Pillowcases / Fabric Needed

Hi all,

I’m using some of my time on furlough to make scrub bags for the Derby Royal, and others who need them. The idea is that at the end of their shift nurses, Dr’s etc put their scrubs straight into a washable bag and tie it up before taking it home and putting it straight into their washer, removing the need to touch contaminated clothes once home.

I’ve made my first batch but am now running short of fabric. Would anyone have any pillowcases, duvet covers or fabric they be happy to donate. Pillowcases would be ideal as they’re quick to convert, fabric would need to be a half meter minimum.

If anyone could help donate then please contact me via or 07712 481 197.

I’m happy to collect from wherever you’re located. Any help at all would be gratefully received.

Many thanks,

We’ve just received the following message from Saskia: I have a partly dis-assembled cardboard toy castle. Hobbycraft, 91x91x81 cm. Already skilfully (?!) coloured in by my grandkids, but has a bit of play-life left in it for bored little ones (4-5 yrs?). I’m happy to drop it off in/near the village.

Saskia on 440.

As people start to social distance and in, some cases completely isolate, I’ve put together a collection of books and DVDs which anyone is welcome to take. They are placed on a small bookcase outside my home, 8 Sycamore Cottages.
Whilst I am well and have been social distancing for over a week now, I have spritzed the items with alcohol spray just to make sure. Fellow villagers are also welcome to take, swap and leave their own books and DVDs.
My favourite genres are a bit dark so you’ll find mysteries and gothic horror mostly with a few biographies, memoirs, historical fiction and lighter topics. DVDs include musicals and Downton Abbey.
It would be nice if any has spare children’s books to leave them for other villagers who are homeschooling. A spritz of spray on all donations would also be appreciated but I’ll check throughout the weekend too as it’s meant to be bright and clear so I’ll keep it out until Sunday evening.
In a couple of weeks, I’ll repeat the exercise.
Stay well, stay strong and look after each other.

Free Heating Oil

Lesley B writes:

Would anyone like some free heating oil? I have sold my oil tank & guesstimate that there are around 10 gallons or so (roughly 45 litres) left in the bottom of the tank.

The buyer is collecting the tank at around 11am on Saturday morning, so it needs to be removed by then. You’ll need to bring an electric pump (I’ll supply the electricity) and some containers.

Hi there,

Is anyone travelling to Derby on Friday the 4th in the morning? Allie and I wondered if we could grab a lift to the train station – we need to be there around 9:30 am or so.

Second hand books offered

Debbie W writes:

I don’t know if anyone is having a fund raiser anytime soon which will include a second hand book stall?

If so, I’ve had a bit of a clear out and anyone is welcome to quite a few books I’ve cleared out (a mix of modern and classics), otherwise I’ll pop them down to a charity shop.

To help us through these difficult economic times, we have been wondering if we might be able to use the collective buying power of PARWICH.ORG to negotiate discounts on a range of products.

Starting the ball rolling in what we hope is a suitably festive fashion, we have negotiated a 20% discount for a special Christmas mixed case of fine wines from Averys Wine Merchants.

This case, which usually sells at £125, has been discounted to £99.50.  Designed as a sampler of the best value wines currently in the Averys range, it also contains some extra special bottles for Christmas.

Please click here for detailed tasting notes of all twelve wines in the mixed case, in printable PDF format.

To take advantage of this offer, simply contact James Cole at Averys, and quote “Parwich”.

James can be contacted by phone on direct line (01275 812 210) or by email at

Please click here to read what James has said about this offer.

For guaranteed delivery before Christmas, please place your orders by this Friday (December 16th). Note that you will still be able to place orders after this date, at the discounted rate.

Finally – if any of our readers know of other organisations who might be willing to offer discounts via PARWICH.ORG, please let us know!

Garden bench offered

Jill L writes:

Would anyone like a metal garden bench? It’s in the front garden of Wheatsheaf Cottage: cream, a bit battered, just in need of wire-brushing and re-painting.

Give me a ring on 353 if you would like it. I am swapping it for a smaller one, so I can open the kitchen window!

PARWICH.ORG has been contacted by Steve Garidis of the Electric Bicycle Network, which is part of a major initiative to create a network of electric bikes and charging points across the Peak Park, copying similar schemes in Switzerland and Germany etc. Steve says:

Have you seen cyclists whizzing past, seemingly unconcerned about hills and headwinds? If so, they are probably on one of the new electric bicycles available for hire from hotels, self catering cottages, campsite and cycle hire centres around the Peak District.

Part of the Electric Bicycle Network launched in the Peaks this Spring. This new technology means that pretty much anyone can get into the great outdoors on two wheels. Why not give it a try? Bikes are available to hire at Carsington Water and our own Rivendale Camping and Caravan Park in Alsop-en-le-Dale.”

To promote this new initiative, two electric bikes have been made available for free trial at Carsington Water, exclusively to PARWICH.ORG readers, in return for a review on this site. This offer is strictly on a first come, first served basis.

If you’d like to try one of these bikes out, and if you’re happy to write a review of your experience for PARWICH.ORG, then please e-mail the blog team and we’ll put you in touch.

Ideas anyone…?

We have received the following message from Sue H:

We know of a very nice Swiss girl who is hoping to spend 6 months in England from this July to improve her English. She is 20 and works as a secretary in the French speaking part (she also speaks German). Her English is not fluent enough for her to work as a secretary over here but she would prefer to find paid employment rather than have to pay for an expensive language school. We’re investigating possibilities such as language assistant in QEGS or waitressing. Does anyone have any ideas/openings, or does anyone need an au pair over the Summer? Please ring Sue H on 390334.
