With the memory of turkey, mince pies and central heating still in their systems, all sections of the 1st Derbyshire Dales Cyberscouts met at Gradbach Scout Camp on January 3rd, to celebrate the start of another year of traditional scouting activities.
Following the opening ceremony around the flag pole, the group enjoyed its first Moving On Ceremonies, which see members developing and moving from one section to another.
There was also the opportunity to recognise the achievements of individual members by awarding skill badges – notably in the areas of creativity and experimentation – whilst the Camp Wardens stoked up the log fires in the stone farmhouse, where some of the day’s activities were to take place… Continue Reading »

Just a reminder that Nia, Lynne, Alison and Tricia will be at the Memorial Hall tomorrow morning (Tuesday) straight after school drop off (8.30/8.45) for a meeting to talk about our children at school. We hope as many people as possible will come along and that those who are unable to will let us have their thoughts on any issues relating to school.

The parwich.org Roving Photographer wanted to take some pictures of the last of the snow which emphasised the ridges and furrows on our hillsides. As he drove out past Bradbourne early on Saturday morning, the sunrise started to become interesting, so he continued on to Carsington. The sun rose a little further and the sky took on the most beautiful colours. The glow from the water and the snow was captivating.
Later, some snowy “ridge and furrow” pictures were taken to record this unusual variation on our landscape. A few are shown here.

For those of you who missed it, there was a really good article on Jo-anne and her book (The Beautiful Truth) in last Saturday’s Derbyshire Evening Telegraph. Jill Gallone, who wrote the article, said:
It’s been put together beautifully and simply. As well as showing you, step-by-step, how to apply make-up correctly, it tells you the basics you need to buy and explains the colours to suit your hair, eye and skin tones.
I followed the advice, was astonished to learn about some of the daft mistakes I’d been making for 20-odd years, then looked into the mirror to discover a new me.To read the full article, click here.

The relaunch of the Cyberscout Group in our area is proving very popular. The 1st Derbyshire Dales District is by far the largest District in Derbyshire and it is the least densely populated, Glossop to Baslow to Brailsford and Leek.
The idea behind it is to promote and provide Scouting to the young people in small villages throughout our area, making it a more convenient way to access to Scouting. All sections of the Cyberscout Group, Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts and Explorer Scouts will meet nine times a year and the Scouting programme can be downloaded from the Cyberscouts website. The meetings will be for full days and or weekends which will include assessing the progress of the young people on the last set of downloaded programme exercises, and preparation and introduction for the next set of downloads. Although Parwich is lucky enough to boast two fine drinking establishments of its own, we are also fortunate to have a large number of country pubs within a short driving distance.
Using Google Maps as a guide, and excluding town pubs in Ashbourne, Bakewell and Wirksworth, we have found a grand total of fifty country pubs within a rough 10-mile radius.
Since we have so many places to choose from, we thought it would be interesting to discover where Parwich folk like to visit, when they fancy a change of scene. Hence this poll – which will run in four heats followed by a grand final.
Naturally, we have excluded our own drinking establishments, as they would obviously have walked the contest! Instead, this is an exercise in discovering what lies further afield.
We have divided our 50 country pubs into four zones: North East, South East, South West and North West. (But in order to balance the numbers, we have moved some of the pubs between the categories – so the geographic locations are only approximate.)
For the first heat, here are the 12 pubs from the North East zone.
Please tick as many pubs as you like, before pressing the VOTE button.
The three pubs with the highest number of votes will proceed to our grand final.
If you have visited any of these pubs recently, then please tell us about them in the comments. You might be able to help others make up their minds, or help them discover some good new venues.
Our second heat will be along in a few days’ time.

Someone in the village heard about this competition on the radio & wondered if we could post an article on the blog, to see if anyone is interested in:
- 1. The village taking part in this competition.
- 2. Co-ordinating the entry.
Some of the information needed for the entry has already been gathered through the Big Lottery Bid and through the Community Pub of the Year, but there would still be work to do, (email us at parwich@hotmail.co.uk )
Prize money could go toward the Memorial Hall project – to help equip the interior.
The Calor Village of the Year® competition is a search for the most vibrant, enterprising and sustainable communities. It helps communities to evaluate themselves, by working out exactly what goes on in their area, thinking of how to safeguard the long-term viability of local life benefits the village hugely. Generally judges are looking for lively communities with activities for all ages in their area. Forward-thinking villages with clear ideas about how they can move with the times are likely to succeed – and not just in the Calor Village of the Year® competition. Elton was the winner from Derbyshire last year.
Please complete the poll and add your views.

A slightly strange request, but does anyone have a travel iron that I can borrow for 2 weeks from Saturday. After nearly 3 years in the village we still have a loft full of stuff, but I can’t find my iron. My resolution is to have a major sort out, sometime soon, but please don’t tell Ben because he has been nagging me to do it for ages. j-b-bennett@hotmail.com or ring Jane (665)

Parwich doesn’t seem to feature very much in this week’s Ashbourne News Telegraph, but it is quality not quantity that counts.
- p1 – Shrovetide footage discovered in archive – Historic video of the game dating back to the 1920’s has been found including a clip of the late Don Lowndes preparing for his moment of glory in 1974. Don was born in Parwich.
- p17. – Clergyman bids a fond farewell – Ashbourne area’s longest serving clergyman, Rev Christopher Harrison, said goodbye on Sunday to the parishes he has served for over 12 years… He has been a member too of the Parwich village website blog team.
- p24 – Snow Snow, Thick Thick, Snow – Whilst many schools kept their gates shut Parwich opened on Thursday, one of the few schools brave enough to keep lessons going despite the thick snow.
- p46 – Weather no barrier for darts league – Parwich Legion hosted the Cock Inn and won 7-2.

