Townhead House

Following the photographs of Townhead House in a post last year, thank you to Eileen Brownson for sending us several photographs of an oil painting of the house:

townhead

Eileen indicates that this is one of several pictures that

were painted by my Gd Mother Fanny (Brooks) Brownson The little girl was my Auntie Laura Brownson They are oil paintings, we have them here, unfortunately some are badly damaged, my daughter JoAnn has had a few repaired but that is very expensive, the other pictures are of Scottish cattle, I didn’t include those. All are signed by my gd mother and dated, barely recognizable. Glad you can share them with everyone interested.

Given the difficulties in photographing paintings here is another shot of the same view. (more…)

carol-singing-2

What a super evening, there must have been almost 100 people singing on The Green, we even managed an original compilation, Once in Royal David’s City to the tune of Hark the Herald Angels Sing – the original was better than our version. Thanks to Chris for accompanying us and to Barbara, Mary & helpers for providing mulled wine & mince pies. More photos… (more…)

We were delighted to receive a couple of friendly and informative e-mails from Bernard Tapp, who lived at “Stanworth” on the Alsop Road in the 1960s. Over to Bernard…

It was not until I saw the end of “Strictly” last night that I discovered that Tom came from Parwich. My link goes back to 1965 when I was appointed Head Teacher at Clifton Primary School at the age of 31. We had to move from Northampton.

Estate agents in Ashbourne offered us the choice of three farms to buy! Exploration led us to the Moore’s builders and I was offered a plot of land opposite the Legion for £450. Moore designed and built the house I called “Stanworth” (Stone House) and we lived there for four years until I took another post near Bristol. I am Bernard Tapp, my wife, who died in 1997 was Meg, and the three youngsters are Marion, Trevor and Jayne.

I can tell you a few tales of how we were gradually accepted in the village. As Alan and Violet Oldfield said, “When they tell you you are not digging the garden right you are in”. Someone coming out of the Legion did, and we were.

We were “Nobs” according to Alan, and when Col Sir John Crompton Inglefield was unable to open the village fete, Meg was called in at the last minute. She had to buy a hat! I remember he called his wife Bunty.

We were friendly with Cath and Cliff Goldstraw, but they have both passed on. My dog once sat outside the Sycamore all night in drenching rain, ‘cos their bitch was on heat!!

If you want me to rack my brains further, I will. Like when my toddler son threw Violet and Alan’s gnomes in their pond, and then followed them in in the middle of winter, or when he and another lad, whose name I have forgotten, smeared wet tarmac in their hair after I had had a “Cheap” delivery from the quarry. We could buy cheaply some left over loads at the end of the day.

I won’t bore you any more but please e-mail m.robinet@blueyonder.co.uk if you want to chat. I still keep in touch with the Oldfields, and have been onto the History Society Website.

Regards,
Bernard Tapp

Parwich in the press.

We’re not quite sure how this happened – but a nice article appeared in today’s “Fenland Citizen” on the subject of last night’s Strictly Come Dancing shenanigans at the Sycamore, featuring lengthy quotes from Janet. Click here to read the article in full.

Meanwhile, Friday’s Derby Evening Telegraph included a article on the various changes planned for the Bennetts group of department stores, with extensive quotes throughout from incoming managing director – and Parwich resident – Simon Ingham. Click here to read the article in full.

Update: Thanks to Christopher Harrison for pointing us in the direction of this Press Association article on Parwich’s reaction to Tom’s win.

“We are all totally on cloud nine. It’s unbelievable. We are so happy for Camilla.” – Tom’s dad Stuart.

“Everyone was really happy for him when he won. It’s a close-knit community and everyone knows him.” – Janet, landlady of the Sycamore.

“People know him here as Tom and it’s strange to think of him as a celebrity because he’s so normal when he comes back to the village.” – Reverend Christopher Harrison.

Book Launch

Parwich resident, Jo-anne Jewett, launched her new book “The Beautiful Truth: make up made easy” today.  There was a potential mishap last Saturday with the whole stock of the book nearly being left in the rain outside an empty house by the delivery men.  Fortunately the Vicar, out walking the dog, was able to intercede, and offer temporary sanctuary at the Vicarage.

Well done to all of them for making their cases so eloquently.

Freda & Sheila Goodbye

Freda and Sheila are now settled in their delightful flat in Ashbourne after a successful move today. It is a major wrench for Freda having spent almost all her life here, but she is really pleased with her new home & Sheila is so excited, it is a joy to see. They have already had their first visitors and they are really looking forward to seeing other familiar faces. They want to keep close links with the village, already they are booked in for the Over 60’s Christmas Lunch.

