Maths is Fun.

Today saw the culmination of Numeracy Week, and what a day it was today.  The children had the challenge of dressing up as something to do with maths.

The afternoon, with parents taking part, involved a maths relay with all the school involved.  With 7 teams of mixed ages, each team had to run to collect their first of 30 questions, as each one was answered, each child taking it in turns had to return to the the teachers to have their answers checked.  Once they received the OK, it was back to their group for the next one.

Parwich Open Gardens

The sun broke through the clouds and shone down on Parwich Open Gardens this year. Despite the closed road on the B5056,  several hundred people visited the gardens this Sunday, making the event a huge success. Thank you to everyone who entered the horticultural show and well done to those who won prizes!

Members of the Horticultural Society manned the plant sale which generated much interest amongst the visitors.

Cream teas were provided thanks to the hard work of the backroom staff and thanks to those who baked scones and helped prepare for the ‘hungry hoards’.

Special Sunny Saturday

What a beautiful day!

It was one of those days when the weather was so perfect that everything felt special.  The barbeques came out, people enjoyed their gardens and the pub beer garden was put to good use.

Morning interest was provided by the first Cycling Plus Sportive event which chose to come through Parwich as part of their 100 mile route. Starting from the Donnington area over 500 cyclists took part in the event. Looking at the event website, many participants found the Peak District section the most enjoyable.

The children went on a visit to Ashbourne Library for a special ‘Storytime’ after which the children enjoyed choosing books to take home. The squash and biscuits were popular too!  There is now a display of their work in the children’s section of the library.  Why not pop in and have a look.

Moonwalk completed

From Sandra and Rebecca:

We would like to thank everyone for their support for the Moonwalk which we completed this morning.

Before the start
Before the start

We set off from Hyde Park at midnight and strode out for the first 13 miles which took us past Buckingham Palace, Westminster along the Victoria Embankment and over London Bridge; coming back along the South Bank, Albert Embankment and Battersea Park; where there was a quick detour via the bushes!

Following yesterday’s rundown of the six road signs that most of you wanted to stay, here are the seventeen signs that most of you would like to get rid off.

One of the more interesting results is that 73% of you support a lowering of the speed limit to 20mph.

We’ll start with the least popular sign of all, and work our way down.

90% of you thought that the lower sign (right hand junction) should go.

Parwich Odd Fellows has commissioned its own specifically brewed ale. There are just four cases remaining, so if you want to try it you need to be quick!

Each case contains 12 bottles and costs £26; alternatively you can buy individual bottles at £2.50 a bottle.

In addition, there are just ten of the ‘special presentation packs’ still available – each pack contains 3 bottles, one of which is 1 of the first 24 bottles produced and has a special label to prove it! The presentation packs cost £11.

To purchase this unusual product, which is unique to Parwich Odd Fellows, please contact Bill Whitfield on 390571.

If you miss out, don’t despair – there will be a new but different brew produced for Parwich Odd Fellows for Parwich Wakes week!

A few weeks ago, parwich.org published some photographs of the glorious daffodils in Dorothy L’s woodland garden. Alas, the daffs have gone over now and the onerous task of dead-heading is well under way.

We have good news however. Dorothy’s woodland garden is looking more spectacular than ever. The bluebells are flowering and make a breathtaking scene. DSC_8658 - Phase One Capture 4 Adjusted_1195x800

Last Sunday, a small team of ‘professional’ Parwich cameramen were asked to make a video record of the St. George’s Day Parade. The exercise was meticulously planned and good vantage points were identified the day before. One of these points happened to be the bell tower of St. Peter’s Church, providing a rather interesting panorama of the village. In addition to the filming, our roving reporter took a few still pictures to share with you.

The Parwich Odd Fellows set in motion a very successful day. A big thank you to everyone, including the organisers, especially Mick Edge without whose vision, ideas and determination, the day would not have happened, all the helpers and those who came along and supported the day.

The morning’s march by the Odd Fellows and the Derbyshire Dales Cyberscouts, led by Doveholes Brass Band, followed the route of the Wakes March, though with fewer refreshment stops!!  The Cyberscouts (including beavers, cubs and scouts) were particularly smartly turned out for their first parade in Parwich. It was very well supported and by the time the Church was reached for 11am there were more people than pews.

