Ben’s pile!

Ben would like to extend his thanks to all those who have shown concern over his pile. He is delighted to say that it has now gone but it’s disappearance has taken a couple of months and involved considerable effort and a certain amount of pain. He has coped well with the friendly “jibes”, but was disappointed that no-one took the bit between their teeth and got stuck in.

Some Parwich Brownsons

Thank you to Stuart G Flint for sending in the following information in response to the earlier Brownson family history posts:

I have been researching my family history for some years now among whom is a family of Brownson who married into my mother’s Walker family of Wirksworth ..but I could never find the link with Parwich until recently, when out of the blue I made contact with a person who is a Brownson himself and whose family corresponds with my own kin..

I have now a pedigree of sorts as follows:

The Brownsons came from Alsop en le Dale and Parwich and before that way back in the 1500s are reputed to be descendants of John Brownson (or as it was spelt Braunson) who was a Steward to Mary Queen of Scots when she was incarcerated in Tutbury Castle and South Wingfield by The Earl of Shrewsbury. Loose Women

Friday 12.30pm on ITV sees the Loose Women panel involved in various topical debates viewed from a female prospective.  One issue they will be discussing is “Strictly Come Dancing” and Tom Chambers will be appearing.  This is a good excuse to watch television during your lunch hour because judging by tomorrow’s forecast you won’t be enjoying a balmy September day.

2012 here we come!

Parwich was outstandingly represented in the Bradbourne Fell Race – a hard & wet 6 mile run, crossing the stream twice & up exceptionally muddy banks.  The nearest fells maybe a couple of hours drive away, but it “felt like fell running”.   Parwich runners included Paul & Alex D, Graham J & Nia L, George & Charlie S, Rannoch, Thayer, Bertie & Lexie L – 5 of the 6 members of the Linnell family ran this punishing course, with Ed as official photographer.

When asked, Graham said his tactics for the race were to focus on a nice woman’s backside & follow it – “I found a good one this year”.  His wife said “It’s never going to be mine!!”  Comments from the younger athletes ranged from “easy” to “very hard”.  However ‘son of’ says “Mine’s a Chicken Tikka Masala with Naan”.  Graham who failed in the challenge is buying alot of curries tonight.

The guts and determination by all the runners was inspiring (not quite enough to make me want to join in).  To see our younger runners, 4 of whom were between 7 & 11, having the attitude ‘I’ll give it a go, I will do this’ should bode well for 2012, let’s hope it becomes infectious.

For more photos & Graham’s reaction to the realisation that the curry is on him ….. (more…)

Tomorrow at the Methodist Service held in Parwich Church at 2.30pm sees the dedication of the lectern in memory of Minnie Smith and the glass cross in memory of John Lees. Everyone is welcome to the service.

Minnie Smith by her daughter Jan Smith.
We are dedicating a new lectern in memory of my Mum, Minnie Smith. Minnie was born in a cottage on Alsop Road in 1912 and spent her early years in the village, attending the Methodist chapel and the local school. She often used to talk to me about the headmaster, Booth Hampson, who she always had a great deal of respect for. I gather that she wasn’t always a model pupil, as Mr Hampson was known to throw his keys across the desk to attract her attention during lessons.

Mum left Parwich to work first at Bradbourne Hall and later for Dr Madge in Ashbourne, before marrying Jim Smith in 1941. They spent 55 happy years together before my Dad died in 1996. My Mum always retained her deep affection for Parwich and I was brought to the village from a very early age. I am told I learned to walk at Flatts Stiles, then the home of Mum’s cousin, Mrs Mabson, on my first birthday. I know that Mum always felt that she was coming home when she came to Parwich and until her death in 2000 regularly attended the chapel services. I know that she would have been thrilled that our friend Colin has made this beautiful lectern in her memory.

John Lees by his daughter Janice Wigley.
Myself, and indeed all the family, especially my Mum, Peggy Lees are delighted that the cross in the Lady Chapel at Parwich Church is to be dedicated to Dad, John Lees. Dad was born in Ballidon in 1919 and ’emigrated’ to Parwich when he married Mum, he attended Parwich Chapel from then on. He loved chapel and I also have happy memories from childhood of new dress & gloves for Easter Sunday & Anniversary Services when the chapel would be full to bursting- even the balcony!

