A Parwich resident reports a theft of power tools from their garage on Friday night or Saturday morning. Please check your own garages and/or sheds are secure. Christmas is a time when everyone needs to take extra precautions.
If you saw anything suspicious in the Chestnut Cottages/ Sycamore Cottages area during this period please let the Police know (tel 0345 123 3333).
Ben And Martin put up the village map today, on the south approach road to the village, at the entrance to Stephen Dale’s yard. Thank you to Stephen for letting us site it there.
If you would like a paper copy of the map to keep at home for easy reference, then please attach a comment here, or contact us at martin@orchidserve.com, or phone us on 529.
We’re not quite sure how this happened – but a nice article appeared in today’s “Fenland Citizen” on the subject of last night’s Strictly Come Dancing shenanigans at the Sycamore, featuring lengthy quotes from Janet. Click here to read the article in full.
Meanwhile, Friday’s Derby Evening Telegraph included a article on the various changes planned for the Bennetts group of department stores, with extensive quotes throughout from incoming managing director – and Parwich resident – Simon Ingham. Click here to read the article in full.
“We are all totally on cloud nine. It’s unbelievable. We are so happy for Camilla.” – Tom’s dad Stuart.
“Everyone was really happy for him when he won. It’s a close-knit community and everyone knows him.” – Janet, landlady of the Sycamore.
“People know him here as Tom and it’s strange to think of him as a celebrity because he’s so normal when he comes back to the village.” – Reverend Christopher Harrison.
Moving on to our hotly anticipated series of EXCITING MYSTERY WINDOWS, we can once again reveal a brand new blushing Parwich Calendar Boy (and his secret admirer).
To find out who’s baring his manly physique beneath that bowler, please click on the hat!
Once again, thanks to all who contributed towards the £40 target.
And to complete our series of seasonally saucy snaps, here is our sixth and final EXCITING MYSTERY WINDOW…
We’re calling this image “Stocking Filler”. To find out which Parwich Calendar Girl is wearing the stockings in question, we need to raise at least £40 by Christmas Eve.
If we hit that target (and let’s hope that we exceed it), then we’ll be opening the mystery window on Wednesday morning.
After Friday’s performance at The Sycamore, The A52s have made available on Youtube some highlights of their performance.
Your chance to sing along once again to I Saw My Baby Wearing Santa’s Beard or Death is not the End – alternatively if you were unfortunate enough to miss the gig, see what all the fuss was about:

