We shall find out tomorrow if we are one step nearer realising a new Memorial Hall for Alsop, Ballidon, Parwich and Pikehall. Might this become a reality:
This Saturday’s Strictly Come Dancing final will be in two parts:
- At the start of the show, before any dancing takes place, all three couples will have their scores carried over from last week. This includes not only last week’s judges’ scores (in which Tom and Camilla placed last), but also the results of last week’s public phone votes (which will be revealed on the night).
- After the first set of dances, the judges’ new votes, plus the new set of public phone votes, will be added to last week’s scores. The lowest scoring couple will be eliminated.
- At the start of Part Two, later in the evening, the remaining two couples will dance again, with the winner decided solely by a new public phone vote.
This means that Tom and Camilla will start the first part of the show with a potentially major disadvantage – so the phone votes are all-important. No matter how well or how badly Tom and Camilla do on the judges’ scores on Saturday, they will still need the public’s support.
For the Strictly geeks amongst you, the planned voting system announced yesterday does not exclude the possibility of last week’s fiasco happening again… Continue Reading »

Last Friday Adele Metcalfe and Dan Yates (the Peak District National Park Authority’s Community Planning Officers) organised an inspirational Peak District National Park Villages Conference. The day was intended to share ideas and experiences between villages. Parwich Village Action Group sent along a member of our Environment Sub-Group who was struck by how much Parwich has achieved and the opportunities that are open to us.
This day also served to highlight how much the Village Action Group and Parwich have benefited from the support of the Community Planning Officers, who are currently funded by European money due to end in March. At present further funding has not been identified, but the following report of the Conference illustrates how the Authority can not let this essential part of their work be lost – Peter Trewhitt (Village Action Group Chair):

Keynote speaker, Matthew Parris, Times correspondent and political journalist, fired off the opening salvo at a recent Peak District National Park Villages Conference by disagreeing with the quotation. In his own inimitable style he challenged us to consider the importance of local, regional and national government in facilitating the changes that communities at the grass root level need and require. It is neither a top down nor a bottom up process. It is by interweaving the will of people and communities to control their environment and lives with the appropriate mechanism that effects positive change. Continue Reading »

We had a good turnout at the Parwich First Responders’ Social Evening in the Memorial Hall on Sunday evening. Many thanks to all who brought food and refreshments for the event. A particular thanks also to the Responders themselves who give their time to train and be on call in case an emergency occurs. Parwich and the surrounding region is a safer place because of you!

As for our EXCITING MYSTERY WINDOW, we’re edging towards our £40 target… but we’re not quite there yet. So please give generously, if you want to see our Parwich Calendar Boy MAN in a provocative – but decidedly prickly – pin-up pose.
To make it easier for people to donate, we have installed a collecting tin on the bar of The Sycamore. Thanks to Janet for granting permission, and special thanks to The Dovedale Gallery (Dig Street, Ashbourne) for donating the tin free of charge.

This year, as well as having some 14 talks, visits and events, we participated in St Peter’s successful Tympanum Project. Click here to see the on-line information book we prepared with the Church.
Also after our two recent events, Denis’ (as always) very well attended talk on Post Cards and the excellent Christmas Quiz, don’t forget that coming up is “An informal information sharing evening on local history, with a focus on wartime” 8pm Monday 12th January at Parwich Legion.
If you can’t come along on the 12th but have any memories, information or photos you want to share please contact a Committee Member or email parwichhistory@hotmail.com.

On Strictly Come Dancing this week Tom and Camilla danced an energetic Jive and a beautiful Argentine Tango, but failed to find favour with the judges. When the phone lines opened they were left standing at the bottom of the judges’ score board.
Tom & Camilla’s Jive

However, with a change to the advertised structure all three couples in the semi-finals are to go through to next Saturday’s final without a dance off. At the start of this evening’s results show it was announced that the lines were being frozen, and at the end we were told that all the couples were through and this evening’s votes are being carried forward to next week. This week Tom and Camilla are dancing the Argentine Tango and the Jive in Strictly Come Dancing‘s semi-finals. They have already danced the Jive: it was their second dance in the competition (week 3), when they came second on the judges’ scores. For everyone this is their first time with the Argentine Tango, that originated in Buenos Aires in the late 1800s. Initially it was considered too raunchy for the ballrooms of Europe, and was altered into the Tango.
Tonight the show starts at 6-10pm on BBC1, with the phone lines opening at approximately 7-10pm.
The lines will be open until 9pm, closing during the Results Show, which starts at 8-55pm on BBC1 this evening. Note this week the Results Show is tonight, Saturday, and not on Sunday.
All are welcome to watch both Shows tonight on the big telly at the Sycamore.
Here is the week’s media round up: Continue Reading »