It would be really nice if between us all we could organise some transport over to Parwich when we have different events on. For example, the first one being the Christmas Carol Service, when Freda’s annual Christmas Cake will be raffled (maybe someone could collect them & someone else takes them home). If you are willing to help out occasionally please let Jane B (665) or Peter (287) know.

Dorothy Foden – in memory

Dorothy Foden, of Brook Cottage, was well loved by many people in Parwich and beyond.  She was very much at the heart of St. Peter’s church, as well as being a strong supporter of Parwich Methodist chapel.  A new altar frontal in her memory, donated by Brian, was last week put in place in the chapel at St Peter’s.  It was made by Jenifer Baines of Littleover, Derby, using the fabric ‘Venetian Tapestry’.  Jenifer is an old friend of Andrew and Rachel Robinson, as well as being someone I have got to know through the Derbyshire-India links.  The frontal enhances the chapel enormously, and it is very fitting that it should be in a part of the church which is also used by Parwich Methodists for their twice-monthly service.

100_2569

The frontal will be dedicated during the Carol Service on Sunday 14th December at 5.00 pm, along with the first of the kneelers which have been made in memory of Ambrose Wilton.

Goodbye Freda & Sheila

Best WishesHaving spent virtually all their lives in Parwich, Freda & Sheila are moving to Ashbourne at the end of November. They have a delightful two bedroomed flat with super south facing views overlooking the town and up towards Derby Road.

It will be extremely sad to see them both leave Parwich but hopefully they will be regular visitors, especially if there are any volunteers to help them with transport from time to time.

Last year Sheila enjoyed a memorable helicopter ride for her 60th birthday and Freda is renowned for her fabulous Christmas cake which is raffled for the Church. Also their table decorations always enhance the Open Gardens teas.

They both spent their early childhood at Mellow Meadow Farm before moving into the village, firstly at Japonica and then Shaw Lane Cottage; in 1995 Freda moved to Smithy Close, with Sheila living for some years at Bradbourne Mill Farm.

Freda and Sheila, best wishes to you both in your new home!

Vicar featured in Nottingham paper

Yesterday the Nottingham Evening Post ran a fascinating feature on Rev Christopher Harrison, who is moving from the parishes of Aslop, Fenny Bentley, Parwich, Thorpe and Tissington to Central Nottingham.

Christopher HarrisonUnder the title “Thatcher and drugs and rural Derbyshire – Nottingham’s new vicar tells his story” here are some extracts:

For Christopher, 51, is on the cusp of taking up a new challenge as the vicar of three of Nottingham’s most prestigious city centre churches, All Saints, St Mary’s and St Peter’s.

“The three Nottingham churches have a traditional liturgy but they are quite modern in outlook and there’s a lot of engagement with the community,” he said.

He believes his disparate experiences of the tough and the talkative, from council estates to parish council meetings, will stand him in good stead for his Nottingham career.  (more…)

The Final Postcard from China

Today was our last day in China. It’s been something of a marathon 12 hours but a magical and perfect end. It’s going to be difficult not to be too lyrical. We took The Harmonious Train two hours south west to Hangzhou- described by Marco Polo as the world’s most beautiful city. I could agree and I daresay the other thousands of Chinese who also came on their family day felt the same.

We came to China’s most romantic and famous West Lake (there are thirty others) Xi Hu, immortalised by countless poets. The rain was pouring down in torrents but there, between a sea of colourful Chinese umbrellas, was this monochrome vision of pagodas rising through the mist clad mountains above a lake dotted with dragon boats. I thought I had fallen into a film set. A small cruise on the lake passed romantic images of weeping willows and arched bridges. (more…)

Jean Allen, of Croft Avenue, who lived for many years at Woodeaves, just outside Fenny Bentley, has shown me some splendid photos of people from Alsop en le Dale dating back to the 1920s. Her father, Charlie Allen, was stationmaster at Alsop when the trains still ran on that line. These provide a remarkable glimpse of Alsop church and parish, from a time when there was a Sunday School and choir!

See them below, or click here (which includes a full screen option) –

I have also uploaded onto Youtube some photos from our link diocese in India, Patna, which date from the late 1800s. These were shown to me earlier this month by the Bishop of Patna, Philip Marandih, and show scenes from the early years of the Christian missionaries among the Santal tribe in the village of Taljhari. Meet The A52s!

If you took a Tuesday evening stroll along Smithy Lane this Summer, you may have heard the sound of clinking beer bottles, manic strumming, improvised accordions and uncontrollable laughter. This, ladies and gentlemen, was the sound of The A52s creating music. In the first week, the band learned some notes. In the second week, they tried putting them in the right order. As the weeks went by, these top musicians learned enough notes to do a debut gig! Terrifying huh?! We think so too!

