The PDHS Needs YOU!

Apologies, as we don’t normally publish personal opinion pieces on the blog, but here goes….

Tomorrow it’s time once again for the PDHS show. Usually the  second major PDHS event, first Open Gardens then the Show, with summer sandwiched nicely between them. A chance to show off how kind the summer has been to our gardens, or how skillful we’ve been in mastering whatever the gods have thrown at us, after the early promise of open gardens. Sadly, as we all know, this year is a bit different. The cancellation of Open Gardens was a big blow to the PDHS and the village. You may have seen the note on the Show entry form “Prize money has been reduced to the loss of revenue from Open Gardens this year”. Open Gardens usually brings substantial revenue to the PDHS so this year they will be feeling the loss. But this doesn’t just affect the PDHS and their ability to run trips and events it affects the whole village. Over the years the PDHS have been extremely generous in sharing their funds with other organisations and groups in the village including this blog, so we will all be feeling the pinch. Speaking for the blog, we have annual costs for provision of web hosting, storage, etc which we would struggle to pay without the generous donations we receive from the PDHS.I’m sure other groups will be hit similarly.

So now it is our turn. Time to say thank you to the PDHS and give them our support, like they have supported us through the years, and make this the best show ever! Everyone with a garden, you have something growing you can enter in the show. Don’t worry if it wouldn’t win at Chelsea or Chatsworth, it’s just for fun and to support the PDHS, and you never know….

Then there’s the cookery section, we all fancy ourselves as the next Bake Off champion. Now’s your chance to shine and show off a little.

And for the kids, who can’t pick a jam jar full of flowers or take a picture of a tree?

So come on everyone it’s time to support the PDHS and thank them for what they’ve quietly done for the village over the years.

Parish Council Meeting

The next meeting of Parwich Parish Council will be held on Wednesday the 16th September 2020 at 7:30 pm.

Due to the Covid-19 outbreak Parish Councils continue to be advised not to meet face to face unless this is the only way that they can conduct their business.

The meeting will therefore once again be conducted using Zoom. The agenda contains login details that can be used by members of the public to join the meeting.

There is also a telephone number which will enable you to listen to the meeting and speak when permitted.

If you have not used Zoom before you are strongly advised to download their app in advance. This will enable you set it up on your device and familiarise yourself with its operation.

The agenda is here.

Parwich Bonfire and Fireworks

It is with great sadness that Parwich Carnival and Recreation Committee have had to cancel this years bonfire night. Due to the current restrictions it is just not possible to do. Please can people refrain from adding any more items to the bonfire site.

Garden Waste Charges on the Way

Early bird discount for new garden waste scheme

Early bird discounts are available now for Derbyshire Dales residents subscribing to a new garden waste collection scheme. It costs a discounted £35 for Dales households that subscribe for the 2021/22 year to the garden waste service now – the equivalent of less than 68p a week.

The new scheme, starting on 1 April next year, generates funds to offset the increased cost of the District Council’s new waste and recycling contract, which began last month.

Derbyshire Dales joins more than half of all UK councils now charging residents for garden waste collections. The councils that make a charge include 39 of the 50 authorities most similar to Derbyshire Dales District Council.

In the coming weeks all local households will receive a leaflet delivered by contractor Serco, inviting them to take advantage of the discounted price online at http://www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/gardenwaste There’s also a hotline number for residents without internet access.

The discount offer closes at the end of January 2021, when the subscription price rises to £50. Continue Reading »

Church

Parwich church resource 24/7 and church open Sunday

Instead of our usual gathering tomorrow via Zoom, there is a video on YouTube.  In just under 11 minutes there is a reading from Matthew’s Gospel and I (sorry about that!) reflect on that using the title ‘Sin in the Church’.  You can access the video anytime – no need to wait until 6pm tomorrow – via  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lcco9m1D7yY&feature=youtu.be

A reminder (since I’ve written less than usual this week) that the church is open for all (with physical distancing measures) every Sunday 9 – 5.

Hello! Is anyone in the village an astronomer and can recommend telescopes, especially ones that can hook up to Samsung phones to take photos.
Looking forward to suggestions!

We have received the following request:

Does anybody know how to find out if there are any records that would show past cricket matches played in Parwich? It’s for a friend of mine, Wayne Ward, his Great-Grandad’s name was Arthur Smith, he had some cricket playing brothers (Les and Lawrence) and his Dad (Charlie Smith) and one or possibly both of his uncles (George Smith and William/Bill Smith) were cricketers too. He is trying to find out if any written records might exist. He has a 1910s or 20s photo which shows his Great Grandad’s Dad and Grandad (team manager), but other than knowing that Arthur Smith and his brothers were cricketing well into the 1940s and probably beyond, he doesn’t know much else! Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you lucy B
