In memory of the chestnuts

The avenue of horse-chestnut trees at Nethergreen was planted to celebrate the coronation of the Queen nearly 60 years ago.  For some fifty years they flourished, supplying several generations with conkers.  A number of years ago they were discovered to have a disease, that could not be treated.

Professional advice was for the disease run its course, cutting down the worst effected trees as necessary.  Unfortunately some more had to go today:

The disease is spread in the ground water so any replacement chestnuts would succumb.  However here is a reminder of the same view a year ago:

Photos by JF-S (At least the very old chestnut tree in the Churchyard is up steam, and a ‘left over’ tree from the avenue is still going strong in Hallcliffe garden, where it was planted by Mrs Dodds.)

Our thanks go to Dave R, who has submitted a very interesting comment on today’s post entitled ‘Wet start to October‘. Dave has sent us a couple of graphs by email that illustrate his point. We have therefore created this post so they can be shown…..

I note with interest the Parwich rainfall statistics. This current fall of heavy rain brings back unpleasant memories!

To my way of thinking, the 2008 flooding was a consequence of the ground being soaked during the previous week to the flood and then a downpour with nowhere to go. Looking back, the 2008 rainfall data shows a wet week followed by heavy rain on Friday (32mm) and heavy rain Saturday (40mm). The floods occured early Saturday morning so I guess that most of the Saturday’s 40mm were in the early hours and thus very intense. The cumulative rainfall for that week tots up to 97mm.
I’ve totted up the rainfall for this week and got 43.9mm and thus told myself not to panic.
Is it possible for ‘The Weatherman’ to keep a rolling weekly total of rainfall and then notify us all when it reaches say 50mm? Thus we could prepare our lifeboats in case the next day yields a damaging 40mm rainfall.
Does anyone else have any thoughts on the subject? I’m sure I’m not the only home owner with one eye on the clouds!
Dave”

Some more on road safety

Road safety is an issue raised by our readers at regular intervals, as illustrated by the post last Saturday, which has attracted a lot of interest and comments sharing the author’s concerns.  Here are a couple of earlier posts on the same topic:

It is great to see the increases in children playing out and in cycle use, and a majority (73%) of parwich.org readers support the idea of a 20mph speed limit in the village.

The Village Action Group raised the idea of the Parwich roads as a shared space (pedestrians having priority) including a 20mph speed limit with the Peak Park who are supportive of the idea.  (These ideas grew out of the traffic survey undertaken in preparation for the new Memorial Hall planning application.)

Parwich Parish Council regularly discuss roads and footpaths at their monthly meetings.  So look out for details of the next meeting.

Coincidently one of our readers has sent in these notes from a recent National Speed Awareness course: (more…)

Andrew Robinson 1937-2010

To all our friends in Parwich,

How can I find words to thank you for all the love and comfort that you have shown to Andrew during his illness, and now to me and my family as we face life without him.

Your wonderful cards, phone calls and offers of help brought Andrew much happiness and encouragement as I took them into hospital each day. He just loved Parwich, and all of you, and our years of retirement here were some of the happiest of our lives.

It was so comforting that he knew of the love that surrounded him. We just wish that he could have seen everyone at work in the Church getting ready for the funeral service. Thank you for all the beautiful flowers and foliage you brought from your gardens, and all the time and skill you gave so freely to make the Church look so beautiful. My family and I found it very moving to see you all at work and hear the shared memories of Andrew’s life here.

And now the healing goes on as I receive your loving messages of sympathy. Two passages in the Bible were very special to us – Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life; they who believe in me shall never die” and “Nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord”.

We have received the following message from Sue H:

I sit in our kitchen and listen to the whoosh of cars or the great clanking of tractors that are simply going too fast. (For the most part lorries and vans approach at a much more acceptable speed). I can’t say whether vehicles are actually breaking the speed limit but they are certainly driving too fast to be safely under control. I really fear for a serious accident at some point. There have already been 2 kittens killed on the road and I hate the thought that at some point it could well be a child. We have 9 youngsters along this stretch, some of whom are old enough to be road savvy but others who will just be starting to venture out on their own.