Dear Parwich.org – please could you pop this note onto your great website!
I thought I would let you know that the National Park Ranger Service recently visited Parwich to clear new tree growth from footpath 1, the trackway that runs south of the village towards Sitterlow Farm.
Probably about 10 years ago now, my colleague, Neil Hanshaw, was involved in improving this path, by installing drainage and surfacing. Some of you probably remember wading down this lane in wellies, because it was more river than path at this time. Then about 4 years ago the Ranger Service returned to this path because it had become obstructed by overhanging trees and vegetation. Over the course of one winter we gradually removed the obstructing trees to let in light and room for people to pass unmolested by blackthorn and hawthorn. We probably spent about 60 person days working on this clearance job – it was a considerable task – but the odd baked potato in a fire helped to keep our spirits up. But it was with considerable depression that I received a report last summer that young hawthorn and blackthorn growth was gradually closing in on the path again.
So last week when snow threatened to cancel our pre-arranged work with our valiant band of conservation volunteers, we diverted ourselves to Parwich and snipped back all the new hawthorn and blackthorn growth before it became a mammoth task again. Continue Reading »

Following the snow last week the green bins were not collected. We have checked with The Council and they have confirmed that the green bins will not now be collected until their usual date on Thursday 19th February. Glass and newspaper will be collected this week on Friday 13th February.
All green bins back in we’re afraid!

It was always going to be difficult to say goodbye to everyone at the service at St. Peter’s church yesterday, and there seemed to be far too little time to speak with individuals. There were lots of memories of the last twelve years, a period during which Parwich has changed considerably, not least because well over 30 residents have died during this time. I would like to repeat my thanks to the many people who contributed generously to our farewell gifts – a speaker system, some Le Creuset cookware, photos of several of the churches, and this splendid painting of Thorpe church by John Wilford:

We were also presented with a wonderful album of photos from the church over recent years, taken largely by John Fuller Sessions, who also took these yesterday:

There are so many people to thank for all that we have done together in the churches over the years, that it is impossible to name them all. But I want especially to thank Isobel for all her support and her understanding of the long hours I have often had to work, and all those who have showed us hospitality and made us welcome over the past twelve years. Do come to visit in Nottingham!

Our film selection this Friday has just won the award for BEST BRITISH FILM at the Bafta awards, so don’t miss it!
On August 7th 1974, a young Frenchman named Philippe Petit stepped out on a wire illegally rigged between New York’s twin towers, then the world’s tallest buildings. After nearly an hour dancing on the wire, he was arrested, taken for psychological evaluation, and brought to jail before he was finally released. Following six and a half years of dreaming of the towers, Petit spent eight months in New York City planning the execution of the coup. Aided by a team of friends and accomplices, Petit was faced with numerous extraordinary challenges: he had to find a way to bypass the WTC’s security; smuggle the heavy steel cable and rigging equipment into the towers; pass the wire between the two rooftops; anchor the wire and tension it to withstand the winds and the swaying of the buildings. The rigging was done by night in complete secrecy. At 7:15 AM, Philippe took his first step on the high wire 1,350 feet above the sidewalks of Manhattan…
Part documentary part re-enactment, this gripping film received 100% review consensus on the film web-site, Rotten Tomatoes, and winner of Best Documentary, and was nominated for an Oscar.
Friday 13th February – 7.45pm. Free Entrance

We were treated to the most beautiful of days today. As the sun reflected off the snow, everything seemed to sparkle and be that bit brighter. These photographs were taken on a stroll around the village.

Please could you email, drop round or telephone me (665) about any dates that need to be added to the Calendar. I will be updating the Calendars around the village next Friday. Online now are all the dates we have for the whole year, so if you are organising something it is not too early for it to be included.
All updates need to be sent to me by Thursday 12th February in order that they are included in March’s Parish Magazine calendar page, calendars around the village & on Parwich.org. After that, it will be too late for this month as I will be away.

They play folk music and will be there tonight from ~9.15.
Anyone is welcome to bring their instruments along and join in. Everyone else is welcome too!

Christopher Harrison’s final Service is almost upon us and he and his family will be gone by mid February…. He has led a very busy life over the past 12 or so years, for life in rural parishes is no sinecure these days. Five parishes with five PCC meetings and all their differing issues were soon increased by the post of Rural Dean. This has meant overseeing the needs and problems of a wider area from Brailsford to Hulland to Clifton etc, and not forgetting the Ashbourne churches which were without a Vicar for some time. Indeed he was eventually asked, “to have a responsibility” for these churches and their particular problems before the arrival of the Rev. Geraldine Pond. Continue Reading »

Parwich.org would like to thank all those from Parwich First Responders who have maintained good coverage of the village and the surrounding area despite the difficult conditions. Ambulances can take a considerable time to reach us in weather conditions like this so it is reassuring to know the First Responders are available locally (via 999) should a situation arise.
We thought this picture of the Vale First Responders 1×1 Response Vehicle showed particular inventiveness!

Radio Ashbourne and the QEGS Website broadcast the news:
Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School will be closed for the whole day…….
The news spread like wildfire throughout the village. Each pupil immediately started thinking how they could do some extra homework and get ahead with their revision. Each pupil immediately thought Yippee! Time to go to to The Sledging Hill!!
A day of enormous fun followed. An igloo was successfully constructed complete with a compressed arch roof. Who needs Physics lessons when you can learn whilst having so much fun!
