Derbyshire Dales have updated their Christmas tree recycling information:

image

Simply place your real tree at the edge of your property on your green/recycling day collection (between 5 – 29 January). Trees should be no longer than 5 feet in length so it may be necessary to break/saw the tree into a manageable size. Please remove the decorations and plant pot.

You can also take it to your nearest household waste recycling centre. It will then be composted along with other garden materials.

Use the easy postcode search to check which containers to put out and also to download your 2016 collection calendar >> www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/mycollection

* Check out more Christmas recycling tips at www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/christmasrecycle

So this means we can put out our Christmas trees on the next green garden waste bin days, which here in Parwich are Wednesday 13th and Wednesday 27th of January.

Brook Level Rising

The brook at Nethergreen is just about at the top of the bank and the water is roaring down.  If you are near the brook at any point through the village it is worth checking that no debris is being brought down with the force of the water. Apparently the banks have burst in Pits Lane.

Fracking In National Parks

Previous Blog comments indicate this is an issue of interest to our readers. Last Thursday the Government reversed their previous assurances and gave the go ahead in principal for the extraction of shale gas by ‘fracking’ (the injection of water and chemicals into shale beds to release the gas) within National Parks. It is not known if any companies will be interested in exploring for shale gas in the Peak District or in our immediate area, though there are shale beds under much of the local parishes.

There is now a Parliamentary petition asking the government to reverse this decision. Click on the image below to access this petition:

The recent poll here at parwich.org indicates some 75% are in favour of the principle of 20mph speed limits in residential areas, with the following thinking it would be a good idea for our local villages:

  • Alsop en le Dale 76%
  • Ballidon 71%
  • Parwich 74%
  • Pikehall 70%

These are the results so far (recorded at 4pm Sunday 27th Sept).

We encourage people to respond directly to the Council (click here to see their consultation on line), but there is still time to also add your thoughts to the following polls or comment below. Our poll results up to midday Wednesday 30th September will be sent to the County Council that afternoon.

Do you think 20mph speed limits are a good idea in some residential areas?

Lunar Eclipse Tonight

It is another of those events with a funny name tonight, there will be a ‘Blood Moon’ and a ‘Super Moon’.

A ‘Blood Moon‘ is a total lunar eclipse, that is when the Earth blocks the sun’s light from the moon. This results in a reduction in light reaching the moon, making it go dim, but also the light that does reach the moon is filtered by the Earth’s atmosphere making it look red. The BBC website (click here for more information) says:
image

The eclipse will start at 01:11 BST, when the Moon enters the lightest part of the Earth’s shadow, known as the penumbra, and adopts a yellowish colour. At 03:11 BST, the Moon completely enters the umbra – the inner dark corpus of our planet’s shadow.

The point of greatest eclipse occurs at 03:47 BST, when the Moon is closest to the centre of the umbra. The sky show is over by 05:22 in the morning on Monday.

This particular lunar eclipse, the second this year, also coincides with a full moon, when the Moon’s orbit brings it closest to the Earth, making it larger in the sky, i.e. a ‘Super Moon‘.

Derbyshire County Council’s consultation on the idea of 20mph speed limits in some (as yet unspecified) residential areas in the County ends next Wednesday (30th September). Click here if you want to find out more about the consultation or participate on line.

The Council plan to enter into further consultation with any neighbourhoods if they consider introducing specific schemes. However this is something that has been raised a number of times in the past both with Parwich Parish Council and here at Parwich.org, so what do you think?

We encourage you to respond directly to DCC’s consultation, but we will also forward any comments added to this post and responses to the polls below to the Council next Wednesday.

Do you think 20mph speed limits are a good idea in some residential areas?

Do you think a 20mph speed limit would be a good idea in our local villages?

Well Done Churchyard Team

I would just like  to say one or two thank yous to some of the few who gave of their time to sort out the piece of ground in the Church yard . These people who worked so hard to shift 20 tons of limestone rock that were hidden in all that piece of overgrown land. Who dug out by hand yards and yards of weed root, who dug and raked the land until it was fit for re-seeding. Stuart C. / Mick E /Howard M and Ian B .  Mick was kind enough to bring his digger down on site, Phil Kirkham was also kind enough to make available his dumper and not forgetting Patti and Brian who loaned us their chain- harrow. Well done team on a cracking achievement.

DCC Flood Assistance

Helping residents to prepare for floods at any time of year

Floods don’t just happen in the winter and we are urging residents to be prepared at any time of year.

The county had summer floods in June 2007 and July 2012 which caused serious and costly damage to some properties. Derbyshire County Council is now supplying free packs of sandbags through many of their libraries in addition to other collection points.

Sandbags can offer some protection against flood water entering a property. If the water does get in they can be used for damage limitation by diverting water away from more vulnerable parts of the property. They need to be filled and ready for use rather than trying to fill them as any flood water rises.

