Where is this?

Here is an attempt at a harder photograph to identify.  This wooden building can be seen from the road, but not from this angle.  Where is it?

Update: the location has been guessed correctly. Check the comments for the answer…

Morning meadows.

It takes a lot to get Kevin S. up and about at 7 o’clock on a Sunday morning, but today’s beautiful weather had him rolling around in the dew well before breakfast time.  As ever, click to enlarge…

Jigsaw Page Updated

The JIGSAW PUZZLES page has been updated after a several week gap (my apologies).  With the latest jigsaw, entitled ‘Bear Stake Croft’, we have an extra twist.  There is a page of background information about the orchard and its strange old name.  You can get to this page by clicking on the link across the top of page with the puzzle on, but you will have to complete the puzzle before the link will work.

Leave a comment below if you think this is a good idea, and you would like us to repeat it with future puzzles.

We have just expanded our “Photographs” page to include almost all the original images that have appeared on PARWICH.ORG to date.

Click here to take a look, and then click on each image to enlarge it.

New images will be added to the top of the page on a fairly regular basis, so it’s worth checking back from time to time. There’s a permanent link to the Photographs page in the ELSEWHERE ON PARWICH.ORG section, over on the right hand column. You can also get to it via USEFUL INFO and the Site Map.

We’re always delighted to receive your photos, so do please keep sending them in.

Oh, and don’t forget the online jigsaws! They’re great stress relievers!

Golden Fields!

The weather this year is obviously perfect for dandelions and we are surrounded by fields full of them.  They do look lovely but gardeners beware.

Not content with setting up The Horns and looking after her family, Jo-anne Jewett has been busy writing a book to help “empower” normal women by dispelling the myths about make-up and teaching them how to achieve a professional look themselves. The book, which is due to be launched at Bennetts in Ashbourne in July, is called:

‘The Beautiful Truth’
Make-up-is-easy
Don’t believe the hype!!

More about the book later, because not only is Jo-anne launching her book but, inspired by the “before and after” photo sessions that were done for the book, she is also taking a more hands-on role and fulfilling her original passion as a make-up artist and training coach. The models for the book are not actually models, they are ordinary women, aged from 13 to 68 and mostly from Parwich! Do you recognise the person in the before and after photos below….?!

Cherry Blossom

The pink blossom on the right is one of the few remaining WI cherry trees.  One was given to each member in the local branch to mark the Queen’s coronation.  This extra one was planted here by Mrs Dodds.

The Square in bloom

We would like to thank Dorothy for all the hard work she has put into creating a woodland garden on the Parish Council land in front of Parwich Hall.

The Parish Council were bold enough to go for this land in the centre of the village when it came up for auction a couple of years ago, and Dorothy certainly rose to the challenge of maintaining it. (more…)

The First Responders asked us to post the following:

A THANK YOU FROM PARWICH FIRST RESPONDERS … AND WHY NOT JOIN US???

We have been rather busy over the last few weeks and we would like to thank all those villagers who have helped when someone has become unwell – you know who you are – and the community spirit in this village is fantastic – thank you.

For those of you who don’t know about Parwich First Responders we are a group of 15 or so villagers who have been trained by East Midlands Ambulance Service. They ‘employ’ us and insure us – after a 999 call has been received from our immediate area, if they feel it is appropriate, they call us and we respond. (more…)

Alsop in the winter fog.

Our thanks to Rob Francis, for agreeing to share these striking images with us. They were taken on the Sunday before Christmas, just below Alsop car park on the Tissington trail.

As Rob says: “The conditions were strange to say the least. One of them has the image on the photographer ( ie me) projected unto the fog – eerie!”

Update: In the comments, Peter T explains that this phenomenon – both the shadow and the rainbow circle that surrounds it – is known as “the brockenspectre and the glory“.

Here are some photographs from the grand opening of the new village shop, inside the Sycamore. Our local TV celebrity Tom Chambers was on hand to congratulate Janet, as were a whole crowd of well-wishers.

Inside the shop, you’ll find all the essentials, including fresh fruit and vegetables, free range Parwich eggs, tea, coffee, cereals, fresh bread, dairy products, canned and frozen food, household goods, sweets and crisps, and (as you would expect from a pub!) beer, wine and spirits. And if you’re quick off the mark, there are even some Easter eggs for sale.

As an added bonus, lunchtime and evening shoppers can stop and enjoy a pint or a glass of wine with their purchases – and what could be more civilised than that!

Thanks to John Fuller Sessions and Kevin Slater for the photos. To view the full set, please click here.
