the branch onto which the swarm was attached and most of the clump of bees fell into the box.  You have to be quite skilful manipulating the box with one hand and shaking the tree branch with the other! This is even more difficult if you have to mount a ladder if the swarm is on an upper branch. A pair of secateurs is useful if you have to cut a stem off a branch.

3. Then I placed the box with the bees inside it on the white sheet on the ground with the opening to the box on its side just open enough for the bees to enter the box.  There were lots of other bees which had fallen on the white sheet and others flying around.  I used a feather  to sweep the other bees off the branch. You want all the bees to end up in the box! (more…)

Earlier this year Ian Pitts, metal detecting in Hallcliffe garden, found a small gold signet ring.  With the date from the hallmarks I started ringing round the previous occupants of the house.

Today the ring was taken to Malcolm and Ruth in Alstonfield, who confirmed it had been made for Ruth by her parents out of gold from the wedding rings of both her grandmothers.  The ring was inscribed with Ruth’s initials, but these are very worn and only identifiable under a magnifying glass.  Their oldest son particularly remembers how distressed his mother was when the ring was lost.  Certainly she was pleased to get it back after some 25 to 30 years.

July/August Church Magazine

The double summer issue Group Magazine for the parishes of Alsop, Fenny Bentley, Parwich, Thorpe and Tissington is now available in each of the Churches.  Alternatively you can have it delivered direct to your door, or click on the cover image below to access it on-line as a pdf.

In his letter the Vicar welcomed Aron Simpson to the parishes:

This month it is my pleasure to introduce you to Aron Simpson.  Many of you will have met Aron already.  Perhaps at one of our fund-raising events or at service.  Aron is training to become a Vicar and is currently a full-time student at St. John’s College Nottingham, which is a Church of England training college.  As part of his course Aron spends time on placement at a church and he has chosen to spend his placement with us.  This will be mainly part-time extending through to Christmas, though in September Aron will be full-time in our parishes.

Aron currently lives in Derby with his wife Bella and daughter Evelyn.  Before entering the ministry he worked for Pizza Express.

People of Parwich will have seen Aron at both our St George’s Day celebrations and on Wakes Saturday, when the above picture was taken.  The Team here at PARWICH.ORG would also like to extend a warm welcome to Aron and his family and hope he finds the placement very productive.

The copy date for the September issue is 25th August 2010.

What an excellent idea and a great evening.

Denis L showed a cine film from the 1960s of Wakes and a slide show of Wakes photos taken over the last 100 years or so on the Parwich Film digital projector now installed in the new Hall.  I did not count the audience but there must have been over 50 or 60 people there, sharing memories.  The loudest responses were to some of the 60s and 70s fashions and Carnival costumes (Val K is very keen to ‘have a strong word’ with whoever handed over to Denis one particular photo).

The Carnival & Recreation Committee had laid on wine and cake, which was avidly consumed as people looked at more photographs that people had brought in and displayed on tables arround the hall. (more…)

As it is official now we can reveal that  Tom Chambers will be taking the leading role in Irving Berlin’s classic ‘White Christmas’, an exciting challenge, as Tom will be taking up the role once performed by Bing Crosby.  It was due to be staged at the London Palladium, but the theatre is having to be ‘revamped’ for the Wizard of Oz and ‘Dorothy’.  ‘White Christmas’ will be shown at the Empire Theatre, Sunderland, a 2200 seater theatre which is the largest theatre outside of London.  The show be on from 19th November to New Year’s Day.