Just a quick note for those who missed the post mentioning that the Big Lottery Fund decision on the Memorial Hall redevelopment grant is to be announced on Wednesday 17th December.
The Grant’s Committee met on the 25th November, and initially the BLF said the official announcement would be on the 12th December, however a day or so later they contacted us to say it was delayed to Wednesday 17th (i.e. next Wednesday).
Plans for how we will respond to the announcement next week have been discussed at the Memorial Hall Management Committee meetings since then, but unfortunately we have to wait.
Thank you to Keith for contacting us about this (his email can be seen as a comment below). In 2004 the community vote gave a clear go ahead for re-building the Memorial Hall, and the Committee and supporting project teams have put considerable effort into realising our community’s aspirations. All stages of the process have been formally supported by the Parish Council and all the user group representatives on the Memorial Hall Management Committee.
From all of us here at PARWICH.ORG, a heart felt thanks for all the hard work that has got us this far, and our best wishes for the announcement next week.

Yes, it’s time to reveal our third EXCITING MYSTERY WINDOW – and once again, this is “one for the ladies”. So, if you’d like to see a well-known Parwich resident AS YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN HIM BEFORE, please donate online or via Mike Atkinson, Jane Bennett, Mike Hughes or Peter Trewhitt.
As we received a couple of donations after reaching our last target – including a generous contribution from the “Colours Of Your Heart” jewellery company at Hoganaston – we are rolling them over to this window. Again, we’re looking to raise another £40 for the Memorial Hall Fund.
There’s also still room for some additional Calendar Boys or Calendar Girls to take part! If interested, please e-mail the blog team at parwich@hotmail.co.uk.

It’s Wednesday again and the latest issue of the Ashbourne News Telegraph is out. Here are the items that relate to our immediate area:
- p.3 ‘Traffic lights under attack’: a short piece on the temporary lights on the B5056 and a comment from Ashbourne Police Officer Rachael Baggaley, saying damage has been reported over the last two or three weeks and urging people with information to call 0345 123333. (Click here to see the most recent post on this at PARWICH.ORG.)
- p.4 An excellent feature along on PARWICH.ORG’s Special fund raising Advent widows, with photos of Tony and Shaun, both dressed and undressed. (Click here to see their article, ‘Calendar Boys Go Blue‘.)
- p.6 A page spread on the launch of Jo-anne Jewett’s new book “The Beautiful Truth” on Monday at Bennett’s in Ashbourne. (Click here to see PARWICH.ORG post.)

For many years the Parwich Guizers (also known as the Brothm Mummers) have been bringing festive cheer to Parwich and beyond. Last Saturday, the group (Denis, Roy, Ben, Arnold, Rob, Ken and Brian) ventured out on the road again, taking their traditional Christmas play to Buxton in the afternoon, and to various local pubs in the evening.
You are invited to join the tour, watch Bold Slasher swinging his sword, and see the Doctor and his gurdy gout on this video:
By double-clicking on the video window, you can also watch this clip in a larger widescreen mode.
It is possible they will also magically appear on Christmas eve in the village, maybe at The Sycamore and The British Legion. Click here for more information on the Guizers and their play.

A few days ago, Fenny Bentley church held an organ concert to celebrate the refurbishment of the organ, completed earlier this year by Groves of Nottingham at a cost of £11,000. Several people from Parwich attended the concert, whose second half was provided by Christian Cartwright of ‘Pipes in the Peak’ at Dovedale Garage, Thorpe. Listen to extracts from his music here –

The above group will be coming to give us a day’s teaching on what to do if you find a child in a life threatening situation.
It will be on Saturday 31st January 2009 in the Memorial Hall, and will run from 9 to 5, and will be free.
All areas of emergency situations involving children will be covered, including choking, drowning, poisoning, fits etc. We will have lectures in the morning and then spend the afternoon in (scarily) realistic scenarios outside, around the hall and in the village.
If you are a parent, a grandparent, a child minder, a teacher or just someone who would like to know how to help a child in an emergency, this course would be ideal for you.

Parwich resident, Jo-anne Jewett, launched her new book “The Beautiful Truth: make up made easy” today. There was a potential mishap last Saturday with the whole stock of the book nearly being left in the rain outside an empty house by the delivery men. Fortunately the Vicar, out walking the dog, was able to intercede, and offer temporary sanctuary at the Vicarage.