Andrew took the service of celebration: rousing hymns with the organ and brass band, dedication of two new kneelers commemorating the British Legion and Norman Edge; and the dedication of the four new banners for the Cyberscouts. Andrew’s address drew on St. George, the Good Samaritan and Jesus as examples of the importance of service to our communities.

The march continued around the village, finishing at the Memorial Hall for lunch and the chance to enjoy some live music.

The celebrations continued into the afternoon with the Church Fete. The afternoon was interspersed with Winster Morris Dancers  and the well-known band  the A52s.

Sandra and Rebecca would like to thank everyone who very generously supported their coffee morning to raise money and sponsorship for taking part in the London Moonwalk. They collected a massive total of £440.30 in the morning in donations, sponsorship, cake stall and raffle.

All the proceeds are going to breast cancer projects supported by the Moonwalk. Together with sponsorship already collected they are getting dangerously close to reaching their target at which they promised to post a picture of them in their decorated bras in which they will walk a full marathon length circuit around the streets of London, starting at Midnight on May 16th.

Here is a picture of them taken just before they polished off all the left-over cakes and biscuits.

As you round the corner by the turn-off to the School, a rather special sight greets your eyes. Over the last few years, an area of ‘wilderness’ has been transformed into a calming, charming woodland garden. This transformation has been achieved thanks to an enormous amount of hard work by Dorothy L, who has realised her vision to establish meandering paths and wild flowers in a natural setting.

One of the joys of Spring is to see the daffodils bloom in this area. This year, they are magnificent. Here is Dorothy tending her garden:

A number of villagers have expressed concern over the state of the B5056 near the Bentley Brook.

Mike H says:

Does anybody else feel as concerned as I do at the rate at which the road is slipping at the temporary traffic lights by the Bentley Brook?

The road sinks further week by week and the fissure gets wider and wider. It seems to me that there is a serious risk that the road may be closed if a further substantial movement occurs. This would cause severe inconvenience to all Parwichians as well as those who use the B5056.

Leaving the road to deteriorate in my opinion is likely to cost the Council (us!) far more money and may cause serious disruption. A stitch in time……

The Parwich Memorial Hall funding group are currently preparing a grant application which, if successful, will make our new Hall entirely self-sufficient for all its energy needs – as well as generating extra electricity for the village.

Due to our location at the end of a valley, residents will be aware of how windy it can get – particularly on the top of Parwich Hill. Therefore, the plan is to capture this wind energy by installing a wind turbine on top of the hill.

Thanks to the latest technological advances, modern wind turbines are much less visually intrusive than they used to be – as you can see from our artist’s impression.

Bertie Linnell – the young blonde hooligan – has for the last year been the Captain of Ashbourne Rugby Club U9 team. Yesterday he lead them to the final of the NLD (Notts, Leics and Derbys – for the non sporting types….) competition. Unfortunately they were then defeated by West Bridgeford but Bert has consistently been man of the Match and we may have found an outlet for his energies!

bertie-11Ashbourne RUFC  says “The Under 9’s travelled to Newark to participate in the Notts, Lincs & Derbys Cup to take on the best teams from across the three counties. Most of the opposing teams are from much bigger and more established clubs, but Ashbourne displayed maximum quality, effort and determination to come away with a well-deserved runners up spot.

The defeat in the final cannot disguise what was a fantasic achievement by the team to be recognised as the second best Under 9’s team from across the three counties of Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire.

At Andrew Robinson’s request, John Fuller-Sessions has put together a splendid photographic catalogue of the stained glass windows inside St. Peter’s Church.

There are 41 images in total. Some are of the full windows, and some are detailed close-ups.

As the images look best in “full-screen” mode, we have loaded them into a slideshow on Flickr.

Please click here to view the slideshow – which will look even better if you press F11 on your keyboard before clicking the link. (When you’ve finished viewing, simply press F11 again.)

You can select individual images for viewing by clicking this link – or alternatively by starting here, and clicking each “next image” in sequence.

Lastly, all of these images have been archived on our ever-popular PHOTOS page – which is now once again up to date with all of our recent photography.

Pre School Event

On Monday morning the children of Stepping Stones Pre-School showed how much they appreciate us Mums (and Grandmas), by inviting us along and showcasing  their paintings of their Mums and telling us why they love us.

