There was an excellent turn out for the Treasure Hunt. Unfortunately my mind is still reeling from ‘what colour is the cliffhanger in Creamery Lane’, ‘registrations over bubbles and shells’ and ‘ABs on level playing fields‘. I managed one very tasty burger before retreating to recover, so I missed the results.
It was a great evening. Well done Pippa and Alan for pitching the clues to give all a challenge, but at least ensuring the less observant amongst us (i.e. me) but not fall flat on our faces. The Legion was packed but the queue for the bar-b-q was certainly the most worthwhile challenge of the evening, next to the queue for the bar that is.
Alan if you don’t mind giving away your trade secrets, we could put the Village Treasure hunt on the Blog. (If anyone, whose brain survived the evening intact, wants to add to this post either add your comments below or email them to parwich@hotmail.co.uk)

Many thanks to Nia for the following (I can only second her thanks to the Wakes organisers, who are putting so much work into the smooth running of the Week. Each year I enjoy Wakes more than the last, how do they do it?):
Finally the weather was on the side of the children as they all gathered on a beautifully prepared race track (well it had been until Sunday evening and then the moles got to work… ). The crowd were in fine vocal form and the children put in final practise sessions and honed their techniques for the wheel barrow and 3 legged races.
As in previous years it was always going to be difficult to spot the winners without TV aided photo finishes, so there were numerous spotters on the final tape to ensure that the first 3 over the line received the all important brown envelope and that everyone else was placated with a sweet. Many of the children had been told that if they wanted to go on the fair they needed to win money to pay for it so there was a lot at stake as the children lined up and waited for Dennis to utter the `GO` word. PARWICH.ORG received its first input as a member of the Ringmaster Scheme today:
Warning over online cashback banking scam – 23 June 2008
Trading standards are warning people of a new online banking scam telling them they are due a cash refund. The emails claim to be from a leading high street bank and ask people to follow a link in order to claim money. Derbyshire County Council’s trading standards team are warning people not to respond to any unsolicited emails.
An example of the latest scam email reads:”Your debit/cash card might receive a refund worth £289.40 as a result of points accumulated through online payments. “Please submit the reward request immediately and allow us 2 – 3 business days in order to process it and the money clear into your account.” Another email scam requests that people carry out “customer data verification” and asks them to login via a link on the page. By clicking on the link your computer may be vulnerable to attack from viruses or spyware. Continue Reading »

For those who missed out, here are a just a few photos of yesterday’s fun and games with the campers. The event was well attended, had a friendly and fun atmosphere and was well organised. Despite the rain towards the end, everyone looked like they were having a great time.
Parwich were victorious in the tug of war (2-1 to Parwich), and unless I’ve been misinformed the Parwich team was the overall winner…

Following a short sharp shower the weather held dry for the Campsite Service. Thank you to all the Notts Caravan Club who put in the work setting up, providing the music and especially drying all the chairs. The congregation of campers and Parwich folk was swelled by those coming for Amy Isabel’s christening later. The Vicar led a rousing service with some joyful singing. It was great to celebrate the feast of St Peter and St Paul in the outdoors, and a stimulating reminder that celebrating this feast day is the origin of our Wakes and has been taking place here for perhaps a thousand years. We saw a record number of hits yesterday at PARWICH.ORG, with 902 page/post views, about 250 more than our previous best day! In part this is because of Wakes Week, and the fact that we have been able to get some things posted on the same day. Thank you to the Blog team and to everyone who has commented and sent in posts. Keep them coming.
We now have had over 42,000 hits in total since our official lauch on 16th March of this year. Also we have seen some 462 post and 697 comments. Keep them coming. Our remarkable success is a tribute to the whole community.
The next target is to top 1,000 hits in one day, but we can’t do it without you.

Sitting down to write this post, I am a little overwhelmed by the task in hand (or is that the hangover?), since this is really the subject of books, or at least several posts setting the scene, positioning today’s events in the context of 172 years of history of the Laurel and Crown Lodge of The Oddfellows Society. However, this has been covered much more ably and eloquently by others in the past (for instance the excellent paper in issue 4 of The Parwich and District History Society No. 4(January 2001) by Brian Foden. So I will confine my post to a walker’s description of the day, rather than try to explain the why’s and wherefores of the Oddfellows movement, and the origin’s and symbolism of the Oddfellows Anniversary Walk.
Due to Carolyn’s temporary incapacity, my wife Amanda gamely volunteered to provide a couple of fellow brothers with “the full monty” (that’s the breakfast – not the floor show!) in order to ensure we were well positioned nutritionally to enjoy the day. A dry warm day beckoned, in contrast to last years rather damp affair which ensured the walk this year was very well attended. All gathered at the Sycamore from 9am onward to toast the start, and at 9:45 having “sung” the opening ode, we were off, the linking of hands, a public display of the mutually supportive aims of the society. The Burbage Band led the procession, adding a wonderful sound track to the colorful occasion. Continue Reading »

