Today sees the launch of the Royal British Legion’s 2008 Poppy Appeal:
The Royal British Legion provides financial, social and emotional support to millions who have served and are currently serving in the Armed Forces, and their dependants. Currently, nearly 10.5 million people are eligible for our support and we receive thousands of calls for help every year.
The Legion was founded in 1921 as a voice for the ex-Service community and over 380,000 members continue to ensure that this voice does not go unheard. Although the needs of ex-Service people have changed over the years, we are still there to safeguard their welfare, interests and memory. British service people are in action around the world every day of the year.
Locally you can get your poppies at the Parwich Legion Club or the Sycamore Inn. Alternatively you can click here to make a donation online. Continue Reading »

Jean Allen, of Croft Avenue, who lived for many years at Woodeaves, just outside Fenny Bentley, has shown me some splendid photos of people from Alsop en le Dale dating back to the 1920s. Her father, Charlie Allen, was stationmaster at Alsop when the trains still ran on that line. These provide a remarkable glimpse of Alsop church and parish, from a time when there was a Sunday School and choir!
See them below, or click here (which includes a full screen option) –
I have also uploaded onto Youtube some photos from our link diocese in India, Patna, which date from the late 1800s. These were shown to me earlier this month by the Bishop of Patna, Philip Marandih, and show scenes from the early years of the Christian missionaries among the Santal tribe in the village of Taljhari. Click here to see them.

Thursday’s East Midlands Today (6-30pm on BBC 1) will have an interview with Tom’s dance partner, Camilla. Also let’s hope Clare is to have a full, uninterrupted honeymoon, at an unpublicised location, after Strictly Come Dancing is finished.

Please be aware of a scam which is in circulation again.
A parcel delivery company post a card through the letterbox, stating that you need to ring a telephone line to enquire about a parcel that needs to be delivered. However, when you ring the telephone number, you are automatically charged a premium rate for the call. There is obviously no parcel.
Any similar calls or concerns, please contact PhonePayPlus (ICSTIS) on 0800 500 212, the regulatory body for premium rate calls.

When I was about 10 my grandfather said when you get older time speeds up. I did not take him seriously, but though I still have 30 years to reach the age my grandfather was when he made this remark, it can’t be Wednesday again already, can it? Well, if not my Ashbourne News Telegraph has come early.
Here are the items related to our immediate area:
- p.4 A full page feature on Tom, Strictly and his wedding. (Click here to read the article.)
- p.5 A short article on the Poll here at PARWICH.ORG on Local Democracy in the Peak Park: a survey.
- p.53 Darts & Dominoes league table positions, with the Legion and the Sycamore standing 4th in Darts div A and div B respectively and the Legion 4th in Dominoes div A. Is four our lucky number?
Here are some further items that might be of interest: Continue Reading »

As well as the Credit Crunch on Wednesday’s Breakfast TV, there is more to look out for.
Thank you Stuart for letting us know that Rosemary is being interviewed on the Radio Derby breakfast show (7-30am onwards on Wednesday) and that Tom is being interviewed on East Midlands Today (6-30pm on BBC1 Wednesday), possibly including some further Parwich clips. We will add the link when the TV programme comes online, as well as links to any ‘It Takes Two’ clips.

Thank you to Lynne G for sending this in.
I was watching BBC breakfast just after 7.20 this morning when they were doing a series on how people are coping with the credit crunch (it’s probably one of those items that gets repeated a few times through the whole programme). They said that tomorrow (Wednesday) the item will be coming from the Peak District where they will be seeing how small villages are coping with the credit crunch. Could be interesting – let’s hope they decide to come to Parwich!

A home security company has been contacting residents in the area. Although this is a legitimate company, they use high pressure selling techniques and often sell over-priced alarm systems to elderly people that are sometimes too complicated to use. They also sell long term warranties, ie. a 20 year warranty, for maintenance on the systems.
Always obtain several quotes. Even if the visit is solicited, householders have 7 days cooling off period. If you do go ahead, do not let work start straight away and don’t sign anything to say that work can commence before the cooling off period is over. Thank you.

Tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday 2-45pm) an Indian Music presentation is to take place at Parwich Primary School. Parents are welcome to attend.
Also, as the fund raising Curry & Quiz Evening had to be cancelled, please think about making a donation to the School to help with the cost of the presentation.

If you took a Tuesday evening stroll along Smithy Lane this Summer, you may have heard the sound of clinking beer bottles, manic strumming, improvised accordions and uncontrollable laughter. This, ladies and gentlemen, was the sound of The A52s creating music. In the first week, the band learned some notes. In the second week, they tried putting them in the right order. As the weeks went by, these top musicians learned enough notes to do a debut gig! Terrifying huh?! We think so too!
The band turned down frantic offers from lesser venues such as the NEC and the O2 Arena, opting instead for the prestigious yet intimate Parwich Legion. The band will appear 8.30 to 9ish on Saturday 8th November. Make a note in your diaries for an evening of fine entertainment. Free admission (in fact, the band may be paying you)!
The A52s is Parwich’s foremost folk-rock band, comprising 4 musicians at the top of their game (which happens to be Snap):

This week Parwich Primary School is holding a Healthy Eating Week. Perhaps the School will be able to add some comments to this post or email ideas to parwich@hotmail.co.uk to help the rest of the community. Also all you ‘non-school children’ out there might have ideas on how we can all eat more healthily.
(If you fancy a go at growing your own vegetables, seeds can be bought at discount rates through Parwich & District Horticultural Society; the Suttons Seeds catalogues will be given out at the Society’s up coming AGM or contact Mike Hart on tel. 456.)

