For those of you who may have missed yesterday’s Politics Show on BBC1, here’s a chance to catch up with the segment of the programme which featured Parwich residents (Lynette, Peter, Chris, Ray and Karen) expressing their desire to see greater democratic accountability within the Peak District National Park Authority. Well done to all of them for making their cases so eloquently.

Derbyshire police have launched a new telephone number today.
0345 123 3333
The force has changed just one digit of its existing number to make the new number easier for people to remember. The number 0345 123 3333 is now their non emergency number. People can ring it to speak about any policing matter which is not a 999 emergency.
It replaces the former number of 0845 123 3333. Under the new system callers will pay no more than they do for calling geographical numbers which begin 01 and 02.

Parwich Guizers and Mummers have been performing their ancient play for the last 25 years. This guizing play used to be performed in Biggin-by-Hartington in the 1930s and perhaps for many years before.
The group will be out again on Saturday December 6th, collecting for the Red Cross (Congo Fund) and a local charity.

Last year the London Concertante played in Ashbourne for the first time, their lead violinist has moved to Carsington so it was a ideal venue. There were a few of us in the audience from Parwich and we thoroughly enjoyed a Christmas Baroque Concert. The church was full, so it is worth prebooking your seats either online or by ringing.

We have been reliably informed that Tom & Camilla will be in the village on Tuesday evening, appearing at The Sycamore. The BBC will also be present, so everybody will be welcome at the pub ready for 8pm. Fingers crossed for tonight – the results.

Looking at the lush summer photos provided by Mr & Mrs Lamb below, it is quite striking to see just how different our landscape can be across the seasons. These photographs were taken on Saturday afternoon around the church at Ballidon. Thank goodness for cosy fires and warm cups of tea!

The following photographs were taken in July this year (when the sun did shine). We spent a week in Parwich on the occasion of my wife’s 70th Birthday & every one in the village made us very welcome.
We hope that all flood damage has now been cleared and that everything is getting back to normal

Tom and Camilla’s waltz split the judges, gaining a 10 from one and a 7 from another. Their total score of 70 for both the waltz and the samba placed them in their lowest position so far on the judges’ leader board; second from bottom. So the public phone vote will be very important this week.

This week on Strictly Come Dancing Tom and Camilla are dancing both a waltz and a samba. The programme starts at 6-05pm this evening with everyone welcome to come and watch it on the big screen at the Sycamore Inn (along with a BBC camera crew).
The phone lines are open from approximately 7-35pm to 9pm. Tom, although the most consistent scorer, has not matched some of the others’ highs. However are his hopes for a 10 this week threatened by the flu?
The betting is close between Tom and Austin as favourite to win the series, but at present Tom might just have the edge at around 6 or 7 to 4. In the Ashbourne News Telegraph poll he continues to be the favourite with nearly 60% wanting him to win (Lisa and Rachael are joint second with just over 14% each.).

Freda and Sheila are now settled in their delightful flat in Ashbourne after a successful move today. It is a major wrench for Freda having spent almost all her life here, but she is really pleased with her new home & Sheila is so excited, it is a joy to see. They have already had their first visitors and they are really looking forward to seeing other familiar faces. They want to keep close links with the village, already they are booked in for the Over 60’s Christmas Lunch.
It would be really nice if between us all we could organise some transport over to Parwich when we have different events on. For example, the first one being the Christmas Carol Service, when Freda’s annual Christmas Cake will be raffled (maybe someone could collect them & someone else takes them home). If you are willing to help out occasionally please let Jane B (665) or Peter (287) know.

It’s 7.50pm, you’ve still got 10 minutes left to get over to The Green for your supper. The fish & chips definitely gets the thumbs up from the Bennett home. The fish was light and not heavily battered, the chips tasty & appropriately “soggy” (just perfect).
Let’s hope it will be a regular destination for the van & something easy for us to enjoy on a Friday night.
p.s. Can we bring Fish & Chips to the Cinema on a Friday night?

Item 1. Welcome
PC COOPER welcomed all to the meeting. He explained the purpose of these meetings – to get local residents and their representatives together to discuss concerns, and then by working together with other agencies to deal with any issues. He explained how the meetings should oversee issues raised through Priority Profiles.

Pilates and New Year’s resolutions!
A number of people have mentioned to me that they would like to start Pilates in the New Year. Whilst there are a few spaces available for both classes at present, could I ask people to e mail Tricia direct to reserve a space to avoid disappointment! triciadurdey@uwclub.net. The classes are on a Wednesday 6pm-7pm and 7.15pm – 8.15pm. They run in half termly blocks and payment of £7 per class is made for a block of classes (usually 5 so a payment of £35). Concessions are available. Those who are already signed up for the classes will automatically be allocated a space in the next set unless they tell Tricia to the contrary. Thanks Rebecca.

Having been here for the Politics Show on Wednesday, BBC cameras will be in Parwich again tomorrow.
This time they are back to film Tom’s local supporters watching Strictly Come Dancing at the Sycamore Inn. The programme starts at 6-05pm on Saturday evening, with the wide screen TV and chip butties laid on in the pub. This week Tom and Camilla are dancing both a waltz and a samba, and they desperately want to achieve a 10. As it is so close dance-wise, the non-dancing publicity will also be vital.
Janet would welcome as many people as possible to block sight of the building work from the cameras. Indeed she deserves a big thanks for keeping the shop and pub going during the flood damage repairs.