Tomorrow night (Saturday) at 6.15pm Holby City will come face to face with Casulty on the Weakest Link. 
We will see our local favourite star, Dr Sam Strachan (aka Tom Chamber) pitting his wits against Anne Robinson who in her normal style will take great pleasure in attempting to tear her contestants to shreds. Other stars appearing from Holby City include Linden, Maddy, Mark (Robert Powell) and Maria.
Although this clashes with the Wakes Carnival, there is no need to miss out, just set your videos for 6.15pm. Hopefully we will also be able to see it on our computers on BBCiplayer. We’ll keep you posted on this one.

Carolyn has been back home for two weeks now and she is very pleased to be back in the village and back at home. Carolyn and Howard have spent the time taking trips around the village and the local area, catching up with friends and family and continuing Carolyn’s therapy.
Many of you will have seen Carolyn out and about around the village and will be reassured as to how well she looks – some people have commented that she actually looks better than before! Over the next while you will have the chance to see first hand how her determination and efforts are resulting in continual and noticeable improvements – at this rate she’ll be in next year’s hill race!

Get into the Wakes spirit a day early by coming along to Wesseldine’s Fun Fair on Parwich Green tonight, Friday 27th June. They plan to get going around when the pub opens, or a bit after (aprox 7pm -ish).

This is a two in one meeting. Firstly, it is your chance to share your concerns with Derbyshire Police & work together to resolve any problems. The aim is to try and do this by having Community Forums, one on each Beat. This is a further opportunity to influence how your area is policed.
Secondly there will be a presentation by The Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership about their role and responsibilities, which includes Safety Camera operations (Speed and Traffic light cameras).
The Tissington Safer Neighbourhood Team is only named like this because Tissington is in the centre of our area, which includes Mappleton, Thorpe, Fenny Bentley, Parwich, Bradbourne, Ballidon, Kniveton, Alsop en le Dale, and Pikehall. For this first Community Forum the venue will be at Tissington Village Hall because of it’s central location.

We are incredibly fortunate in our community that we have a low level of crime & we want to keep it this way. We are working closely with PC Ian Cooper to ensure that our villages are kept up to date with all appropriate information and have created some static pages where you can access his contact details, past newsletters and other relevant information. Click on the Useful Info tab at the top of the page and the find you will find the Police section under the directory category.
We are part of the Ringmaster network (see below) and will post any messages that come in to us.
Ringmaster Messages
This is a way in which Derbyshire Police gets information out into the Community, (you can receive this information by phone, fax or email), it will inform us about suspicious incidents, descriptions of vehicles & people & can also be used for non crime incidents, such as a missing person. If you would like to be part of the Ringmaster Message system please click here for the form.
If you are already part of Ringmaster and have not already filled in a form this year, could you do so, so that the Police records are up to date.
Key Individual Networks – (KIN)
This is basically a database of individuals who can be helpful to PC Cooper, but County needs to formalise it slightly, hence a small amount of form filling. PC Cooper already has a range of contacts from Parish Councillors, Publicans, event organisers & just people he can call on for a cup of tea, but he would like more contacts. In our area he is not anticipating having any meetings unless there is a need, but as a member of KIN, we may be asked to occasionally feedback comments to the authority. If you would like to be a KIN please contact PC Ian Cooper.

Some of you will have seen the article in the Ashbourne Telegraph on Councillor Ray Caswell’s resignation as Town Councillor for Ashbourne, on health grounds. We are pleased that he continues as County Councillor for the Dovedale Ward which includes Eton & Alsop and Parwich, and send him our good wishes. His group leader Councillor Andrew Lewer contacted us today to say that, while Councillor Caswell is unwell, constituents can contact him on any County Council issues.

The replica tympanum arrived at Parwich Church today and was fitted to the wall inside the tower. The original carved stone is deteriorating significantly, but English Heritage felt the risk of moving it was too great. In order to create a permanent record before the carving disappeared completely this replica was made.
