Award Winning Artist in the Village!

Many congratulations to Esther Tyson, our recent artist addition to the village (see previous post).

She has won not one but two(!) prestigious awards for her art work, which are:

The RSPB Award for “Bullfinch Study” and the Capmark Europe Art Award (first prize) for “Early beginnings – Moorhen nest building”.

Interestingly, the Moorhen picture (see below) was based on Esther’s studies of the Parwich village pond.

Both awards were presented by Germaine Greer at the Society of Wildlife Artists Annual Exhibition 2008 at the Mall Galleries, London on the 23rd September (see photo below).

During the afternoon of 13/10/08, there were a number of reported thefts of purses from shoppers in Matlock, Buxton, Bakewell & Chesterfield.

The descriptions of the offenders vary but they were of Eastern European appearance. Two offenders were arrested in Chesterfield but other offenders were still out and about stealing purses/bags. Please be extra vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police.

If you have any information relating to incidents please contact 0845 164 1644.
Derbyshire Constabulary can be contacted on 0845 123 33 33, or in an emergency 999.
Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Order magazines at the Sycamore

Janet asked us to let people know that they can order their magazines via the Shop at the Sycamore.  Either call in or phone Janet on 390 212.

Also last Saturday the Pub was featured in the Derby Evening Telegraph referring back to its winning the Best Community Pub Award in September:

Another Derbyshire pub which has stayed successful despite the trade crisis is the Sycamore Inn, in Parwich.  It scooped two gongs at this year’s Great British Pub Awards, for East and West Midlands Pub of the Year and Community Pub of the Year.

Janet Gosling, who has run the pub for eight years, said the business had stayed central to the village community.  In March, she and her partner, Stephen Conway, opened a shop in the pub, selling vegetables, newspapers and household goods.  Continue Reading »

Autumn Sun

These photos were taken in Wolfscote Dale behind Hartington on Sunday afternoon. It was glorious to see the turning leaves in the sunlight….and such a short drive from Parwich. Makes you forget all about the wet Summer!

The rest of the Blog Team would like to congratulate Christopher and give our very best wishes to him and his family.  Not only are we losing a repected vicar, but also a valued member of the Blog Team, though our loss is Nottingham City Centre Church Group‘s gain:

It is with much sadness that I have announced that we will be moving from Parwich in February – I have been asked to be priest in charge of three churches in the centre of Nottingham.

St. Mary’s is situated in the Lace Market; St. Peter’s is in the heart of the shopping area, next to Marks and Spencer’s, and All Saints is near to the Arboretum and to Trent University.  Our years in Parwich have been wonderful in so many ways, but working in the heart of a major city will also offer some splendid opportunities.

I expect that we will leave Parwich in early February – my licensing service in Nottingham is on Sunday 22nd February at 3.00 pm.   The process of finding a new vicar for Parwich will involve the drawing up of a profile of the group of five parishes, which will be put to possible applicants.  This will be overseen by the bishop and his colleagues, but the main work on the profile needs to be done here.

At least it’s not too far from here – do come and visit!   Details of the parish are at www.nottinghamchurches.org

The take over of Hartington Cheese Factory (previously part of the Dairy Crest Group) by Long Clawson Dairy Ltd has been referred to the Competition Commission (formerly the Monopolies & Mergers Commission) this week.  They are gathering evidence and invite comments from interested parties by 24th October.

Their report may not be available until March 2009, prolonging the uncertainty for the 180 employees.  To find out more see the Competition Commission’s News Release.

Police seek missing person

Derbyshire Police are becoming increasingly concerned for the welfare of a vulnerable missing person, Gemma Nicholls, who is believed to have travelled on public transport from Norfolk to the Derbyshire area over the past few days. She has an ’emergency shelter/tent’ with her so may be camping in the open, on a campsite or staying at a B&B.

She is a white female, 5’8″ tall, aged 27 years, with collar length blonde hair, blue eyes, slim build. She was last seen wearing a white long sleeved t-shirt with a short sleeved pink t-shirt over the top, black jogging bottoms and carrying a large rucksack.

If you are out walking and see this person or have any information to assist police enquiries, please call 0845 164 1644, quoting Incident number: 746 of 8/10/08.

Thank you.

Do you know about pdf.s?

Some of the information you can access via PARWICH.ORG is in pdf format (e.g. the School Newsletters and Memorial Hall Management Committee minutes).  This format was designed so that people can access documents in exactly the layout they were written, unaltered by the various web browsers.  Also it is a quick and easy way to convert documents for the Internet and means they can be printed out readily in the layout intended.

