Update – necktie found

Could all the lovely dog walkers out there keep their eyes peeled for my cat’s (Bob) red spotty collar necker that I made him?

It has gone missing, probably stuck in a hedge somewhere…

Thanks!

Dog-walkers asked to keep pets on leads in countryside

Peak District dog-walkers are asked to keep their pets on short leads to protect young farm animals and wildlife during the breeding season of spring and early summer.

Most responsible dog-owners would be horrified if their pets injured newborn lambs or chicks but farmers have already reported such incidents in the Peak District National Park over the past few weeks. Declining birds such as lapwing, curlew and snipe which nest on the ground are particularly vulnerable to harm from dogs roaming free or on long leads.

Tara Challoner, Peak District Wader Recovery Project officer said:

You may not always be aware that birds are present which can easily lead you into thinking that the moors and fields are great empty places, perfect for letting your dog have a good run around. However many of these birds are in very serious trouble and we need to do all we can to ensure that they are not lost from our countryside forever.

Thank you to one of our readers for letting us know about this:

Just wanted to inform you of a suspicious incident last night at about 11.00pm.

When letting our dogs out last night, we had 2 men on the footpath by Smithy Close trying to get our dogs by whistling and calling them. When shining our torches onto the footpath they disappeared. Just wanted other people in the village with dogs be on their guard. This is the second time this has happened in as many months. I will be reporting it to the police today.

Missing Bantam

We have received the following request for help:

One of my bantams has gone missing between 9.00 am and  9.30am this morning. I fear the worst, that it has been a snack to another creature. But in case anyone finds her please let me know, thanks Glynis, tel 561.

Update – Tuesday November 26th: Glynis writes:

Great news, when I went up this morning the missing bantam had returned, no explanation as to where she had been for the last three days, but in good health. Happy days!

Missing Hen

UPDATE – Alice is alive but elusive. She must be nesting. I spotted her having some food this morning but it was about two minutes before a conference call for work and by the time I’d finished she had gone again….. If she can survive another night without been found by Mr Fox I am hopeful of getting her back!

One of our hens (Alice) did not return to roost yesterday – she has never done this before. When not here at Pond Cottage she normally only strays as far as the field between ourselves and Veronica, or on the grass verge outside the main gate to that field.

Alice is friendly and is quite easy to spot as she is a Light Sussex hen (mostly white with a black/grey tail as per photo below); however, we have had a good look around and can see no sign of her or of any feathers…… There is a small posibility that she has made a nest somewhere, in which case she should reappear for a few minutes everyday for food and water.

If anyone sees her, or has any idea what might have happened to her, please could you let us know – even if it’s not good news….?

Many thanks

Plea for Bonios!

We have a guest staying in Tom’s Barn with her lovely but rather elderly dog, Lottie, who is diabetic and very partial to Bonios which form an integral part of her special diet. Unfortunately, her supply has come to an end and this is proving rather a crisis as Janet doesn’t have them in the shop and we can’t get our cars out onto the road, even if the road to Ashbourne was clear…

Trevor W has most kindly offered to buy some if he succeeds in getting to Ashbourne later today but meanwhile – and just in case he can’t get through –  does anyone have a spare box of Bonios we could borrow and replace when the weather and roads improve, please?
Please ring us on 519 if you think you could help out. Lottie would be eternally grateful, as would Jill her owner and of course, so would we too!

In hopes!

Very sadly,  our final little gerbil died last year.  We aren’t planning on  any more small pets, and wondered if anyone would like the cage they lived  in.  It is a very large plastic tank with a double tiered caged area which  clips on top.  It is in perfect condition, and free to anyone who is either  thinking about getting a gerbil or hamster or already has one but would like to  upgrade the accommodation.  We also have a smaller cage which we used when  we cleaned out the big one, if anyone would like that.

Best  wishes,

Bag it, bin it!

Thank you to a Creamery Lane resident for sending this in.  The perennial problem of people not clearing up after their dogs:

Not again …. ?!?

Oh dear, Holland lost again and is out of Euro 2012, so I’m upset, but only mildly.

What has upset me much, much more is finding yet again a pile of dog faeces (or ‘poo’ to most people) on Creamery Lane/at the bottom of the drive.

Who is allowing their dog to wander and do their business anywhere without tidying up afterwards?

This is the second time in only 3 days and I pray it doesn’t become a regular event.

If it does, I will have no option but to sniff out the culprit and publish a mug shot …

2 ½ weeks ago Bob went missing and an appeal was made on the blog by Debbie.

Today Wyatt M was on a bike ride with his dad and they found Bob in a barn meowing like crazy. It is thanks to the Blog that so many people were looking for him. It is just fantastic to have Bob back home again.  Thank you all, Debbie.

Lost Cat

Our cat Bob, who is a real creature of habit, has not been seen for over 36 hours.  This is very, very unusual for him.

He is black and white, wears a red collar with a pirate tag (unless he’s slipped his collar) but his most distinguishing features are his extra toes on each foot (he has “thumbs”) and exceptionally long whiskers.

Please, please keep your eyes peeled and let me know if you spot him. I’m hoping he is just out and about enjoying the good weather, but we are quite worried.

Our cat has been found

Thank you all of you who helped look for Lucky and spread the word about the fact that she was missing.  Jack and I went on a two hour drive yesterday putting up posters and delivering leaflets in the surrounding area resulting in a call from Sitterlow Farm to say that she had been seen there.  So we collected her last night and she is back home safe and sound.

Caroline H writes:

Would anyone be able to look after our cocker spaniel Lily for us for next week?

Ideally, this would be from the morning of Monday August 8th to early evening on Sunday August 14th.

However, we do have a bit of flexibility and could adapt to Thursday to early Sunday evening, or from Friday morning to early Sunday evening.

Commercial rates paid!

As all local kennels are fully booked, it would help us a lot if anyone could have her.

Please phone me on 07767 426107.

Many thanks
Caroline
