For the third year running, Sotheby’s of London are staging Beyond Limits: a selling exhibition of modern and contemporary sculpture in the gardens of Chatsworth House.

This year’s display includes sculptures by Salvador Dali, Marc Quinn, Zadok Ben-David, Lynn Chadwick, Robert Indiana, Zaha Hadid, Richard Hudson and many more.

Our favourites this year were Marc Quinn’s giant bronze baby (“Planet”), which sits at the near end of the lake, and Robert Indiana’s “The American Love”, which sits at the far end. We were also very much taken by Jedd Novatt’s more abstract – and endlessly fascinating – “Chaos Vascos II”.

The exhibition runs until November 2nd and comes highly recommended – particularly on a clear, bright afternoon, when the sunlight displays the works to their best advantage.

(Hover your cursor over each image to reveal its title, and click on each image to enlarge it.)

Which sculpture is your favourite? Please let us know in the comments.

One that got away

Thank you to our reader who sent in this photo of a hanging basket that was not entered in the competition.  Hopefully they will enter next year.

Also although the baskets at the Sycamore Inn could not be included in the competition as they had been planted up by the judge, they are well worth seeing, so here is some photos of them as well:

Here’s a video montage of images taken at this year’s Y-Not Festival. Click the picture to activate the movie….

Despite some heavy rain earlier in the day, the Pikehall Y-Not festival got off to a dry and bright start yesterday. Although technical problems delayed the opening of the main stage, the large acoustic tent proved to be an ideal venue to house the Friday afternoon/evening line-up. The bands alternated on stage with the scheduled acoustic artists, with an impressively quick turnaround time between each act.

Our small but enthusiastic Parwich posse witnessed a great set of performances from The Moutown Project, Anthea Neads, Esteban, comedian Ruth Cockburn, The Rusticles, Toufique Ali and our clear favourites: the splendid Whiskycats from Manchester.

As the evening sunshine poured into the tent and the crowd thrashed around wildly to an unknown, unsigned band who were clearly loving every minute, the underlying purpose of the festival – to promote undiscovered talent in a relaxed environment, surrounded by beautiful countryside – became gloriously apparent.

Our mystery photographer took these shots yesterday afternoon, while walking from Parwich to… where, exactly?

If you can name the mystery destination, then our mystery photographer will make a donation to Project Parwich.

But be warned: for every day that the mystery remains unsolved, the size of the donation will decrease by £1.

The twenty shots below are arranged in the same sequence as the walk. Because of lighting conditions, some of them are taken looking backwards rather than forwards. Click on each image to enlarge it, and click on “Continue Reading” (at the foot of this post) to see all twenty images.

When the mystery has been solved, we will publish a photo of the mystery walkers at their final destination.

Please feel free to discuss the clues in the comments box!

Parwich Church Institute

From Parwich & District Local History Society:

We are working on the next issue of the Local History Society newsletter and wondered if anyone had any more/better photographs of the old Parwich Church Institute, which can be seen here on the right hand side of the photograph below, behind the cart shed and the carbide shed.

Also does anyone have information on where this corrugated metal prefabricated building came from?  Local tradition has it that it was a redundant World War I military building, though it would have been moved here about the same time that the buildings from Tin Town were being sold off.  Tin Town was a temporary village (complete with shops, church and school) created for the workforce that constructed the Howden and Derwent Reservoirs.

If you can help please email parwich@hotmail.co.uk or contact Peter T (tel 287).

Flower Power

Here is Marion F-S’s comment on the Parwich Flower Festival together with some of John’s photos to give you a taste.  Do take the opportunity to go tomorrow afternoon 1pm to 5pm (Sunday 6th June):

I have just come back from the flower festival in the church, completely bowled over by the beautiful displays, the wonderful scent of roses, soothing background music and – of course – the welcoming coffee and delicious home made cakes.

The first surprise is the porch, complete with garden gate and hastily abandoned galoshes – obviously some keen gardener (someone looking for an allotment, perhaps?) has taken it over. They’ve been suddenly called away, but doubtless will soon be back…

Morning mist from Gibbons Bank

What better way to mark the 500th post on PARWICH.ORG, than with these images of Parwich in the morning mist?

The pictures were taken at around 5:00 this morning by “early bird” Mike G, from his vantage point on Gibbons Bank.

As the sequence progresses, you can see the first rays of morning sunlight creeping across the valley.

By the final image, the mist has started to fade, and you can see the tree tops beginning to poke through. (Best seen if you click to enlarge.)

Thanks to Mike for getting up so early, and capturing a scene that many of us would never normally get to see.

Photographing seventeen gardens within the space of two and a half hours was always going to be a tall order. For Kevin S., who was forced to decline numerous offers of liquid refreshment along the way in the name of duty, completing the circuit represented an almost superhuman feat of endurance.

Kevin also found time to snap most (or was it all?) of the entries in this year’s scarecrow competition. Sincere apologies to anyone whose scarecrow remained undiscovered.

Despite the cloudy skies and the heavy winds, the gardens of Parwich looked truly magnificent this afternoon. Many thanks to all who took part, to all who visted, and of course to the Horticultural Society for arranging yet another successful and enjoyable event.

In the gallery which follows, our seventeen show gardens are displayed in numerical order, according to the official map: The School, School View, Stable Cottage, Wheatsheaf Cottage, Pool Croft, Town Head, Parwich Hall, Gardener’s Cottage, Knob Hall, Creamery Cottage, Orchard Farm, 6 Church Walk, Church Cottage, Flaxdale, The Fold, Walnut Cottage and Brook Close Farm.

At least one image from each garden has been chosen; usually there are two, and occasionally there are three. Again, our apologies to those gardens who received somewhat short shrift; time was very limited, and lighting conditions were far from ideal.

Our 2008 gallery starts “below the fold”. As always, clicky-clicky to make it biggy-biggy!

Please get in touch if you have any sets of photos you think would make a good slide show, or if you are willing to take photos at Open Gardens or during Wakes Week to create specific shows on them.

If people are willing to take photographs of the Children’s Show, scarecrows and gardens on Sunday 22nd, PARWICH.ORG can make a slide show that will be accessed on-line. Send your photos to parwich@hotmail.co.uk or give them to Peter T (tel 287) on CD.

No names, house names or addresses will be included, just photos.  Also we will check with the garden owners whether they are happy or not to have their gardens included.

Hopefully we can also do the same for Wakes Week.

The driving ranges of Solihull or the roundabouts of Slough?

Having so far failed dismally to create a challenging observation task, here is one last go.  All the photos below have been taken in the lanes of Parwich in the last three days.  In which gardens or in front of which houses are these wonderful flowers (or vegetables) growing.  Putting my money where my keyboard is, I will donate £25 to Project Parwich if anyone manages to get all 25 correct.  Further if anyone submits a post with all correct by 6pm on Sunday 15th June 2008, I will double this, and give a box of chocolates to the winner.  (If a number of people get them all correct by 6pm on Sunday, the winner will be drawn out of a hat or nearest equivalent.)