However, to read pdf.s you need the appropriate reader software.  Most new computers now come with Adobe Reader already loaded, otherwise it can be downloaded for free by clicking on the icon below.  If you have Adobe Reader, but are having problems with some pdf files, check you have the latest version.  They are currently on Version 9, and you can update older versions by clicking on:

Derbyshire Dales Taxi Study

Parwich Parish Council want to know our opinions on the level of demand for taxis (Hackney Carriage and Private Hire) within our area. Derbyshire Dales District Council are assessing this issue:

The District of Derbyshire Dales is largely rural and with that comes particular issues of demand for taxis. Generally, towns with a population of 10,000 or more might support a Hackney Carriage rank but the bulk of demand will tend to be in response to phone calls and principally met by Private Hire Vehicles.

We are seeking to contact each Parish Council within the District in order to gauge the level of demand and quality of taxi service they are experiencing. Also, this is an opportunity for each area to voice its opinion and experience of taxis within the District.

In order that our experiences and views can be included in Parwich Parish Council’s response, please leave a comment below or email them directly on ppccl@fsmail.net by 25/10/08.

The future of local NHS provision

Our local PCT (Derbyshire County NHS Primary Health Care Trust) are holding an open event to give out information and find out about what people want in relation to NHS Dentistry provision and the planned new Ashbourne health complex including the new hospital that will replace St. Oswald’s:

1pm to 4pm Saturday 11th October
Ashbourne Leisure Centre, Clifton Road

The event will give people an opportunity to find out more about the new facility and to ask any questions they have about the project to GP staff and key members of the project planning team (including managers of Derbyshire County Primary Care Trust (PCT), who have commissioned the services, and Southern Derbyshire Local Improvement Finance Trust Company (LIFT), a public private partnership, who are responsible for the design, planning, development and maintenance of the new building for the PCT).

The event is open to anyone interested in coming along. People will specifically be able to: Continue Reading »

Suspicious circumstances?

On Monday night a car was parked on one of our lanes. Some one stopped to ask if everything was OK; the man in the car said he had just pulled over to make a phone call. However the man appeared awkward, even shifty.

This is very probably nothing, but if you are concerned by any incidents make a note of the details and any car registration number.  It is OK to ring the Police on 0845 123 33 33, or Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111. The Police are happy to get information that leads nowhere if it also means the occasional phone call that leads to something.

This week’s Stunner

  • p.13 The restoration of Bradbourne Mill has won the Master Builder 2008 award for best Large Restoration Project in Yorkshire and Trent.
  • p.41 Bob Matthews Quiz tomorrow at 8pm in the Sycamore Inn.
  • p.60 Ashbourne Town Darts results and standing in the leagues so far.

Thank you to Sue Adam of the Peak Park for letting us know that the draft Parwich Conservation Area Appraisal is to be submitted to the Peak District National Park Authority’s Planning Committee for approval on Friday 17th October.

The final draft is not yet available on the Peak Park Website but it should be on-line by the end of this week with the Agenda & Reports for this meeting.  Presumably it will be much as previously circulated with the amendments outlined in our earlier post of 8th August.

Do add your thoughts and comments below.  Once the Committee adopt it, it will be taken into account for future planning recommendations and policy decisions.  Members of the public may arrange to speak to the Committee by contacting Democratic Services by telephone on 01629 816362 or 01629 816382 or email democraticservices@peakdistrict.gov.uk by midday on Wednesday 15th October.

If you want the Parwich Village Action Group to speak at the meeting leave a comment below or contact Peter T on tel. 287.  The village’s biggest concern so far has been that the Officers strongly oppose extending the Area to include all the village.

More democracy in the Peak Park?

Last Friday the Peak District National Park Authority debated the Government initiated consultation on whether there should be direct elections to National Park Boards. They came to the conclusion that given the majority of members come from elected bodies there is no need for any change, however they are keen to encourage local debate on these issues.

Although local people are much better represented since the creation of the 6 Parish Council Representatives, still less than half the members of the Peak Park Board live in the Park. Also although over 70% of them do come from some 18 different democratically elected councils (though with parish councils often not enough people stand for elections to be held), they are not elected by their constituents as Peak Park Board Members.

At present we have a complex hierarchy of local government, and would yet more elections just further confuse the web of Parish, District and County Councils and the National Park Authority?

However, can any of the 18 councils represented on the Peak Park Board individually have sufficient influence to make real use of their currently indirect democratic pressure. As one person said, in relation to the Board’s preference for the status quo, “would turkeys vote for Christmas“? What are your views? Continue Reading »