(My special talent apparently, is making dinner. Thank you Wyatt x)

Then as if that wasn’t enough, they treated us to refreshments: homemade fairy and butterfly cakes and orange juice, all aided by their very special supervisors, Penny and Felicity.

The whole event left all of the Mums feeling very special, and quite rightly so!!!

At the end of the day, just two votes separated our winner from our runner-up – but there can only be one winner, and we can now announce that the honour goes to…

(…long pause…)

(…drum roll…)

The Coach and Horses at Fenny Bentley.

The Coach and Horses, Fenny Bentley.

With its award-winning reputation for consistently tasty food (using locally sourced produce wherever possible), served cheerfully and efficiently in pleasant surroundings, the Coach and Horses has become a perennial favourite for Parwichians who fancy a change of scenery.

The pub also offers a warm welcome to non-dining drinkers, in the cosy main bar area. (We particularly like perching around the high, round table in the far right hand corner.) The Marstons beer is also extremely well-kept, making this pub a great “all-rounder” for drinkers and diners alike.

Congratulations to the Coach and Horses!

The Coach and Horses, Fenny Bentley.

And finally… no round-up of local country pubs would be complete without a reminder of everyone’s favourite public house of them all.    The Sycamore is a true village local, which really does go the extra mile to serve its community – as demonstrated at the Great British Pub Awards 2008, lest we forget – and we are very lucky to have it.

Honorary mentions also go to the Parwich Royal British Legion – not a “public house” as such, but another fine place in which to drink and socialise.

After all, you know what they say:
“East, West, home is best!”

Our runner-up position is hereby awarded to The Duke of York at Elton – an establishment which takes a very different approach to our third placed pub, offering a truly traditional Derbyshire drinking experience.

The Duke of York, Elton.

Here’s what some of our readers had to say about it:

Original village pub. No fancy frills and trappings and even has its own village idiot! Try a Sunday Lunch visit.

It is refreshing to go to a pub where you can just enjoy a quiet pint of cask ale, without being pushed from pillar to post by people serving pub grub. The Barley Mow (Kirk Ireton) is also what I would regard as a ‘traditional’ pub, but in my opinion is nudged into second by the friendly, warm atmosphere at The Duke of York.

Thanks to all who voted in our long-running “Parwich’s favourite country pub” survey. From an original list of fifty pubs – all within approximately 10 miles’ driving distance of Parwich – we can now announce the Top Three.

In third position, we have The George at Alstonefield.

The George at Alstonefield

Thanks to John F-S for sending us this report:

Fifty or so of Chris Harrison’s former parishioners boarded a Warrington’s coach on Sunday afternoon to attend ‘The licensing by the Lord Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham and Installation by the Archdeacon of Nottingham of the Reverend Christopher Harrison as Priest-in-Charge’.

The installation was an impressive service sustained by beautiful music and singing in one of Chris’s three new parish churches. Afterwards we were generously entertained to tea and cakes. We left feeling that Chris has a huge, exciting and demanding task ahead of him – we look forward to seeing him from time to time when he returns ‘home’ for a bit of refreshing country air.

Dear Parwich.org – please could you pop this note onto your great website!

I thought I would let you know that the National Park Ranger Service recently visited Parwich to clear new tree growth from footpath 1, the trackway that runs south of the village towards Sitterlow Farm.

Probably about 10 years ago now, my colleague, Neil Hanshaw, was involved in improving this path, by installing drainage and surfacing. Some of you probably remember wading down this lane in wellies, because it was more river than path at this time. Then about 4 years ago the Ranger Service returned to this path because it had become obstructed by overhanging trees and vegetation. Over the course of one winter we gradually removed the obstructing trees to let in light and room for people to pass unmolested by blackthorn and hawthorn. We probably spent about 60 person days working on this clearance job – it was a considerable task – but the odd baked potato in a fire helped to keep our spirits up. But it was with considerable depression that I received a report last summer that young hawthorn and blackthorn growth was gradually closing in on the path again.

So last week when snow threatened to cancel our pre-arranged work with our valiant band of conservation volunteers, we diverted ourselves to Parwich and snipped back all the new hawthorn and blackthorn growth before it became a mammoth task again. (more…)