Thank goodness the ‘Chapel’ remains here and thanks, good luck & best wishes to all who have helped to achieve this.

The Autumn Flame Candle Company, based in Parwich, is to be re-launched.

Tracy Marshall first set up the Company, making and selling candles from her own home between four and five years ago. “I was always interested in art and crafts and wanting to make my own things. I was interested in making cards and got a craft magazine. I saw a candle making kit at the back and ordered it. I was hooked. I started buying more and more moulds, different waxes and colours, just doing my own thing.”

The idea was to create a home business that could start small alongside having a family, but that had the potential to grow. However, when Tracy was pregnant with her son, now aged two, she had some health difficulties and the wax smells from the candle making process made her feel sick. The new company had to be put on hold.  (more…)

Thank you to Parwich & District Horticultural Society for the following:

This year we revived our Hanging Basket Competition, which fell into abeyance some years ago. This was prompted by the donation of a Trophy to the Society in memory of the late Abel Shipley. Abel was born in 1915 at Warslow, but his family moved to The Croft in Parwich when he was three months old. He lived in Parwich the rest of his life, and retained an impressive memory of village affairs right up to his death. Many will have very fond memories of Abel.

As a child Abel worked on the family allotment behind their house, now gone unfortunately, and “every fortnight my mother walked me, aged 5, over to Warslow to clean and wash for my grandfather and uncle and then walk back again. This took us through Alsop, Gypsy Bank and Beresford Dale. (more…)

Alice Beasley’s Dressage Success

Alice’s recent double victory at Sheepgate Equestrian, Linclonshire (26th to 28th June) is reported in today’s edition of Horse & Hound.  Thank you to Patti (the justifiably proud mother) for the following:

Alice has now qualified Raffels (Freddie) for the Regional Dressage Championships at both Prix St George and Intermediare 1.  She recently also took out her new young 6 year old horse V.I.P. (known as Zippy for the fast rate of knots he goes around the field at play) and he won both his competitions.  Next week she is heading to Hartpury (Gloucestershire) to compete in a Premier League.

Congratulations Alice, it is fantastic to see you are now fully back to competition fitness, and all the best for the Hartpury Festival of Dressage.

Parwich’s multi-talented sports leviathon Roberto Buntingo has allegedly been spotted in another prestige sporting event. Buntingo employed perfect tactics. He chose to stick with the pack for most of the race – eating his packup and whistling Whitesnake tunes as he went. Many could not believe how effortlessly he climbed the mountains of the notorious Mont Blanc stage. One unkind journalist said he thought he could see Roberto’s braces hooked onto one of the upfront racers, but we know it was his indomitable spirit and unparalleled toughness.

Then it happened. An early breakaway at Cromford saw the Pike Hall pedallist beat eight riders up the gruelling hill. Deadly rival Collinio Simmsio almost caught him at the Carsington chicane but in the end Roberto powered through to claim the coveted yellow jersey.

Who knows what sporting achievement RB will attempt next???

Parwich’s Strongest Men!

Fortunately the rain held off for last night’s strongest man competition, which was particularly well attended. This year’s events were different to those from last year; they were definitely not for the fainthearted and included:

  • Farmers walk.
  • Car lift.
  • Hold tight.
  • Rotate on this.
  • Log pull.

The competition was sponsored by Marshall Builders and local plumber Rob Keeling. The events ran smoothly, if not effortlessly on the part of the competitors! Many thanks to Shaun Marshall, Paul Cooper and Rob Keeling, who had clearly put a lot of thought and effort in to the preparation and organisation of the event.

There were nine entrants, many new to the competition, spanning a range of ages and professions. Despite these differences, the thing they all had in common was that they were all ready and willing to take up the five challenges. This year’s competitors (in no particular order) are listed below, along with a group photo taken before the action began:

  • James Staley
  • Carl Alsop
  • Peter Carrington (Posh Pete)
  • Tim Ryder
  • John Etches
  • Robert Bunting
  • Rob Staley
  • Rob Spencer
  • John Hotchin (Hotch)

For those of you who’ve not caught up with her yet, here’s a photo of Carolyn from the other weekend – many thanks to Matt, Gill and Issy for sending in the picture and apologies for taking so long to post it…