The band turned down frantic offers from lesser venues such as the NEC and the O2 Arena, opting instead for the prestigious yet intimate Parwich Legion. The band will appear 8.30 to 9ish on Saturday 8th November. Make a note in your diaries for an evening of fine entertainment. Free admission (in fact, the band may be paying you)!

The A52s is Parwich’s foremost folk-rock band, comprising 4 musicians at the top of their game (which happens to be Snap):

Many congratulations to Esther Tyson, our recent artist addition to the village (see previous post).

She has won not one but two(!) prestigious awards for her art work, which are:

The RSPB Award for “Bullfinch Study” and the Capmark Europe Art Award (first prize) for “Early beginnings – Moorhen nest building”.

Interestingly, the Moorhen picture (see below) was based on Esther’s studies of the Parwich village pond.

Both awards were presented by Germaine Greer at the Society of Wildlife Artists Annual Exhibition 2008 at the Mall Galleries, London on the 23rd September (see photo below).

Vicar to move to Nottingham

It is with much sadness that I have announced that we will be moving from Parwich in February – I have been asked to be priest in charge of three churches in the centre of Nottingham.

St. Mary’s is situated in the Lace Market; St. Peter’s is in the heart of the shopping area, next to Marks and Spencer’s, and All Saints is near to the Arboretum and to Trent University.  Our years in Parwich have been wonderful in so many ways, but working in the heart of a major city will also offer some splendid opportunities.

I expect that we will leave Parwich in early February – my licensing service in Nottingham is on Sunday 22nd February at 3.00 pm.   The process of finding a new vicar for Parwich will involve the drawing up of a profile of the group of five parishes, which will be put to possible applicants.  This will be overseen by the bishop and his colleagues, but the main work on the profile needs to be done here.

At least it’s not too far from here – do come and visit!   Details of the parish are at www.nottinghamchurches.org

After a long time with a pretty severe back problem and lots of money spent trying to cure it, I have found an ace!  Stephen Marshall at Peak Osteopathy (Alport near Youlgreave) Tel 01629 636997.  He has straightened me out and I fell as right as rain at last.

Thank you to Don for giving us this invaluable information.

I would also like to say how much I have been helped  with a hip problem, from being in regular discomfort and needing cortisone injections, now I am currently pain free since being “worked over” by Stephen.

When you ring you need to leave a message and he is excellent about ringing you back promptly – as he works from home he will often be able to slot you in when other osteopaths make you wait for several days.  Another advantage with Stephen is that he is honest with you about how many sessions you might have to attend and whether or not it is a problem that he can help you with.  He is also very local.

Any information on the Calladine family?

We have received two emails from Sandra Yould in Australia, who is researching the Calladines of Parwich and Alsop:

I just googled Parwich and found your site. May I congratulate you all. It’s great – I even had a play with the jigsaw puzzles! (My husband’s CALLADINE ancestors lived in Parwich and many are buried there. We actually visited the lovely village for a day in 1999.)

and secondly

now that you have offered it would be nice if you could say something about a ‘down under’ cousin seeking information on the Calladines of Parwich and Alsop.

Denise’s Sponsored SkyDive!

Congratulations to Denise, and thank you to the Professor for sending this in:

She’s Done It! Denise’s Sponsored SkyDive! She’s a Star!

If you cast your minds back to July, many of you will have filled in Sponsorship Forms for Denise’s Skydive in aid of the Derby City General Hospital Breast Cancer Clinic.

On 19 July we went out to Langar airfield (between Nottingham and Grantham – and the home of the British Parachute Schools Skydiving Centre). The winds blew and blew, and if a jump had been made Denise would probably have landed in the Netherlands. We waited all day, and eventually returned disconsolate (to drown our sorrows in a pub in Markeaton).

Since then a combination of dreadful weather and domestic problems intervened to make a jump impossible, but on Tuesday 16 September we were told that Wednesday weather would be ideal – we should get there as early as possible. So we turned up at 10.30 – only to find mist and a very low cloud-base which would make tandem jumps for starters unsafe. The day went on and on.

Tom Chambers is featured on page 3 of today’s Derby Evening Telegraph.

Stuart said Tom wants to succeed on the show to make people in the county proud.

He said: “He really wants to help put Derbyshire on the map and everyone should get behind him.”

Patti, who lives in Parwich, has known Tom since he was at school and is certain the village will back him all the way.

She said: “When Holby City first started we all watched the show in the pub.  He may be on TV but he’s still our Tom.

“If he goes right to the end, and I think he ought to, I’m sure the village will have a fantastic party.”

Extra copies of the paper are on sale at the Sycamore.