Perhaps drivers are not aware that they are already in the village when they come down from Townhead. Or perhaps they think that they have already left all civilisation once past the Hall on their way up through Parwich Dale. Nobody seems to take notice of the existing “school” sign. I seem to remember someone mentioning Brassington’s idea for slowing down traffic at entry points to the village: white road markings and white fencing to give the impression of the road narrowing. Is this something we should be considering? Or what about setting a 20 mph limit through the village? Maybe this would be the only way to make people more responsible in their driving.

What do you think….?

Parwich were represented by 4 runners in the Ashbourne half marathon and fun run.  Bertie L the 6th boy to finish the fun run, just ahead of Izzy P who was the third girl to finish.

In the half marathon Sue P was only a few minutes ahead of Graham J, he was running his first half marathon and has never run more than 10 miles.  Both runners finished in less that 1 hour 50 minutes, on what is considered a tough course, going up a number of hills near Thorpe and Blore before finishing back at the rugby ground.

Well done to everyone – a great morning.

Hayley Powell’s first piece of blacksmith art was creating the cuckoo for the field in Monsdale Lane, now better known as the Cuckoo Field. This piece of art was made when she was only 16, studying for her A Levels at QEGS. Hayley grew up in Parwich, she always loved walking around the countryside and could be seen regularly walking the family dog Axel: the Irish Wolfhound.

Not always happy with the conventional methods of learning, Hayley hunted out extra curriculum workshops and events including helping out at art workshops and then becoming heavily involved within an organisation that delivered courses on rural crafts to young people. These included dry stone walling, woodland management at Chatsworth, hedge laying and blacksmithing. Hayley was hooked.

Between studing for a Degree in Design Technology at Derby University she was able to gain work experience with blacksmith Charis Jones, who is still a massive inspiration to her. Once her degree was completed back in June, she decided to follow her heart and really make a difference to preserving the rural skill of blacksmithing.

Hayley, an Artist Blacksmith has called her new business Forever Forged .  She is committed to creating hand forged creative, yet functional items, for your home and garden. Inspired by tradition, forged with passion.

Hayley can be seen at the Wirksworth Art Trail this weekend, 10am-5pm. Her venue will showcase a wide range of fun and artistic pieces, filling the courtyard and garden of the Old Tinsmith.

Tickets for the Trail are £5 and free to under 16’s.  A fabulous opportunity to see more than 100 artists, including Lewis Noble, exhibiting their work in dozens of different venues throughout the town.  There will also be a Makers Market, stalls with food and street entertainment, including the fabulous A52s.

A selection of some of Hayley’s work, more can be seen on her website.

On Saturday (11th September) some members of the Hawley Society are visiting Parwich as an addition to their 2010 European Conference.  The American based Hawley Society are a single name family history society.  The main American Hawley line descends from Joseph Hawley (1603 to 1690), who was originally from Parwich but emigrated to Connecticut in the first half of the seventeen century.

The visit will include a guided tour of the village led by Parwich & District Local History Society and supper at the Sycamore Inn with an informal talk presented jointly by both Societies.  The Hawley Society members will then spend Sunday touring the Peak District and some other Derbyshire villages with Hawley links.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Hawley visit to Parwich and in coming along on Saturday contact Peter T c/o parwich@hotmail.co.uk

After taking a year’s break in 2009, Parwich’s annual horticultural show returned in fine style on Sunday, with another stunning display of local vegetables, fruits, flowers, pot plants, cakes, loafs, flans, biscuits, jams, chutneys, eggs and other assorted goodies.

Three excellent new categories were introduced this year, two of them (the trifles and the sculptures made from bar snacks) being specifically designed to showcase the skills of Parwich’s menfolk. There were also plenty of entries in the horticultural photography competition, which saw the memorial hall’s brand new display boards being put to use for the first time. Thanks are due to the organisers of the Parwich Panoramic Five, for raising most of the funding for these new boards.

Prize giving took place at 3pm, with Jo Larkin presenting the winners with their trophies. Full results will follow shortly. The day then concluded with the traditional auction of produce, as officiated by Robert Bunting.

Many thanks to the Horticultural Society, for organising such a well-run and popular event.

