Parwich School PTA raffle

chaffinch paper weightThe Christmas raffle is a major source of fund raising for Parwich School PTA. Everyone is always very generous with raffle prizes and this year we obviously have the added bonus of the Crown Derby paper weight.  Any further prizes can be left at the School up to Friday 12th December.

Tickets are normally sold when people come to watch the school play (2pm Mon 15th and 7pm Tues 16th). However this year tickets can also be bought through the school until 3pm Tuesday 16th .

The draw will be made on Wednesday 17th December outside School starting at 3.15pm.  The idea being that we can hand the prizes out as the kids come out of school. Names are put on the back of all tickets and a contact number for non village people and those who can’t be at the draw so we can get prizes to them should they win.

With thanks for your support.

Parwich School Presents…

Parwich School is proud to present their Christmas play Dick Whittington.

whittington

The first of two performances will take place on Monday 15th December at 2.00pm. The second will commence on Tuesday 16th December at 7.00pm. The venue will be the Memorial Hall. All welcome.

Sandra S has contacted us with the following thoughts on the current state of the B5056 between Fenny Bentley and the Parwich turn-off, with particular reference to the so-called “temporary” traffic lights:

1. Traffic lights.

Whilst searching for information on another subject, I noticed that the B5056 used to be the A524. How much sooner would the traffic light problem be dealt with if the road was classified as an A-road, and why was it downgraded in the first place?

The amount of heavy lorries putting so much pressure on the road should surely mean that a substantial surface should be put down to take the weight, or the lorries should be re-routed onto an existing A-road.

We do see roads with signs for no more than 7.5 tonnes.

Perhaps someone would like to approach the council with the above questions. I did ask Highways some time ago why this very busy road was not called an A-road? I did not get an answer, but more of a mumble.

P.S The traffic lights are battery powered apparently, and over a weekend they can run out of juice.

2. Road safety near the Bentley Brook.

Because so many people from Parwich travel on the B5056 past the Bentley Brook pub, would they please be mindful that where the road sinks on a regular basis just prior to the pub, there is actually a gaping gap under the road there. One day, the road will give – and on a selfish note, I just hope that I am not the one travelling by at the time. Has anyone noticed the wall listing?

Lorries pass on the opposite side to the pub laden with goods. On the way back, they are empty. I am certain that if they were laden coming back, then many more places on the B5056 would be at risk.

3. The chevron sign.

A van collided with the wall at the bottom of Ravenscliffe Farm next to the B5056. The wall was damaged. Some of it was knocked down. The gate and posts were obliterated. The chevron sign was also knocked off of its posts and sent into our field. That happened in October 2007.

I consider the chevron sign to be quite important on a fairly sharp bend. The wall and chevron sign were only put back up by the council last week. It has taken one year to put right.

It is a shame the cement in the wall will not last, due to it having been done in frosty weather.

The 50 mph signs are a good thing to help with road safety, but I am not too amused by the fact that signs have been erected on our land without even a please or thank you!

Bedside Cabinet Needs A New Home

This child’s bedside cabinet has become surplus to requirements and is available free to a good home. It has been hand-painted with a space theme. There is some paint damage on the top surface, but otherwise it is in good condition.

If you can make use of it, ring Mike and Sue on 334 to arrange collection.

ASHBOURNE FAMILY FUN NIGHT

The Ashbourne Churches Together Carol Singers numbered about 40 last year – we would like to double that number this year, so bring a friend. You don’t have to be a good singer – just happy to sing! We gather at the top of the Market Place at 6.30pm for a quick rehearsal before the Lantern Parade joins us. The parade leaves from their starting point, School Lane, at the same time – 6.30pm.

LIVE NATIVITY PRESENTATION – Watch or Dress up and join in

At 7.30pm there will be a ‘live Nativity’ presentation on Church Street during the late night shopping . From 11am on the 12th, it will be possible to visit the animals at the rear of Marion Antiques, 23 Church Street. You can also –
– Visit Santa’s Grotto at £2.50 per visit including a gift
– Enjoy refreshments for £1 – drink plus home baking

Local businesses and the community are generously contributing prizes, costumes etc for the live nativity. Children who come at 7.15pm to Winfield, Rose & Wood dentists on Church Street, dressed as shepherds and angels, will be able to take part in the presentation. There should even be a donkey for Mary to ride on!

Tom’s highest score so far

Tom has convinced the judges this week that he is a dancer, with his foxtrot gaining three tens. The competition could hardly be closer, with three of the four couples in equal first after the first round.

The Foxtrot (including some great footage shot in The Sycamore, from 0:53).

His rumba attracted mixed comments, but overall Tom and Camilla are in second place. However, this may not be enough to ensure they get through to the semi-finals.

The Rumba.

The results can be seen on tomorrow night’s show at 8-15pm on BBC 1 (Sunday). Will Tom escape the dance off?