Although technically not in our area, Hoe Grange Farm is only a matter of yards beyond the Ballidon parish boundary. Hoe Grange Holidays based at the farm, recently won two East England Enjoy Excellence Awards from East Midlands Tourism:
- Access for All – Bronze
- Website – Bronze
Of general interest is their website’s useful Local Events page, listing a good range of Peak District events, though unfortunately they do not link on to the relevant event websites. Gold award winners in Derbyshire include Kedleston Hall (best Large Visitor Attraction), Buxton Festival (best Tourism Experience) and East Lodge Hotel at Rowsley (best Small Hotel).
Note. Also we have a new holiday let in our area, The Roost in Parwich. (See the holiday cottage links in the righthand column on most pages.)

I was up dating the parwich film pages here at PARWICH.ORG and noticed that the cinema at the new Quad centre in Derby is up and running. This is the awaited replacement for the much loved old Metro Cinema. Those who have already been do let us know how you have found it, or give us your thoughts on the other cinemas in driving distance.

The response to our first on-line poll at PARWICH.ORG is heartening. So far 37 people have responded of whom:
- 30% don’t know if our views as residents are taken into account by our National Park Authority, and 62% believe they are not.
- 87% believe there should be some direct elections to the National Park Authority Board.
We will forward the results to Defra in response to their consultation on this, so see what others think and continue to have your say by clicking here, the more people who contribute the more they have to listen.

Many thanks to Chris E for pointing out the following:
Gordon Brown had asked Matthew Taylor MP to carry out review looking at how land use and planning can better support rural business and deliver affordable housing. The full report can be seen at the Communities & Local Government website.
Its recommendations include
- a community led affordable housing initiative;
- a trialling of new planning policy in one or more National Parks to limit the increase in second homes;
- new planning policy which accepts that all forms of business can be appropriate in the countryside;
- planning policy should have a flexible approach to home based work spaces.
The government has yet to respond. It would seem that what we have been attempting to achieve in Parwich is ahead of Government policy. Are there opportunities here for our communities; is it possible that we can persuade the Government to support directly local projects as examples of good practice?

The judges’ points put Tom’s American Smooth on this evening’s Strictly Come Dancing in joint first postion, impressive considering it is part of his Stag Do, and he must travel up to Derbyshire in the early hours of Sunday morning. This is only half the final score. Find out the results on Sunday at 8-10pm on BBC 1.

For the first time the male and female celebrities are competing against each other in tonight’s Strictly Come Dancing, at 6-40pm on BBC1. The programme will be shown on the super sized TV at the Sycamore with chip butties to follow and the TV cameras present. Tom and Camilla will be dancing the American Smooth this week. An excellent wedding present for Tom would be to:
You can only vote this evening after the dancing is finished at approximately 8pm up to 9-30pm (see BBC website for details). The results will be announced on the Sunday Show (8-10pm BBC1).

This afternoon’s meeting with Justine Ball, our grants officer for the Big Lottery Fund, was very positive. She met with several of the Project Team: Mike Gerard-Pearse, Brian Beasley, Val Stevenson, Nick Stevenson and Peter Trewhitt. First she looked round the Memorial Hall and the site, and then we moved to the School to access their internet and projection facilities.
We discussed the consultation process, the additional future uses of the Hall that have been identified (e.g. after-school activities and adult education classes) and our strategies to obtain matched funding / in kind donations. Some additional detail was required and several of our outcome measures need rewording to fit into their format, but overall Justine was very complimentary of high standard and thoroughness of our application. Tonight’s ‘It Takes Two‘ on BBC2 kicked of with the story of Tom and Clare’s romance, in the build up to Saturday’s competition and to Tom and Clare’s wedding. Best wishes to both Tom and Clare from all at PARWICH.ORG.
The highlight of this for me has to be Stuart yodeling; it left Tom with a tear in his eye.

The Bishop of Patna, the Rt. Rev’d Philip Marandih, has long been trying to get me to visit his diocese. So when the director of schools for Derby Diocese suggested that I join a trip to India, designed to set up and develop links between schools in Derbyshire and in India, including Patna diocese, I readily accepted her invitation. A few days ago I returned from a tour which took me through the flooded areas of Bihar state, one of the poorest parts of India, to some tribal villages which have been left virtually untouched by India’s recent economic growth.
Christianity was first brought to these peoples – the Santali tribe – in the 1860s, and the first church was built there, in the village of Taljhari, at about the same time as St. Peter’s church in Parwich was being rebuilt. Fenny Bentley school is making links with two schools in this area, one in the tribal village of Barharwa, where it costs only £800 to build a new classroom, and one in the city of Patna, where email links are likely to be better. My tasks during the visit included speaking and preaching on several occasions, and giving three talks to a conference on the Church’s engagement in society in another tribal area, this time in the diocese of Eastern Himalaya.
This is a video clip of the welcome shown to us by the Santali tribespeople of Barharwa –
Other video clips of the visit, and of my visit to Assam earlier this year, may be seen here.

We are really sorry to announce that the Snail Trail is being postponed, there are just not enough venues because of the clash with the half term holidays. However, it will definitely go ahead in spring so hang onto all those items and sell them in the Spring.