Do you have any ideas? Can you help?
The PARWICH.ORG team are looking to make use of the potential of our websites to encourage sponsorship of the new Memorial Hall and use the sites to generate some cash for the redevelopment.
We have dabbled our toes with such as the commission on the Y-Not Festival ticket sales, Christmas Cards and on-line donations. We have lots of ideas, but are inexperienced in what will work best. Also we feel it is important that any advertising does not interfere with using the site or put off our users.
On-line fund raising means we can access a much larger pool of potential donors.

The A52s continue their world tour of Parwich with a gig in The Sycamore on Friday 19th December starting around 9.00pm. The band are waiving their enormous appearance fee as a gesture of goodwill to the people of the world.
On offer will be an inexplicable mix of folk and rock…..plus the band have been feverishly learning some unusual Christmas songs! Come along for a festive fandango!

Rush to Fenny Bentley church after Strictly Come Dancing this Saturday to support a concert on the newly-refurbished church organ, which begins at 7.30 pm.
Christian Cartwright of ‘Pipes in the Peak’ at Dovedale Garage will join with Chris Dell of Ashbourne and Martyn Davis of Hulland and Tissington churches, to present a lively and varied programme of classical and modern music. According to Henry Groves and Son, the organ builders who carried out what was the first refurbishment of the organ in over 100 years, it is an excellent instrument which should now be good for at least another century.
They have certainly done an excellent job and we hope that many people will come to celebrate this milestone in the life of St. Edmund’s church. Admission to the concert is free but donations for the church will be invited.

The following was sent to us by the Local History Society:
It seems a shame to let the centenary year of the publication of Baden-Powell’s book “Scouting for Boys” pass by without a mention. (For notes on the general history of the movement click here to see the Wikipedia entry.)
Today the Society got a note pointing out that R T Adamson’s book “Seventy-five Years of Scouting in Derbyshire” lists amongst the early troops in Derbyshire a Parwich Troop (first recorded date May 1911) under Scoutmaster R L Tickle. Coincidentally there is also in today’s Ashbourne News Telegraph an article on the Cyber Scouts (1st Derbyshire Dales Scout Group).
A number of local youngsters are currently involved in the Cyber Scouts.
The Parwich & District Local History Society would like to hear from anyone with information on local Scouting from those early days in 1911 to the present. Were there also other local troops at Alsop or Pikehall or Ballidon or elsewhere? Do leave any comments below or email information and/or photographs to parwichhistory@hotmail.com. If there is sufficient response the Society will include a fuller article in our News Quarterly.

Dorothy Foden, of Brook Cottage, was well loved by many people in Parwich and beyond. She was very much at the heart of St. Peter’s church, as well as being a strong supporter of Parwich Methodist chapel. A new altar frontal in her memory, donated by Brian, was last week put in place in the chapel at St Peter’s. It was made by Jenifer Baines of Littleover, Derby, using the fabric ‘Venetian Tapestry’. Jenifer is an old friend of Andrew and Rachel Robinson, as well as being someone I have got to know through the Derbyshire-India links. The frontal enhances the chapel enormously, and it is very fitting that it should be in a part of the church which is also used by Parwich Methodists for their twice-monthly service.
The frontal will be dedicated during the Carol Service on Sunday 14th December at 5.00 pm, along with the first of the kneelers which have been made in memory of Ambrose Wilton.

Jo-anne Jewett’s book, “The Beautiful Truth – Make-up is Easy, Don’t Believe the Hype.” is being launched on December 8th at Bennetts, Ashbourne at 1.00 pm on Monday 8th December. A champagne and canapés reception will follow from 5.30 pm at The Horns.
Jo-anne would welcome friendly faces from the village, so pop in and have a look and a chat.

The Big Lottery Fund grants committee met today to discuss the Memorial Hall application (amongst others) for a community building grant. Have we been awarded £500,000 to build our new Memorial Hall?
The BLF will be officially announcing their decision on Wednesday 17th December.

The BBC’s East Midlands Politics Show are sending a reporter to Parwich on Wednesday morning to find out about our ideas on local democracy. Readers of PARWICH.ORG will know that Defra are conducting a consultation on direct elections to the National Park Authorities, and that there is local interest in this issue.
Parwich Parish Council support some form of direct elections to the Peak Park Authority as do 90% of those who responded to our on-line poll. Any further comments added below will be passed on to the BBC reporter.

Parwich Parish Council would like to thank everyone who turned out yesterday for the work day. An incredible amount of debris and rubbish was removed. The Brook is flowing much more freely. Further work to remove sediment and excessive vegetation growth will be undertaken by a mechanical digger. Also an especial thanks to the WI who made cakes and to all who helped with the refreshments.

The countdown continues, with the BLF grants committee making the decision on our new Memorial Hall application tomorrow.
We do not know when we will be officially informed of the result, and we may not be able to make a public announcement until the Lottery press release is ready for circulation.
(However the Memorial Hall Management Committee are meeting at the Sycamore Inn tomorrow evening at 8pm.)

Having spent virtually all their lives in Parwich, Freda & Sheila are moving to Ashbourne at the end of November. They have a delightful two bedroomed flat with super south facing views overlooking the town and up towards Derby Road.
It will be extremely sad to see them both leave Parwich but hopefully they will be regular visitors, especially if there are any volunteers to help them with transport from time to time.
Last year Sheila enjoyed a memorable helicopter ride for her 60th birthday and Freda is renowned for her fabulous Christmas cake which is raffled for the Church. Also their table decorations always enhance the Open Gardens teas.
They both spent their early childhood at Mellow Meadow Farm before moving into the village, firstly at Japonica and then Shaw Lane Cottage; in 1995 Freda moved to Smithy Close, with Sheila living for some years at Bradbourne Mill Farm.
Freda and Sheila, best wishes to you both in your new home!