The Bell is Back

Our Church Bell was returned from the Loughborough Bell Foundry yesterday, newly restored with its bright red mountings (known as a headstock) and bright redclapper. The bell, which is older than the church, dating from 180was cast by a Chesterfield foundry and had not been serviced since the Church was built in the 1860’s. The bell’s condition meant that it could come crashing down at anytime, so this restoration was long overdue. You might have heard it on Friday afternoon; the sound is fuller and more resonant.

Come and hear Jonathan Marshall ring it out on Sunday at the Songs of Praise service at 10am- all welcome!

Many thanks to all of you who have supported our concerts and other fund-raising events, these have enabled us to fund the £4,000 restoration bill- and many thanks to Lynette Coyne and Don Lowndes jnr. who assisted with the fitting of the Bell.

Hiving a Swarm of Bees

This article has been sent in by Mike at Flaxdale Apiary who is supporting Derwent Rural Counselling – if you need help with a swarm ring Mike on 390433.

I am alerted now and again by residents of Parwich who have found a swarm of bees on their land – what should they do?  Several weeks ago in July I found such a swarm hanging from the branch of a damson tree in my croft.  The following describes what I did next:-

1. Obviously you wear protective clothing and use a smoker when you work on a swarm!  In fact this swarm was not aggressive or troublesome at all and I did not bother with a smoker; swarming bees are not normally aggressive because they are engorged with honey. I laid a white sheet on the ground below the swarm covering as wide an area as possible.

2. Using a skep (a woven straw basket shaped container used by beekeepers) or a cardboard box which is what I used, I placed the opened box immediately underneath the swarm with one hand and with the other I shook the branch onto which the swarm was attached and most of the clump of bees fell into the box.  You have to be quite skilful manipulating the box with one hand and shaking the tree branch with the other! This is even more difficult if you have to mount a ladder if the swarm is on an upper branch. A pair of secateurs is useful if you have to cut a stem off a branch.

3. Then I placed the box with the bees inside it on the white sheet on the ground with the opening to the box on its side just open enough for the bees to enter the box.  There were lots of other bees which had fallen on the white sheet and others flying around.  I used a feather  to sweep the other bees off the branch. You want all the bees to end up in the box! (more…)

Today the planting was completed (well almost) at the Memorial Hall.  There are 8 plants outstanding, which will be planted when the grass seeding is done in September.  All bar one of the beds has been muched and this final one will be covered over the weekend, once we have planted the hundreds of snowdrops that were donated by different people in the village.

It is super to see the final phase completed ready for the Official Opening on the 25th September, to which everyone is invited.  Again a huge thank you has to go to the Horticultural Society for their massive financial contribution towards the planting and to those individuals and groups that donated the 5 trees.

Earlier this year Ian Pitts, metal detecting in Hallcliffe garden, found a small gold signet ring.  With the date from the hallmarks I started ringing round the previous occupants of the house.

Today the ring was taken to Malcolm and Ruth in Alstonfield, who confirmed it had been made for Ruth by her parents out of gold from the wedding rings of both her grandmothers.  The ring was inscribed with Ruth’s initials, but these are very worn and only identifiable under a magnifying glass.  Their oldest son particularly remembers how distressed his mother was when the ring was lost.  Certainly she was pleased to get it back after some 25 to 30 years.

The Summer Music

Thank you to John F-S for these photos taken at last Saturday’s concert by the de Parys Trio (Eric Hill on guitar, Jill Hughes on flute and Martin Hughes on violin).

With a range of music, including Bach, Gluck, Paganini, Carulli, Rossini and others, there was something for everyone from classical through romantic to tango and jazz.  Though numbers were a little down on last year the evening could hardly have been better.  The only fly in the ointment was a potential clash with the musical neighbours, but they generously suspended activity ’til the concert was over.

What an excellent idea and a great evening.

Denis L showed a cine film from the 1960s of Wakes and a slide show of Wakes photos taken over the last 100 years or so on the Parwich Film digital projector now installed in the new Hall.  I did not count the audience but there must have been over 50 or 60 people there, sharing memories.  The loudest responses were to some of the 60s and 70s fashions and Carnival costumes (Val K is very keen to ‘have a strong word’ with whoever handed over to Denis one particular photo).

The Carnival & Recreation Committee had laid on wine and cake, which was avidly consumed as people looked at more photographs that people had brought in and displayed on tables arround the hall. (more…)