“I’d just like to thank family and friends, everyone at the pub in Parwich…”
OK, so PARWICH.ORG is a little drunk right now. But quite understandably so, as it’s not every day that a Parwich lad wins – yes, WINS! – BBC1’s Strictly Come Dancing.
Down at the Sycamore, we were in absolute uproar over tonight’s well deserved result – especially following Tom and Camilla’s truly stunning final freestyle show dance, which had to rank as one of the absolute highlights of the whole season.
Congratulations to both of them, and of course to Tom’s wife Clare – and also to Stuart and Rosemary, who must be two of the proudest parents in the country right now.
PARWICH.ORG apologises for posting today’s calendar entry a little later than usual. That’s because PARWICH.ORG is still nursing a bit of a sore head, brought on by immoderate imbibing at last night’s splendid A52s gig.
From now until Christmas Day, we’ll be doubling up the number of images on the the daily calendar. Click the door marked “20” to display today’s pair of frosty nature studies.
Meanwhile, our quest to unmask the man beneath the bowler hat continues. We’re already just over halfway towards raising our £40 target – but as we’ve still got at least one more Calendar Model waiting in the wings, time is of the essence!
Donations can be made online, or via the collecting tin on the bar of the Sycamore, or by contacting Mike Atkinson, Jane Bennett or Peter Trewhitt.
Everyone is welcome to come at watch the Strictly Come Dancing finals at the Sycamore this evening. As always there is the wide screen telly and lots of good cheer. The Pub is now redecorated and Janet’s new carpet is revealed!
Part one of the finals starts at 6-40pm and the final two couples dance again at 9pm.
The phone lines for the first part open at approximately 7-50pm and close at 9pm. Then they open again during the second part of the finals for the two dances last dances, but you will have to watch the Show to know when.
Then that is it for another year. (Well no, there is the champion of champion’s show on Christmas Day, which will include our very own … guess who!)
The A52s packed the pub last night with their Christmas gig, with people clustering round the doorways unable to get into the bar. An excellent evening; hopefully there will be lots more. Thank you to John FS for these two photos:
This evening the Strictly Come Dancing finals starts at 6-40pm, with all couples dancing a Ball Room and a Latin dance. Voting on the first part starts around 7-50pm, with lines closing at 9pm in the second part of the programme. The couple with the lowest score will be knocked out.
The remaining two couples will then dance a Viennese Waltz and their Show Dance. The lines will re-open during the Show, with the winner being decided only on the ensuing phone votes
All three couples chose the same Ball Room dance, the Foxtrot. Tom and Camilla are looking forward to dancing the Foxtrot, which is their highest scoring dance so far, and have chosen the Salsa for their Latin dance in the first part of the Finals.
With last semi-finals’ scoring controversy, last week’s scores will be carried forward to the first part of tonight’s Show meaning Tom will start in either joint second or bottom, so it will be essential that Tom not only finds favour with the judges but also does well on the public vote.
Tom is the current bookies’ favourite to win, and may be helped by Rachel’s ‘back injury’ in training. There were a lot of column yards given over to last week’s voting fiasco. Let’s hope there is no repeat of last week’s judges scores, or we could have the same problems all over again.
Here is the round up of Tom’s week in the press, with increased broadsheeet participation, but not including much on the voting controversy as we do not have sufficient time or space: Continue Reading »
During the evening of Wednesday 10th December 2008 someone stole a farm gate from a field entrance on the edge of Parwich. The gate had been fitted so it could not be simply lifted off its hinges like many. The thieves would have needed a hammer or tools and abit of time to remove it and then take it away.
As you leave Parwich towards Ballidon, you get to the sharp right hand bend/triangle, with a lane off to the left. If you turn left, towards Pikehall, the gate was the first on the left.
If anyone saw any persons or vehicles in suspicious circumstances, at that location, on that evening (in particular between 8.30 – 9.45 pm), can they please contact me on 0345 123 33 33.
Can people be aware that agricultural type thefts seem to be on the increase. If they see anything that is suspicious in any way please ring us at the time.
Please note the new number 0345, instead of 0845. I’m told its even cheaper to contact us now.
The Police remind everyone that Christmas is not a good time to forget your normal security measures:
As the festive season rapidly approaches, the criminal opportunists in our communities will be preparing to take advantage of the fact that we are all busy getting ready for the celebrations, so we should be extra security conscious.
In one in three burglaries, the thief doesn’t have to force entry to gain access to a home, as residents leave windows or doors open when they are out or in another part of the house. Prevention need not cost money, simply closing and locking doors is sufficient to prevent these unwanted incidents occurring.
Click the door marked “19” to display today’s snowy window.
And once you’ve done that, there’s a new EXCITING MYSTERY WINDOW to reveal. Just who IS Parwich’s answer to Nigella, and where DID she get those beautiful…
…well, click the door to find out!
Thanks to all who donated. And we’re not done yet…
As time is tight, we’re ploughing straight on with our next Parwich Calendar Boy (and his mystery admirer). To find out who’s lurking beneath that bowler, we need to raise another £40. Please donate online, or via the collecting tin in the pub, or via a member of the blog team.
Irene Ratcliffe, PDNPA Deputy Chair & Derbyshire County Councilor, and Jim Dixon, PDNPA Chief Executive, are to visit Parwich on the afternoon Tuesday 13th January.
On the day they will visit various local facilities and meet members of the community. Anyone from Parwich interested in meeting these senior leaders of the Peak District National Park Authority during these events can contact John Fern, head of communications, on 01629 816356 or email john.fern@peakdistrict.gov.uk.
The Authority also wants the neighbouring hamlets to be included, so interested parties from Alsop, Ballidon and Pikehall should also get in touch.
The event is a chance for Irene and Jim to meet with residents, business owners and parish councillors in the village to discuss any issues that affect village life.
They will also discuss the work of the Peak District National Park Authority in the area to find out what is working well and areas where improvements could be made.
We will provide more details as they become available.
Please click the door marked “18” to reveal today’s window.
And once you’ve done that…
We’re nearly halfway towards reaching our £40 target for the fourth of our EXCITING MYSTERY WINDOWS – so with luck there will be time for one or two more Parwich Calendar Models, before our Advent Calendar reaches its conclusion.
To reveal Parwich’s answer to Nigella Lawson, please make a donation online, or via the tin at the Sycamore, or via one of our blog team.
As you are probably aware many of us have the names of our houses as addresses, and rarely use the street name (if it exists). A village map is in the process of being produced, and it is hoped that when this is sited in the village it will help visitors find their way around. This process is well underway and we look forward to its completion.
However in the interim there have been difficulties for emergency vehicles trying to find addresses in the village. Recently we had a fire engine and the senior fire officer up here at Gibbons Bank by mistake looking for Monsdale Lane.
Today the emergency ambulance needed help finding a house which had made a 999 call. The emergency services have asked for our help – especially with the festive season coming up.
As a temporary solution permission has been given to site a copy of the First Responders village map on a board on the roadside near to the south entrance to the village, next to the drive to Stephen Dale’s yard. We hope this will meet with the village’s approval.
However if anyone is unhappy about this, or has any alternative better solutions to the problem, we are more than happy to reconsider. Do please ring us on 390 529 or add comments to this blog entry.
Here’s to a healthy trouble-free Christmas (or is that an oxymoron?)
Season’s Greetings from Jean and Martin Compton, on behalf of Parwich First Responders
If you’re looking for a cracking way to celebrate the run into Christmas week, come on down to The Sycamore on Friday 19th December where The A52s (Parwich’s foremost rock-folk combo) will try very hard to entertain you.

Admission free. Earplugs cost a fiver. Each.

It’s Wednesday again and the latest issue of the Ashbourne News Telegraph is out. Because of the paper’s printing deadlines and the BLF decision to announce the Memorial Hall grant today, on a day when the most important piece of news for Alsop, Ballidon, Parwich and Pikehall breaks, there are almost no items in today’s paper that relate to our immediate area:
p. 21 NUF Centenary to be marked locally by a visit from the national President (7-30pm Tuesday 23rd Dec at the Bluebell Inn Tissington).
p. 60 A page spread on Tom & Camilla getting through to the Strictly Come Dancing Final (Click here to see the article).
p.62 Cavendish Dominoes current league table positions: the Legion in third place and the Sycamore in tenth.
Following last week’s successful book launch, Jo-anne would like to offer local residents her new book, “The Beautiful Truth: Make-up Made Easy”, at the special rate of £10.
This offer is only available to locals and to take advantage of it, please contact Jo-anne at the Horns (347387), at Hope Croft, or by email (info@joannejewett.com).
To reveal our EXCITING MYSTERY PARWICH CALENDAR GIRL – who will be giving our readers a very special cookery demonstration – please donate online, or via the collecting tin in the pub, or via members of the blog team. Once again, our target is £40…