Democracy in National Parks

The Defra consultation on direct elections to National Park Authorities (NPA) closed a week ago, but the recent visit of the Politics Show to Parwich got us galvanised and the Village Action Group sent in a response.  The Action Group strongly supported the position of readers of PARWICH.ORG and Parwich Parish Council, arguing for some form of direct elections to NPA Boards.

The letter quoted a senior civil servant who described National Parks as ‘the last outpost of colonialism‘, however they refrained from quoting a Parwich resident who was a little more colourful ‘ **** Park planners: a condom on the p**** of progress‘.  Fortunately Defra agreed to receiving this contribution after their deadline, and it can be read in full by clicking here.

Elvis Is Cancelled!

We’re sorry to report that Elvis has had to pull out of his performance at The Legion this Saturday evening. We understand that at this busy festive time, his shelf-stacking commitments in the Biscuit Department at Tescos have proved too much for him.

No worries though! Shaun has stepped up to the mark and will provide us with one of his famous karaoke nights instead. Come on down and sing your hearts out!

Who's behind the mystery door?

Today’s Advent Calendar window takes us into the realm of surrealist “conceptual” art. Why this image wasn’t shortlisted for this year’s Turner Prize, we’ll never know. Click on the window marked “6” to reveal it.

Meanwhile, tension mounts over our EXCITING MYSTERY WINDOW, whose contents will be revealed once we reach the target of £25. Please click here to make an online donation. Donations can also be handed to Peter Trewhitt, Jane Bennett, Mike Hughes or Mike Atkinson in person.

Strictly Quarter Finals

Tom and CamillaThis week on Strictly Come Dancing Tom and Camilla are dancing a rumba and a foxtrot. The programme starts at 6-05pm this evening with everyone welcome to come and watch it on the big screen at the Sycamore Inn, which has been visited twice by BBC film crews this week. Click here to see the vicar’s video clip of Tom’s ‘quiet’ drink on Tuesday evening.

The phone lines are open this eveniong from approximately 7-25pm to 9pm. Although Tom has got over his dose of flu, the competition will be very close. The public vote will be estential for anyone to be sure of getting through to the semi-finals.

Here is our regular round up of his media week:

Parwich Advent Calendar – Day Five.

Click the door to reveal the window...

Who's behind the mystery door?

Starting from today, we have added an EXCITING MYSTERY DOOR to our regular Advent Calendar.

Clicking on the EXCITING MYSTERY DOOR will reveal a pair of strapping Parwich residents, AS YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN THEM BEFORE!

(We anticipate that this one will be a particular thrill for our female readers.)

However, there’s a catch.

We shall only reveal what lies behind the EXCITING MYSTERY DOOR once the sum of TWENTY FIVE POUNDS has been raised for the Memorial Hall Fund.

And that’s where YOU come in, curious and generous reader.

By clicking on the EXCITING MYSTERY DOOR, you will be magically transported to the land of “PayPal”, where a highly trained team of Santa’s robots will be happy to relieve you of a modest donation.

For those who prefer to make their donations in the more traditional way, you are welcome to hand them to members of our blog team in person: Peter T, Jane B, Mike H or Mike A.

Once the princely sum of TWENTY FIVE POUNDS has been raised, we shall reveal the EXCITING MYSTERY WINDOW in all its glory!

Ladies of Parwich, you may wish to add smelling salts to your shopping lists in readiness.

Smelly Post

Septic tank advice / recommendation

Can anyone recommend a good septic tank adviser / fixer? Our septic tank is not smelling too good but I don’t want to take a name out of the yellow pages and then find that I’ve called a cowboy who advises us to do lots of things which didn’t actually need doing.

Thank you,

Tom and Camilla at Sycamore Inn

Tom and CamillaTom Chambers and his dance partner Camilla Dallerup will be visiting Parwich today.  This is only the second time Tom has managed to get home since his wedding.  They will be at the Sycamore Inn around 8pm.

He is keen to see as many of his old friends as possible and to thank everyone for the local support he has received.  Also at this stage in the competition, with so little dividing the contestants on the leader board, public popularity is essential if they are to get through this Saturday’s quarter finals.

police-safer-neighbourhood-logo Update From Your Local Officer
Dec 2008 / Jan 2009

A few crimes to report – At around 2100 hours, 12th September 2008, damage was caused to a house door in Kniveton village by an unknown person banging on it. Also at Kniveton, on 27th September 2008, at 3pm, a Distraction Burglary occurred. A male caller stopped at a Cottage, and asked for a container of water, as his car was overheating. Whilst the occupant went to fill the container, the caller stole a wallet from the premises. On the same day a similar incident occurred at Shirley.

We have had a few thefts from motor vehicles. Between 14th July and 27th September 2008 a Land Rover Discovery parked at a farm at Parwich, was broken into and items stolen. On 17th September 2008 between Continue Reading »
