We have just received the following from Derbyshire County Council:

21st January collection update
Because of the overnight snow, today’s scheduled waste and recycling collections are on hold. We’ll be inspecting the roads later to check if it’s safe to collect. In the meantime please leave out bins and bags.

Please note it’s not just the condition of the roads on today’s scheduled rounds that are a concern, but also roads to and from our depot at Longcliffe.

Many thanks

Marion & John on the Move

We would just like to let everyone know that John and I exchanged contracts on Tuesday, with Robert Roebuck and Angela Dunlop, who are now the new owners of Orchard Farm! They are very excited about coming to live in Parwich.

They move in on Thursday 15th and we know everyone will make them feel very welcome. We are so pleased that they are very keen to take on Tom’s and Douglas’s Barns. We have loved our 30+ years at Orchard Farm, and 15+ years of running the holiday cottages; we shall miss both a very great deal but are very happy the way things have turned out and warmly welcome Angela and Robert.

Happily we are staying in Parwich, renting Hallgates for the time being while we look for somewhere to buy, hopefully in the village. We are now in complete chaos in two houses at the moment, and thank you so much to all the kind souls who have popped in to offer practical help and comfort! It is much appreciated.

The final move is on Tuesday, possibly running over onto Wednesday when we will finally close the door on that part of our lives…

(You may be relieved to know that birds are already coming to the feeders John has put up at Hallgates!)

Santa Spotting

It’s looking promising for clear(ish) skies on Christmas Eve for a bit of Santa spotting but if not, there’s a very good chance of seeing him going back home at 4.31pm on Christmas Day in the south west.

Also the good folk of the White Peak might catch a glimpse of him today as he pays Parwich British Legion a flying visit between 1 and 2.30pm.

Below are a few photos from a lovely night singing carols on the Village Green with Ashbourne Town Band. Even a bit of rain couldn’t dampen the festive spirit, all helped by the mulled wine and mince pies.

Message from Barbara McCormick

To everyone in Parwich, I would like to say a very sincere thank you for all your kindness in sending cards, messages, donations and loving thoughts to me and the girls following Brian’s death.

We have been overwhelmed by it all. It still seems very unreal and I miss him so much. Although hard, it has been so lovely to read words describing what he meant to people and how they remembered him. We have so many great friends and memories from our time in Parwich, and he treasured all those.

Also a special thanks to everyone who came up to Cumbria to be with us and give us support. He would have been very proud and honoured.

I don’t know how I will get over this ache and it will take a long time but I will try to be positive like he was.  Thank you again.

Love Barbara and family

Artists to Africa

Artists to Africa

The arrivals and departures of summer migrants, such as Swallow, House Martin and Cuckoo, hint at the changing seasons and deliver a sense of connection with distant lands. In January 2014, a team of four SWLA artists accompanied the British Trust of Ornithology’s Head of International Research on a trip to Senegal. By bringing artists and scientists together we set out to raise the profile around some of the issues facing our African migrants.

Esther will be showing some of her Senegal fieldwork in the Memorial Hall on the 22nd and 23rd of November 10am – 4pm along with some local work.