DCC’s Cabinet Member for Health and Communities Councillor Dave Allen said:

“Floods can happen at any time of year and we want to help residents be prepared, particularly those who live in areas most at risk.

“Our emergency planning team will provide support as usual but the new system will allow householders to take steps themselves to protect their homes and help prevent flood damage.

“Having sandbag collection points in 15 of our libraries across the county means people will easily be able to get their own supplies.”

Residents can get a free pack of 10 empty sandbags and supporting information from the following libraries:

  • Alfreton
  • Ashbourne
  • Bakewell
  • Bolsover
  • Chapel-en-le-Frith
  • Clay Cross
  • Clowne
  • Dronfield
  • Eckington
  • Hayfield
  • New Mills
  • Ripley
  • Swadlincote
  • Whaley Bridge
  • Woodville.

Packs are limited to one per household but requests for further packs will be considered in appropriate cases. The supporting information included in each pack includes a public health flooding advice leaflet, advice on how best to lay the sandbags, where to get supplies of sand and what further support DCC can give.

Residents who are unable to get to a library collection point can request a pack.

Peak District woodlands to be sold

The Peak District National Park Authority is to sell a number of woodlands.

Six initial sites have been selected  –  Coronation Plantation, Nabb’s Quarry Wood, Newhaven Plantation, Shay Bends Wood, Slack Hall Wood and Wetton Wood.

Jane Chapman, assistant director at the Peak District National Park Authority, said: “Following a review of our properties, we have identified six woodlands to be sold now, with a similar number to follow later in the year.

“Having established or improved these woods – often by reclaiming former rubbish tips or quarry sites – then protected and maintained them over many years, we have fulfilled our primary objective as a national park. We now want to return these natural assets to the community, as we are reducing our liabilities at a time of budget reductions and would like to make the best possible use of the resources we have.

“The sales will allow us to focus on the protection, improvement and maintenance of our remaining woodlands.”

The Authority currently manages 120 woodlands, covering approximately 443 hectares of land. The portfolio has been acquired since the designation of the national park, with the aim of securing important landscape features, rescuing woodlands which were deemed to be under threat or in need of restoration. They were also acquired as part of major estates.

The first six woodlands to be sold are:

Coronation Plantation, Leadmill, nr Hathersage (1.14 hectares)
Bought in early 1970s by what was then the Peak Park Joint Planning Board to ‘maintain landscape stability’.

Nabb’s Quarry Wood, Wildboarclough area of SW Peaks ( 0.44ha)
Reclaimed from quarry land in early 1970s.

Newhaven Plantation, Newhaven on A515 (1.8ha)
Bought in 2005, partially felled and replanted.

Shay Bends Wood, on A623 Baslow to Calver road (0.8ha)
Woodland on banks of River Derwent.

Slack Hall Wood, nr Chapel-en-le-Frith on road to Winnats Pass (3.1ha)
Recent cutting completed at roadside site to pre-empt future traffic issues.

Wetton Wood, above village of Wetton, North Staffs (0.16ha)
Former rubbish tip, now walled and established broadleaf and conifer woodland.

The selling agents for the woodlands are Fisher German, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, tel 01530 412821.

Perseid Meteor Showers

Earth is currently passing through the debris of a comment. This happens at various times in the year, resulting in meteor showers or shooting stars. The August shower is called the Perseids, and is in my opinion the best as it is more likely to be warm enough to enjoy sitting out at night to watch them. They should be at their best over the next three or four nights.

Click here for more details and best times to look out for them.

Found- a plughole!

Could this be what Peter T was describing? The water (such as it is) disappears down this hole and can be heard gurgling underground. This was also the site where the digger broke the pipe in the brook last year. Although it was repaired could this be relevant to the water vanishing underground completely at this point or is it just a co-incidence? Fiona H

Apologies for the delay in posting these photos by David G submitted last Thursday, but we had to wait for approval from the MOD and NASA before posting:

NB: MOD (Master OddFellow Drinkers) and NASA (National Agency Supping Alcohol) are certain that this is an unidentified flying object. One in ten Californians have been abducted by aliens, what is more worrying: what it says about Calinornians or what it says about aliens? What are your thoughts on what was ET’s favourite event at this year’s Wakes?

Visitor Comments

A holiday cottage owner passed these visitor comments on to us:

Were it not for life’s constraints, we would move to Parwich like a shot. It is an idyllic village, lovely to look at, with friendly residents and abundant tranquillity. …… My favorite thing is opening the bathroom window wide to see ewes and lambs grazing right outside in the meadow. …………… We were made so welcome by the congregation of St. Peter’s Church, and we feel a part of the life in Parwich already (though at quite a distance). – visitors from Syracuse, NY.

Sssshhh Don’t let everyone know.
